First of all, I am a big fan of the game series, I've played the games since we were both young...
As a Norwich fan, no apologies or condolances accepted, I have stuck with them throughout all my life - and played with them as a manager. Now I realise that they're not the biggest club with the biggest reputation or the best squad - but at times it seems like the PL is hugely overestimated compared to the Championship teams. I've gone through a few seasons, upgraded my team heavily and look to get promoted this year. The problem is however, that each team that's relegated from the PL seem to bounce right back up because they've got superior ability compared to the rest of the division. They almost always have a set of strikers worth 4-5M who score a goal per game. Boy do I get annoyed when Leroy Lita plays against me, me MUST be the most overestimated player in the game. He's easily better than any other striker I've met in any game, save for a few freaks of nature in history.
I think the game overestimates the sheer skill of some of the players of the PL teams, while underestimating that it's a team sport, where intensity and willpower play a huge part. I rarely see the PL teams drop to lower league teams (at all) because they absolutely RUN them through with speed - I get my share of that when I am involved too
That, combined with the overestimation of value of the reserve-players of the big teams (United, Pool, Arsenal, etc.) who always seem to be worth more than most other first-teams in the league (exaggeration, but still). I understand that some of them are bound to become great, but there are too many 4M + players that never become anything - those values should be readjusted somewhat.
So, apart from my personal issues with the huge difference between PL and CC, what's your take? Who are the most overestimated players, teams or coaches around?
Every year the gap get bigger between the two divisions, but its the same clubs releagted each year and they are mostly championship players with a few ringers. And in real life the prem class players tend to move on when their club get relegated so perhaps a more realistic turn in FM would be to see the better players at releagted clubs moving on?
I agree that the turnover of the most skilled (and ambitious) players should be bigger from from the relegated teams. Right now I am experiencing that the relegated teams just blast through any opposition and bounce right back - mainly because they retain all the quality in the team, and seemingly are impossible to beat because the strikers score in bundles. Fast striker + finishing = goal per game. If it only was that simple...
