I don't think I've ever seen Kuszczak complain about not being in the first team, I don't think I've ever seen Stee Harper complain, and I sure as hell never saw Rai van der Gouw go to the press about not playing.
But, has anyone ever managed to keep a second choice keeper happy for a long period on FM?
You play them in the cups and the odd less important league game, you have one of the finest custodians in the world as your first choice, and in many cases you even sign them as back-up status, which they happily accept! Yet come January and February, you cannot keep them happy, as they are in the press every week whinging, and my assistant manager is constantly in my ear suggesting first team football to keep them happy.
I'm in my second season with Newcastle and Stevie Harper has never complained. He played around 10 games in the first season. But he's a top person so i wouldn't expect him to complain. Ever.
This is something that has been bothering me as well. I'm always prepared for the moment where my backup keeper would go to the media and say "I want more first-team football" when his status is set to backup, not to mention his contract mentioned the same thing.
The only solution for me is to have 1 keeper. If he does become injured or unavailable, I just call on one of my U19 'keepers to come in. Sad, I know, but saves me from dealing with the backup 'keeper complaining and what not.
I always make sure to give my back up goalie at least 15 or so starts a season. I use him for easy games like 1st round cup games etc. This usually keeps him content.
Vincent Enyheama(spelt it wrong ithink) is my backup keeper at Portsmouth an he doesnt complain by my third choice kepper Jamie Ashdown is always moaning but when i accept a bid for him he wont leave ?
Yes, they do tend to moan regardless of who is first choice (Gigi Buffon for example). One way round it is to simply loan a keeper in on a season long loan, they never complain. Personally I'd recommend Almunia from Arsenal if you're a top club, you don't even have to pay his wages.
i sent Weidenfeiler(sp?) out on loan to PSV when he was whining too much. but Ustari and Enyeama never whine even though they barely get first team chances
i don't tend to play my back up keepers that much.
unless i'm grooming a youngster to be the next best keeper but i tend to ship them off on loan to championship sides or fellow prem sides when their 18 years old for a few years.
if you give them a long contract though it doesn't matter if they complain because their yours for 5 years.
I generally just give them an outing against crap teams I expect to beat. It does bother me though, that you can't have a true backup becasue they complain. I think that if they aren't as good as the first choice and are no where near the quality they should be happy. Or ask for a move rather than asking for more first team football.
