Rep Power: 0 | Keep it up and I think we might do well in the playoffs... - Cheers
Thursday morning, and as ever, despite victory there's bad news. This time it's in the form of a suspsension, with Kevin Hill set to serve a one-game ban after picking up five bookings in his Woking career.
Saturday's Conference Player of the Month award suprised nobody - Lee Collymore getting over 70% of the votes cast. Collymore had a vintage month, bagging 8 in just 3 games as the Cards excorcised the demons that appeared to set in over Kingfield throughout December and January.

'Magpies win first League Cup' [/b]
" Newcastle United this afternoon beat Southampton 5-4 on penalties to win a pulsating League Cup final. Newcastle opened the scoring through Sanli Tuncay on 14, before Southampton's Kevin Phillips scored either side of the break to set up a tense finish. Craig Bellamy levelled 6 minutes from time, and after a tense period of Extra Time, penalties ensued. Southampton defender Fitz Hall missed the crucial kick - Newcastle winning their second major trophy under German manager Rudi Voller .
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
While Newcastle celebrated, Fairway was concentrating on landing a replacement loanee striker following the departure of Kyle Moran . After watching the reserves lose 1-0 to Fulham on Tuesday, he finally completed the deal on Thursday morning - in time for the player to be registered for Saturday's game.

'Meet The New Boy - Liam Craig'
"21-Year old Scottish striker Liam Craig has joined Woking on loan for the remainder of the season. Craig, a hardworking striker with plenty of aieral ability has joined the Cards from London rivals Barnet , and Woking will pay 10% of Liam's wages for the remainder of the season.
Liam began his career at Ipswich, but after five seasons of only Reserve and Under 19 football, he left the East Anglia club in the summer of 2006. Portman Road had been a happy hunting ground for Lee - he scored 37 goals in an Ipswich shirt. He quickly found himself picked up by Barnet, and it is at Underhill where manager Stuart Fairway spotted him in a Reserve game. Lee is yet to make his senior debut, but has a considerable pedigree at non-senior level, with 17 goals for the Bees to go alongside his 37 at Ipswich.
Liam joins us initially until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent move." Report by Chris Bonner

Kevin Hill - Suspended - (1 of 1)
With only Hill suspended, Fairway would almost a full-strength side available for the first time in some months. Narada and Scott Canham would be recalled - Davies rested, with Canham replacing the suspended Hill. New signing Craig would be involved - named amongst the substitutes - with the striker taking the number 9 shirt formerly worn by the player he replaces, Moran. Woking looked hungry, and started well - Frecklington in particular busily spraying passes all over the pitch. On 17 though the Cards saw their pressure result in a goal - Scott Canham passing the ball into the path of Rob O'Brien . The midfielder picked it up around 30 yards from goal, before cutting inside Mathie and curling a wonderful shot past 'keeper Coupe from the edge of the box. On 22 Scarborough could - and perhaps should - have levelled - McGhee's pull back headed powerfully at goal by Stephen Tarditi, but tipped onto the bar by Bayes. Woking were still dominating though, and just before the break, should have made it two with a powerful, low drive from Scott Canham stopped by Coupe at the near post. The second half started in far scrappier fashion, with little goalmouth action for a long while. With new striker Craig on for his debut, Woking again began to dominate - Amos Foyewa's hard work earning little reward though up front. On 79 the Cards would get a deserved second - and a dream debut for Liam Craig . The Scotsman's first goal for Woking came in classic fashion - a diving header into the near post from Foyewa's cross after a quick counter-attacking move. Scarborough were beaten after that - though sub Phil Collier, a one-time Woking trialist, saw his shot well saved by 'keeper Bayes.
Woking 2 - Scarborough 0 (O'Brien, Craig)

Sunday, and while the unpopular John Gregory has been sacked by Sheffield Wednesday , for Fairway the staff issue is far closer to home. Assistant Matt Crossley is out of contract at the end of the season, and Fairway's right-hand man is - according to Chairman Chris Ingram - costing too much, with the £500 a week contract apparently a burden that Woking are finding it hard to bear. Equally Crossley isn't keen on a wage reduction - and by Wednesday, the future of Fairway's assistant was looking very shaky indeed.
After a quiet week - with only Craig Robertson , a one-time Woking target in the news - the Kilmarnock youngster set to spend the rest of the season on loan at York - Fairway added two more trialists to his squad ahead of the weekend.

