Downloaded & installed the patch. Checked my old game was still available, it was, great. Decided to start a 'Test' new game and was somewhat surprised to be offered the option to use my old customised database in the drop down box - as I was led to believe this would disappear with the new patch. Anyway, selected my old database and the new game started fine and used my old database. Have I picked up wrong info from the patch threads?

There is nothing strange about that. That's how it's "always" been. You can choose any available database you have for a new game. The patch has simply fixed the actual game. This update happened to also include the updated official database is all.
