Those of you who've played the Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution series will be familiar with the "training match" feature that the user is allowed in the Master League or any League/Tournament mode. Basically this allows you to set up your tactics and formation and then test it against second stringers.
Not too absurd, eh?
But why can't we do that in FM? Here's what I propose...
Under the Training Menu (and also as a shortcut button under tactics), the manager is allowed to select "view training match" or "advance to training match".
This brings the user to a sort of "matchday", but obviously it only consists of your own team. After fiddling with your own tactics, you can select your opposition (from your reserves, U18s, etc) and have a go.
During this "match", there are no team-talks, no "rules" (ie, unlimited substitutions) and it can last for as long as you want it to.
So, this allows for:
- A graphical, real-time analysis of your team's tactics against in an admittedly "friendly" environment
- Fatigue, injuries, etc to still (possibly) occur
Managers would have to weigh the pros and cons of the two to find a good balance for maximum efficiency.
Setting up constant friendlies between your Senior and Reserve/U18 side isn't exactly what I had in mind either; this "training match" that I'm proposing won't do much for match fitness as compared to actual friendlies, but it will be a way to see how your players fit into your tactics, or vice versa.
Of course, this won't be a mandatory part of every day in your FM career, but a selectable option.
brilliant idea! training matches were an option (not viewable) in fm05 iirc, and obviously take place in fm08. there is no reason not to impliment this is fm09.
it might even give developers a better analysis of the match engine too.
IIRC something like this was in LMA Manager although I never tried it myself. IMO the whole of training needs improving and this sort of thing would be great.

I dont see why its missing the point.
You can achieve pretty much everything you say by arranging a friendly against your reserves or u18s.
