This was Oldham's fourth straight league victory which moved them upto 2nd place in the league. The game was soured for promotion-looking Oldham when Scott Vernon was sent off late in the game. Oldham's highest gate of the season saw Oldham dominate early proceedings and take the lead on 6 minutes. Good passing from the Latics, Killen found some space and received the ball from O'Halloran, he unselfishly headed the ball down for Vernon who tucked the ball in the goal to score his fifth goal in three games. On the quarter hour mark it was 2-0, Holden played a lovely ball to Vernon, he noticed Killen's run and gave the ball to him quickly, he raced past the defence and cooly finished past Roberts. Ex Man City favourite Georgi Kinkladze was stretchered off with an injury. A major blow to Brighton's chances. They nearly pulled one back, Watson hit the side netting from a free kick. Oldham went into the break two goals up. A couple of players were tired so changes were made. Killen and Haining came off to be replaced by Fleming and Perry. Into the second half the game became stuck in midfield much to Oldham's delight. Leon Knight nearly scored but Dean Holden who had a super game made a super last-ditch tackle to deny him. Knight went close again but forced his shot wide of goal. The game was peetering out when Vernon caught Cullip with a needless elbow, the referee was quickly on the scene to calm the brawl that was taking place and red carded Vernon. Brighton then managed to get a consellation goal from Wilkinson but it wasn't enough. Oldham go into the International break level on points with leaders Sheffield Wednesday. Manager's Comments: I'm very happy with the performance and result today. We played very well against a tough Brighton side. I never thought we would be in the automatic promotion spots, we're playing better than I expected. I just hope it can continue. On the sending-off of Vernon I thought it was harsh, there was no intent or malice. I've appealled to the FA to get his ban revoked. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully we can continue this fine form after the break. Simon Pope tells me that David Eyres is in need of a rest after today's game as he is showing signs of fatigue.
I warn Scott Vernon of his future conduct after getting sent-off, he feels the warning was harsh though.
Notts County loan Carl Pettefer for 3 months from Portsmouth and Barry Cogan of Millwall joins Port Vale on a 3 month loan.

Scout James Wills feels that Chesterfield defender Kevin Dawson would add depth to the Oldham defence. He looks a very good defender for this level so I ask for him to be scouted further. Under-19's Match Oldham Athletic Vs. Barnsley Boundary Park Oldham Athletic
Grange, Lever, Eardley, Armstrong, Mee, C.Taylor, J.Taylor, Jacobs, Barlow, Walker, Wolfenden
Subs: Treacey, Abbott, Winn, Lomax, Hall Barnsley
Flinders, Hogg, Oldham, Fowler, Farrell, Tolley, Tonge, Morris, King, Jarman, Briggs
Subs: Wordsworth, Cooke, Donnelly, Bradbury, Bridges Final Score: Oldham Athletic 1 Barnsley 1 Att: 146 MOM: Chris Grange Oldham Evening Chronicle: Barnsley dominated the first-half, they were unlucky for the match still being goalless. Chris Grange and the woodwork helped it stay level. Oldham had one or two chances but they were saved well. Shortly after the break Barnsley's pressure eventually telled. A corner came in and King climbed above Chris Lever and headed across goal into the net. Oldham got more of the possesion as Barnsley defended their lead. Possession wasn't turning into chances however and Barnsley looked more than comfortable, they could have increased their lead and killed the game off. Eventually Oldham's possesion eventually turned into chances and minutes before the end rescued a point, Matthew Barlow had a simple chance which he finished well. Oldham stay mid-table in the youth league.

The FA get back to me about Scott Vernon's ban appeal. They say I don't have valid grounds to appeal against his 1 match ban.So he is due to miss the next game against Rushden & Diamonds.
Chesterfield defender James Panayi has been ruled out for the rest of the season. He broke his leg in a freak training ground accident and wil lbe out for 7 months.
Pawel Abbott has joined Hartlepool United for 3 months on loan.

Early on Grimsby took the lead through their player/manager Paul Groves. Oldham then got into the game more and had a few chances but it was Grimsby who doubled their lead, Boulding beating the offside trap to finish calmly. After half time Grimsby made it three as Boulding found Mansaram free in the box, Oldham's defence was falling apart. It was soon four, Boulding managed to break free of a hopeless defence after a super ball from Anderson. Midway through the second half Oldham started the comeback with a goal from sub Spencer Whelan but couldn't add anymore. Grimsby had taught Oldham a lesson in football. It was a disappointing comeback for Matty Appleby in midfield, he can only improve.

Cheers Gino. Thanks for reading. Eyresy is doing fantastic for me so far. Just hope he don't retire at the end of the year, he normally does but so far nothing so that's good. Saturday 11th October 2003 Youths No Game: Cross Country AM Scott Vernon has been disciplined further after his sending off last weekend. He has been banned for a further 2 matches meaning he'll miss the Hartlepool league game and the Carling Cup trip to Newcastle. A major blow. England played their final group game to qualify for Euro 2004. They were up against Turkey. The winner would qualify automatically for the Championships. Even if England drew it would be ok for them to go through. Turkey took the lead though in the second minute through Nihat. England threw everything but couldn't manage to equalise. Turkey go through, England go into the play offs. England Team: Kirkland, Neville (c), A.Cole, Campbell, Woodgate, Beckham, Hargreaves, Dyer, Gerrard, Beattie, Owen
Subs: Robinson, Murphy, J.Cole, Rooney, Brige, Parker, Scholes
Results from other Home Nations:
Scotland 1 Lithuania 0 (Scotland Qualify for the Playoffs)
Greece 4 Northern Ireland 1
Wales 1 Serbia & Montenegro 3 (Wales Qualify for the Playoffs)
Switzerland 1 EIRE 3 (EIRE Qualify for Euro 2004)
In other transfer news Brentford strengthen their squad by signing Marcus Bigont from Rushden & Diamonds for £26k.
