I have had this problem since FM07 and really don't know where i'm going wrong.
At the moment I have a promising striker, 19 years old, labeled the next Henry. He bangs them in for the reserves and has had a decent spell on loan in League 1.
The problem is thus.. Whenever I introduce any kind of youth/young striker up front my team creates very few chances in the game. I understand that maybe his mental attributes are not good enough and he might not be getting in positions or on the end of chances. But what can I do about this ? Whenever I play ANY young striker up front I get no highlights of my team attacking and I generally have around 4 shots on goal in the entire game. If I substitute him then normal service is resumed.
Surely he should get on the end of some chances but maybe miss them ? I can bring them on as subs but unless they score they tend to get a 6 which leads to poor morale and then the fans complain about their performance.
Anyone else had this problem or able to offer a solution ?
the biggest shortcoming of young players is generally their physical attributes.
if they are an attacker lacking in strength, it will be difficult for them to hold up the ball or win challenges against the burly defenders of top flight football. unless they have exceptional off the ball / anticipation / pace / acceleration attributes they will find it very difficult to get chances.
T-Bag, what team are you? I'm guessing if you have the next Henry you are a top team, so this may not be ver useful advice but I find that in his training put up Strength and Aerobic training slightly higher and concentrate on building up his acceleration and pace. This allows him to get behind the defenders more, especially if you have your central midfieldrs playing through balls. This works better in the lower leagues however, where the Centrebacks lack pace.
Another good tactical tweak is to put him in as a target man and have your team play 'run on to ball' under target man settings, this has the same effect.
League cup games and long loans build up players ability.
I tend to wait until there 21-22 before they become 1st team regulars.
If he's pacey I'd use him as an impact subsistute late in games.
To be fair this particular player hasn't really developed as well as I had hoped and i'm not sure if he will ever become a top striker. But I do get this problem generally with other players too.
I might give the target man a try, he does have 17 heading. I've sent him back out on loan for the rest of the season now.
I'd say give it time. I'm pretty sure the game takes into account which players commonly play with each other. Introducing someone new to the mix may throw this off initially, but in time he'll become "accepted" as part of the common squad
