Since the new patch, it appears that the dreaded long ball back to own keeper is back! Very annoying. I have shifted my tactics around to decrease this but the AI teams still do it. Not a lot but enough to be annoying....And it can occur early in the game or late, does not seem to matter when and is not happening only bcse one team is time waisting
To be more specific, usaully the left or right fullback has ball near the centerline, under no pressure when all of a sudden he boots the ball all the way back to his keeper. Even worse, I have seen DM's with ball deep in oppostion territory late in a game in which his team needs a goal only to see him just boot it backwards to his keeper.
Despite this, you have made a very good game SI.

Don't listen to Fred_the_Red. Some people find it very amusing to be idiots and post useless comments such as that just to get a reaction.
Firstly, is this still happening if your team and player mentalities are attacking? Players with a defensive mentality are more likely to look for a backward pass than those players with an attacking mentality.
I know the argument 'it sometimes occurs in real life' is not always ideal if it something that's happening in FM a lot. But in this case I think it's relavent, particularly as you you say 'it doesn't happen a lot, just enough to be annoying'. Defenders do knock it back to the keeper in matches at time, even when it sometime seems a better option to hoof it forward.
As for your example of the defensive midfielder knocking it back even when the team needs a goal I'd guess it was because his mentality was still set to defensive. As he's a defensive midfielder I'm guessing he had a defensive mentality and perhaps the teams been set to more attacking but his individual mentality has not been altered. So then if he's not got a decent pass to play his defensive mentality will tell him to hold onto the ball by passing it backwards rather than punting it upfield and risking giving it away.

I think players with low Creativity or Decisions may have difficulty finding better passes to make and so opt for choices like sending it back to the keeper.
