hey paul, i do believe it all depends on the team and the kind of players you have, im with middlesbrough at the mo and use a 4-5-1 formation and working wonders for me, very attacking formation aswell.

I'm managing Sunderland and have made only one loan signing with Michael Gray from Blackburn so the rest of the squad is as it is in real life i've tried the Diamond formation that doesn't work and the ROT solid tactic i got off the tactics forums.
I'm too finding it very difficult in terms of using a good tactic. I have been playing with Liverpool and can't win a game. I haven't signed many players due to limited funds. However, I have signed Eddie Johnson (St) and Ratinho (Rb). I have used many of the tactics that have been posted for the PC version but they don't seem to work. I would be greatful for any help.
The thing with using other peoples tactics is they are designed to work with a particular group of players.
I find it much better to create your own which may sound like alot of work, but it isn't really and much of it is common sense. Don't make your defenders all out attacking for example :-)
I always start with a 4-4-2 diamond using a loose RoT (ie I don't religiously stick to 2 notch differences, but stick to the general 'ethos' of RoT), and slowly tweak it until it's fairly solid. With spurs at end of October 2006 I'm 3rd in league & unbeaten in europe so a diamond can work if set up correctly.
I'd highly recommend looking in the Tactics forum and reading Cleon's Thread "The unofficial Tactics Bible". There is a wealth of information and debate there. Everything from Defensive Instructions to getting your strikers working together is covered, and then some!
Also, bear in mind that no tactic is going to bring you overnight success, and you need to change it slightly game to game depending on who you are playing. A good way to determine is to look at the pre match odds. I generally start with a slowish, short passing game,(8 tempo, 8 passing) then depending on how the game is going (always watch extended highlights) I'll adjust the team tempo, passing and mentality as needed.
In FM, there is no super tactic that will work instantly with any team, so just giving you my tactic would be futile.
Anyway, check out the thread in the Tactics forum and good luck. Stick with it because when you design your own successful tactic (albeit perhaps based on others' theories) it is incredibly satisfying.

Cheers mate i gave up with Sunderland and now have started in the conference south with Newport and i'm using a Diamond formation and it's working a treat currently 3rd my media prediction was 16th and i've only lost 2 games in about 15 matches so i'm well happy.
