After the euphoric high of winning promotion to the Dutch First Division, devistation struck Katwijk as they set of for a celabratory team holiday to the East of England.
Their ferry that departed Katwijk's harbour at 9:00am on 21st June 2006 was caught in rough waters about 20 miles from the Dutch coast. Several distress signals were sent out to both Dutch and English coastgaurds but to no avail.
It is reported that the ferry had capsised with many people on board being thrown from the ferry itself. The rough waters were far too over powering for anyone that was unlucky enough to find themselves in the water.
Rescue crews from both England and The Netherlands were unfortunatly too late to help the sinking ferry and anyone on board. Although one lifeboat on the ferry had been miraculously deployed, however only eight people were found aboard it.
Amongst the eight suvivours were four people connected with the Dutch football club, Katwijk. These were their Chairman (Johann de Poepjes) Assistant manager (Dirk Naaktgeboren) Physio (Geert de Lange) and promising Dutch midfielder, Jason Libertine, who suffered a dislocated shoulder.
It is not known wether Katwijk will be able to take part in the Dutch First Division next season or even if they will be able to get over this tragedy. Only time will tell.
Our thought's go out to the families of the Katwijk ferry dissaster.
The Chairman of recently devistated Katwijk has announced this from his hospital bed where he is undergoing treatment for shock and pneumonia.
"After the tragedy and devistation of losing the majority of our squad, friends and family we have to pick ourselves up and continue in our lives. It won't be easy and we will have to be brave. I fully intend to keep Katwijk in the First division and help preserve the memory of our once talented squad.
If there's any football players out there that believe they have the courage and heart to carry on the great tradition of this club then please fill in this form and get in contact."

I'll not join this sign-up since I'm busy if I have to post continually. But Lib, are you Dutch? It seems the surnames are ridiculous. I suppose you know what Poepjes and Naaktgeboren mean.
