In my opinion the most annoying thing about FM is when you are doing really well, playing superbly, you save the game turn it back on a day later and you couldnt win a raffle!
for example, i was Man utd when my last 6 games in a row, including a victory at anfield scoring 26 and conceding 6. Vagner Love was on fire scoring 7 in the 6.
turned the game off. when i started it again i lost to PSV 2-1. Vagner love with a rating of 5. Then lost to West ham 2-0. Again a pathetic performance from Love 5!!
Yes, if I'm on a good run I like to continue playing as long as possible, but if I'm on a bad run I try to resist the urge to 'just play one more game' to try and sort it out as things always seem to get worse unless you take a break, maybe you get a better perspective and can fix things easier.
The thing I hate most about FM is when you take over a club the board blame you for them being knocked out of a tournament when it wasn't your fault but the fault of the previous manager.

Maybe it's the don't change things too much too often suggestion. I also find it best to leave it for another day when on a bad run. When I restart I probably leave things as they were and do well againwhereas if I had carried on may have tinkered again leading to another loss.
HAven't I read on here that there is a random "seed" that changes every time you load the game up? Something to do with replicating the randomness thats in real-life football.
Note: Im not saying the game is random. I re-iterate, I dont believe the results are random.
