While Utd's transfer dealing in the past couple of days have been extremely promising and I feel the team will be even better next season than they were this, the chances of winning the Champions League look like being tougher than ever.
With Madrid starting to resemble a decent side once more and with their usual summer expenditure expected, they will be a force to be reckoned with again. Add to this a very good Sevilla side and what should be a resurgent Barca and the La Liga begins to pose as big of a threat as ever in the latter stages.
That being said, the biggest obstacle will again be the grueling Premier league season. To challenge for both competitions is nigh on impossible and I can't forsee Sir Alex being content to simply qualify for the ECL without posing any danger to the league leaders as Benitez seems happy to do. When you take into account that teams such as Newcastle and Everton will improve and the quality coming up from the championship is superior to that which it will replace, it seems hopeless to dream of another treble.
This is why I believe the Premier League have to do something to help its sides out in Europe, surely there can be some way in which it can be thoughtful towards the needs of it European representatives without harming the Premiership as a whole.
A quick example of the problem is Spurs having to play a game on thursday night and fly home for a game against chelsea saturday afternoon, if they were challenging for the league this would have really harmed their chances. Other examples of how it can effect teams not even in Europe were obvious, like Liverpool fielding reserve sides against teams in relegation trouble.
This problem clearly needs to be addressed.
