I could never understand why it wasn't open sourced, that way a few of us could develop it - especially since the maintainer has admitted he has little time for it and is not making a profit (except for the ads inside maybe).

open source is not a practice generally followed by companies that seek to make a profit. just see the copyright laws used in the world today.

Aye? How about Google? Canonical? The whole Linux industry? You think they're not making profit just because they are not selling their software pre-compiled? Don't be so narrow minded.

I think opening the source for these kind of programs (like Scout, FMM) could be a great idea.

They weren't made to make money or to promote anything. They were made so people (including the author) could enjoy. If the author is releasing his software for free, he is probably only looking for the great feeling of contribution. And when that's the case, it's only another reason to open the source code to the public.

Even a compromise could be made and the software's main functions could be handed out pre-compiled (Dynamic Link Libraries, (.dll)).

I don't understand the complications with bringing out Scout to be honest!

FMM can pull the required info out, and could do it within a few days of release!

All we really want is the CA and PA, and maybe the attributes, to start, and then it can be developed further.

If there was a search ability in FMM then that'd do!

All I can think is that because so much extra stuff was included with Genie Scout, he's trying to get all that working before he releases it. When really we can live without it!!

it's possible Genie will charge for his scout. In one of latest scout he has asked a few question. As i remember, one of them were about price.

That's what I'm wondering as well, it was made into quite a slick program by the end of the 2007 versions! A long way from the original scout programs!

Because I'm sure if he wanted, he could release a basic Scout that could just pull the basic info!

What's the matter, everytime somebody questions why this is taking so long, somebody else jumps in there with some smart ar2e comment!

Obviously I won't be making my own version, but why should that stop me from wondering why it's taking so long, or adding my thoughts and opinions to a discussion forum!
