I started a game as Harrogate Town.. all seems to be going swimmingly well, except every time I play at home I seem to win fairly comfortably..except when I'm away from home I get a kicking. it's a bit unrealistic like. I've found it in every version of CM/FM though, if you're on the right hand side of the screen, you tend to do worse (even if the game is at a neutral venue!)
I used to think like that too on the older CM games. I was always paranoid that the game purposely made me lose away. But you just need to be a little more cautious, put your defensive line a bit deeper and play a bit slower than usual.
Some of my best results have been away. Won Valencia 2-1 away, Arsenal 5-0 away, Liverpool 4-0, Tottenham 3-0, AC Milan 2-1
I agree about the neutral venue comment - I always seem to feel like I'm playing as an away team if I'm the club listed 2nd.
As for winning away, I've played 1 season so far with Fiorentina in FM08 and the whole shebang was a bit of a lottery. We won 1-4 away to runaway league winners Inter Milan and pulled off some other great, yet surprising away wins and some really naff home defeats.
In general home form will always be a lot better than away form though. I've had one or two teams (Whitley Bay in FM06 in particular) who often picked up as many points away from home as at home, sometimes even more, but I tend to find playing defensively rarely works for me because defensive instructions always seem really dodgy so I play a more attacking style (counter-attacking away from home) which is obviously going to be less successful away than at home!
No I'm having the opposite experience. As Juventus my away record was fantastic but at home we were always losing to teams we were expected to beat or scraping draws. Now with Rochdale who hadn't won a game at home before I took over and I've managed to win 1 match in 7 at home, but away I've picked up a couple of wins and rarely lose. I generally play more attacking and with more width at home, perhaps I need to up the tempo too?
