That doesn't mean there isn't a problem but I'd like to offer possible reasons for why some of these things might happen.
Goal 1 - Defoe may have better anticipation and positioning than the defender in question giving him a headstart in knowing where the ball may end up and therefore being able to leg it in a straight line towards it. Or the defender may have been in an advanced position of the ball so he had to turn around to chase it whereas defoe was facing it and could just sprint straight towards it. They both ran towards the ball at the same time, Defoe(antic 16 pos 8), Faubert(15,17).
Goal 2 - How can you tell he jumps and wins the header? The ball may have been 5 foot from the ground making it the perfect height for defoe to get to. There's no way to tell. The text read "Defoe gets above Samba to win the header".
Goal 4 - Fair enough, this one just looks like an annoying glitch. However, does Ferdinand have the 'tries to play his way out of trouble' preferred move? If so this could cause him to dally on the ball and try and take it round defoe, in turn allowing defoe to steal the ball from him. He has no preffered moves.
Or I may be wrong and none of the above scenarios is true. The problem is that it's too hard to tell when looking at the 2D match engine, anything could be happening to be honest. But the above are some reasons as to why these things could quite realistically be happening.
| Fair enough, cheers for taking the time to answer mate. In this case it seems you may have a genuine issue. As I said I can't really comment as I play lower league and the players are so useless that you don't notice these things.
Saying that I do have a striker with 16 for acceleration and pace (he's rubbish at everything else like) and he absolutely flies by most other players in that league every time, especially defenders. He's never outpaved in a fair sprint to the ball, unfortunately he doesn't really do much with the ball once he reaches it but that's simply because he's technically useless.
It might be worth you mentioning this in the bugs forum and uploading a PKM of the match in question so the test team can have a look at it.

Cheers mate, i appreciate the reply.
I cant help but think though that without a total overhaul of the match engine nothing will change?.
At the moment i'm also going through an AI induced bad run, where my strikers who were averaging almost a goal a game have basically stopped scoring, despite having as many if not more attempts than usual?.
The tactic i use is not one of those 30 shots cant score ones neither, it usually creates around a dozen great chances a game and still is, but we have even started missing the open goal rebounds at this stage?.
This is my third season and i've witnessed the same dry spell twice a season in each one and i know for a fact that it will stop just as suddenly as it started.
I have now drawn my last three games 0-0 and have seen scenarios where the keeper is making 4 or 5 saves in the same move, it really is absolutely ridiculous. Four of my last five games have seen the opposition keeper as MOM and i'm bored to death of playing such an obviously pre-determined game that despite a whole season of rotation has also seen me lose 6 first team players to injury, although my back up players are just as good and as such i cannot put the form down to the injuries.
I'm starting to think its time to pack it all in, there is just no sense of fairness or achievement anymore?.

i find the absurdity of the match engine a bit disheartening
it breaks from the realism of the game so much it just becomes a bit of a drag

I scraped a 1-0 home win over Blackburn, saw an immediate improvement in moral which has dipped really low lately and had an away game to Sunderland next who were on a bad run themselves and their morale was abysmal, within 30 minutes we were 3-0 down as they started the game playing like Brazil, beautiful one touch football, with probably just as bad a squad as they start the game with?.
Its just awful, there are NO excuses for it whatsoever.
Dean Ashton has now gone 960 minutes without a goal.

Played Chelsea away next match and after a tight and hard fought first half we led 1-0.
Ten minutes later we have a player yellow carded twice and five minutes after that we are 2-1 down, before yet another player see's red.

| It seems this morale/quicksand thing only effects strikers when playing as strikers. I stuck Johnston on the wing for a while then whe he went back to striker he was banging them in.
McFadden scored 0 goals all season..he is a natural striker..no comment was ever made about him suffering from loss of confidence as he played most of the time on the wing. How long you might need to play the striker in a diiferent position b4 the morale/confidence issue resets itself is anyone's guess.

| Thats true but then the commentary should reflect this.
Im not saying it isnt the case but the commentary doesnt offer as much insight as it could.

I don't understand this match engine bashing. Based on my recent experience (watching full games in full screen, 8.01) the match engine is the closest to real life it has ever been, by a country mile. You also have to remember that there are misrepresentations in the graphical version of the match engine, a dot may not be exactly where the dot is shown, allowing players to seemingly leave faster players in their wake. Or so I saw someone from SI say somewhere (convincing evidence, no?). Either way, I'm loving the new version of the engine.
