In FM07 after a fairly long career i found my scouting network not really performing how i expected. So after a few seasons i decided to give Genie ago which put back alot of joy into my game & gave me many more seasons of fun.
However, i didn't change any of the training outputs & my players never really improved to their full potential as Genie showed. Yes i know this is down to my training methods i guess but my question is...
Do players reach their actual potential as Genie implies...?
For example how many players would out of ten, given the best coaches, given games etc...
I can't say how many out of ten as they requires an AI experiment but it is just their potential, not all players will reach it but many will come close to it or move significantly from their CA to their PA.
A good example of players achieving or falling short of their potential ability is Kipfizh's What would happen if? thread which details 24 created players with massive potential. It also, in later seasons, looks at potential stars around the world and tracks their progress.
A cracking read which covers your question very well.
The problem with FM is that so many players do reach there potential. It isnt so evident with the original players because some of them are to old to reach that potential. Once a player is 25 or so you would be very lucky if they gained 5-10 points in CA by the time they are at 29 or 30 an then they go downhill (depending on position, some positions peak earlier). However with regens and young original players they almost always reach there potential. The most important thing isnt training, its playing matches. I have had a 17yo go up 40 points of CA through playing regularly and playing well and also very good training with 5 star coaches in FM07. This guy had a PA of 200 so the game also makes him develop faster so he can reach that PA. Also he had a high work rate and good mental traits. So this was an ideal development situation.
One last thing, you shouldn't pay to much attention to the potential attributes and potential positional ratings because that is just something made by the genie scout program that trys to predict what the player will be like when they hit there PA. The important thing is too just look at the PA.
Ahhh that makes sense. I remember getting a message about one of my youth academy players. I think it was the best to ever come through.
Anyway i was excited about getting him & gave him games in the FA & league cup while playing in the reserves he didn't seem to work out for me so i sold him to Real where he didn't seem to reach his potential even then but he was over 25 by that time.
I guess i should of thrown him into the first team as much as i should of.
Yeah you probably should have loaned him out. Even though the club he is at wont have as good training as you do, for a youngster that match experience is very important.

As said previously, determination and other mental attributes also determine whether he will ever reach his potential.
Kipfizh's experiment found that the two star potential players with low mental attributes and low determination, low workrates etc did not reach their potential whereas the 22 Bandits players did.
Well those 2 players were always going crazy and skipping training and ****ing of there managers so they played less. Also adds to why they didn't reach there PA.
So i take it when people who use Genie to assist themselves when investing/buying players they don't do it soley on what their full potential could be in the hope they'll reach a standard near that, they look at mental attributes too...?
I've only really just started using it, well in FM07 & want to get it right in FM08 when it is finished it's just i want to use Genie correctly to bring a good youth team through.
Normally i sign as many as i can as when they're young they cost nothing.
So do people use Genie in a certain way or do they do what i do & get as many as they can in the hope one or two will make it (which is what i guess real life is like in the academy of clubs).
