Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Tactics: New features you would like to see

It seems better to post this in here then in GQ. What changes going forward would people like to see SI make to tactics for future versions?

I'd like to see player specific tactic instructions be added as another layer of configuring tactics, that way you can setup instructions for an individual that can be applied whenever he is on the pitch. Thus player instruction > position instruction > team instructions. This one of the options I think is lacking at the moment.

Only other things I'd like to see is some tactical analysis tools, such as graphical overlays to indicate runs, passes taken, player movement etc. It's obvious SI are trying to mimic the tactical representations used in alot of books and also in ProZone, it's time to take it to the next level and give some more analysis tools.

Firstly tactical instructions that players actually listen too!!!

One slider I would like brought in next time round is an option for strikers. Eg Long Shots/High Shots/Low Shots/Round Keeper/Mixed. Something like that, just so it stops my pesky strikers shooting straight at the keeper when clean through!!

As I have said before I like the idea of actually having two options in the game. One option for the tactical geniuses who do everything themselves and then an automatic setting that allows people to create a tactic "but" the game eg an Assistant Manager setting automatically detects a players strengths and weaknesses and plays him in that tactic as he actually would do.

You can already do that, it can be a bit time consuming though but worth it in the long run. Something a bit simpler would also be very welcoming from me

That already exists on some level....

Id love to see tempo added as an individual instruction rather than team.

- More options for attacking free kick instruction. Like corners.

- Even better, set pieces design. Although I understand this is hard to make it balanced.

- Ability to instruct players to mark specific opponents at defending set pieces. I know managers who do this irl.

- "distribute to" instruction for every player. Even better, "distribution hierarchy": E.g. ability to tell my winger: First you look for striker, if he is not reachable then you look for right MC, if he's not reachable then you look etc.

Tempo slider for each individual.... So my attackers can slow play down heavily up front to try and snatch a point from big opponents.

i want to see the ability to put a position to a job, eg centre forward to TM, instead of crouch, or DM to playmaker instead of alonso, also the assman making comments like "they are attacking centrally, better play narrower to better defend them", just some simple tips from him basically

Targtet Men and Forward Supply
I think target man and striker instructions in general could be more subtle.

For example instead of picking one option from the three, it might be possible to pick two options and specify not the other one. Take Michael Owen as an example. Here (if I could) I'd set him up as target man with supply set to feet and run on to the ball but not/never to head.

Similarly, I think you should be able to set up how your two (or three) man strike partnership is to be supplied i.e. being able to give instructions for more than just the one target man. So to continue the current example:

Michael Owen: to feet/run on to the ball but not to head

Viduka: to feet/to head but not run on to the ball.

This way the current useful settings as to mentality, individual instructions and hold up the ball would be all the more meaningfull.

In this example I might then choose to have:

Viduka: mentality normal hold up ball, through balls often, mixed forward runs.

Owen: mentality high, forward runs often and perhaps run with the ball too.

Free Kicks
I think it should clearly be possible to set exactly whoever you want to take EVERY free kick should you so wish, instead of the deeper free kicks being taken by a brutish centre back with less skill than a heavily sedated Titus Bramble.

DC roles
This may just be wishful thinking but as common as having a big man and a little man up front, it's becoming ever more common in the modern game to have a quicker less big DC and a slower bigger DC combination. So it would be great if you could set one DC to go and attack the ball and one DC to drop off and sweep up, albeit you can sort of achieve this as things stand.

With and Without the Ball Instructions
Again this may be wishful thinking but wouldn't it be great if we could have a feature that was half-way between how things currently are and the with/without ball screens from back in the day. Certainly in terms of realism real managers tell their players exactly where they want them to go with and without the ball. I know this is possible to a great extent currently using mentality, closing down, defensive line and arrows but wouldn't it be great to simplify and visualise it like it used to be.

Feedback and stats
Simply something a lot closer to pro-zone and a lot further away from....well what we've got currently would be great.

i would like to see team settings templates, similar to the "set to position.." options already available.

si approved settings for counter attacking football, pressing, defensive, etc.

this i feel would satisfy both tweakers, and set and forget managers.
