I'm currently playing on 2008, just about to start my third season, having a great time and not really wanting to start a new game. Now I hear this patch doesn't really work too well on saved games, but will I encounter too many serious problems throughout that it is essential I use this patch? Because I may as well restart now if there is...

The patch will work fine with saved games,It may take a bit of time for everything to kick in and the only thing you will miss out on is the player data etc but is no big deal if you are enjoying your saved game so I would say for sure d/l the patch.
