Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default A Question for the knowledgable ones...

I am trying to understand this version of fm, so i was wondering if anyone could explain to me the effect of the mentality slider.

For example. If i have my Dline set at the lowest normal setting before deep, but have the mentality on attacking, what does that do to the defender during the match?

If If my striker is on defensive and closing down high, does that mean he will close down all the time, but if he was on attacking he would close down less so?

Just trying to understand so i can make my own tactic. Thanks for any help.

the mentality setting overrules the d-line setting as far as I know. Mentality is pretty much how far up the pitch the player is going to stand.

when a player is attacking ie his team has the ball then he is not going to be closing down at all.

Closing down = running at the person who has the ball and taking away their space.

Not sure that mentality would override defensive line as it should be completely separate. Think in real life terms, if your playing an ofside trap you want a high defensive line so you can step out quickly and easily too catch people out. If you've got slow CB's though you wouldn't want to play man marking with a high line because a pacey striker will be able too run onto through balls too much, you want them too stand off so they can position themselves to make an interception or crunching challenge!!

and so on.......

To me, the mentality sliders represents the risks the player is going to take ; eg. with high mentality, your player will try to give the ball in order to create a good chance, whereas with low mentality he'll try the easy pass.

@ xavierm
This would be more linked to creative freedom and the players own attributes. Mentality simply controls, in possesion or not, the players attitude.
For example if you have a full back with attacking mentality he will be more likely to bomb down the line to create an oppotunity for someone to feed him a through ball, this obviously leaves his defensive position exposed however

I give you a scenario, if you have the ball and mentallity is attacking. suddenly the opposition tackles and counter attack, what will the D-line be of any use, by then they will have an open attack an may score.

However, if they start off from a goal kick and you are defending the d-line comes into play but only for the defence, the strikers will not be coming back to defend and the midfielders may not track back if the opposition goes past your midfield.

Lastly, you should decide now on how you should set the mentallity and D-line to complement each other. For me, i used AC Milan with both mental and d-line to mixed and short passing wif slow tempo. Importantly no tight marking for centre backs so they will not be caught by fast players. I haven conceded for the 1st 10 league games playing inter and roma already.
