I usually have an FM policy on contracts that goes something like this:
When it comes to December, and the players contract is due to expire next year (Eg Its December 07, players contract will expire in June 08) i offer them a new deal then (or earlier), if they reject I give it one more go. If they still reject, I sell them there and then, the reason being i would rather take the money for them, rather than of as January of next year them being able to move to any club for free.
At present I am Aberdeen, and both Scott severin and Karim Touzani are in this situation. When offered new deals both players states "They are not interested in renewing their contracts at this time", I have offered them easily high enough wages and bonuses etc but still they say no.
Touzani is worth £1.5M, Severin £3.5M - there is no way I can afford to let either of them go for free. I dont mind losing Touzani as I still have Considine, but Severin is a fans favourite, tean Captain and players favourite - both fans and players will go nuts if I sell him...I'm slightly worried about doing this as my manager status is only "young and talented manager" - quite worried about the reaction....but at the same time I can't afford to let a player of that value go for free.
Langfield and Hart both last season kept saying they were deciding at end of season so I left it, as I wasn't too worried about losing them, and the eventualy signed in the end - i doubt these 2 will do the same? Birmingham and Everton have been interested in Severin quite a lot recently so I'm pretty sure if they move for him in January he will take it....any advice, any chance he will change his mind?
Also I'm not sure if this is a bug (pre 8.01 patch) but since June both players have requested a transfer at least 10 times...I then either tel then I want them to stay part of bigger things at the club and they back down, or they insist they want to leave, I grant it and then a few weeks later they want to come off the list......?

Player last year of contract - sell or give time? Post #2
brilliant, this is the great thought provoking design of FM!
I have a similar procedure but with any key player i will offer a contract in dec, if they arnt interested i will not offer again until 1 month before it expires. I have ofund if you offer a deal in feb (for example) then other teams will offer, like whe nyou bid for a player.
I would advise to offload Touzani if you want the cash, keep severin and try to sneak through to the summer!

Player last year of contract - sell or give time? Post #3
I'm not worried about Touzani - I think Considine and Diamond can replace him (although ironically hes the player with my highest Average rating this season.).
Severin has just gone and injured himself, so no one will come i for him, so unless he re-signs it looks like I am losing him on a free.
I did manage to sell Lee Mair and Jeff De Visscher for £800k though, so at least thats some cash in the coffers.