'Meet The New Boy - Andy Poole'
"Central midfielder Andy Poole has joined Woking on trial for a fortnight. Born in Yaxley, Andy joined his schoolboy heroes Arsenal straight from school, playing for the Gunners for two seasons before leavign just after Christmas.
Andy, 18 is primarily a central midfielder, but can also play on the right - although his uncompromising, determined style is best employed through the middle. Though he never made a senior appearance for Arsenal, Andy did score 8 times from midfield at Under 19 and Reserve level.
'Meet The New Boy - Jamie Porter'
"The second of our trialists, Jamie Porter is a versatile youngster who can play at left back, central defence, central midfield or on the left of midfield.
Jamie signed for hometown club Birmingham City as a youngster, but after completing his YTS course, was released days after his 17th birthday in June. A hardworking and determined player, Jamie is nauturally left-footed, and has joined Woking for a fortnight in a bid to impress manager Fairway" Report by Chris Bonner
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Initial impressions of the trialists were mixed - Andy Poole impressive, Jamie Porter less so - but both will have at least a couple of Reserve and Under 19 games - a maximum of four - to impress.

'Quakers Promoted with Seven to go'
" Darlington have been promoted from the Conference after a 2-1 victory against Halifax at The Shay. Darlington have dominated the league this season, and currently lead second placed Woking by an incredible 25 points - with seven games still to play."
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Darlington's promotion suprised nobody - it's been likely since before Christmas - but the manner in which the Quakers raced to the top spot perhaps overshadowed the league this season. Sunday though would be a busy day for Fairway - after hearing of Lucas Radebe's dismissal by Reading earlier in the morning, he saw the Cards' Under 19 side gain a more than creditable 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea - with both trialists, and goalscorer Paul Lynch impressing.
It proved a good week for Woking's second strings - on Tuesday a 4-0 win over Farnborough saw some more impressive trialist performances, with Poole in particular looking a potential gem. Galbraith and Coo were both amongst the goals, with ex-Spurs winger Galbraith having a fine game in particular. Woking v Farnborough - League
After the return of Kevin Hill from suspension, Fairway had a fully fit first team squad for the first time since taking over at Kingfield. The result would be an unchanged team, with Hill replacing Davies on the bench to offer a slighly more attacking option. Keen to make an early impression on their local rivals, Woking began very well - and on 13, took the lead with their first real chance. It came from a Farnborough break - Canham bravely tackling Potter on the edge of the Woking box, before the Cards countered. Baugley stormed away, cutting inside before passing to Amos Foyewa. The ex-Bournemouth man missed his kick, but did scuff the ball away from his marker - Lee Collymore taking advantage to score with a powerful shot into the roof of the net. Farnborough would let nobody dominate them though - especially not their local rivals - and it took a good Boardman challenge to deny Hurst on 15. Three minutes later young John McKenzie should have levelled, instead hooking over the bar from close range. Woking too had little intent in getting bogged down in a tactical battle, and on 37, doubled their lead. A well-crafted move involving Canham - in his element after returning from injury - and Collymore, the striker pulling the ball back for Lee Frecklington to coolly slot home from around the penalty spot. The game quietened after the break, with Woking beginning to impose themselves - Findlay brilliantly denying both Frecklington and Baugley in a three-minute spell just before the hour, but Farnborough would score late on to give the game a deservedly more even result. On 84 Danny Potter scored a sensational goal for the visitors - after winning the ball inside his own half, Potter sprinted forward, shrugging off Boardman, who did well to stick with the pacey youngster, before firing low past Bayes from the edge of the box. The final local derby of the season - and there's certainly been some classics - but the day would again belong to Woking.
Woking 2 - Farnborough 1 (Collymore, Frecklington)

The Cards now look comfortable for a Playoff place, and with the Transfer deadline coming up in just over a week, Fairway's thoughts turned to those final seven regular-season games, as well as those - potentially at least - three playoff games.
On Friday one player Fairway certainly did want to add to his squad - both for the present and the future - had a starring role for the Under 19's. Despite a 1-0 defeat, Andy Poole aquitted himself very well - performing sterling work in midfield. The former Arsenal man was offered a contract immediatley after the game, with Fairway keen to get him signed on an initial one-year deal.
Poole, meanwhile, wouldn't be the only trialist to arrive at Woking - nor depart. Martin Ford will count himself desperatley unlucky. An hour after arriving on trial for a fortnight, the former Spurs man picked up an injury in his first training session - the resulting knee ligament strain seeing him ruled out for a month, and rendering his trial - and therefore hopes of earning a Woking contract - dead in the water. Canvey Island v Woking - League
With Canham recovering from his knock, Fairway would again have a fully-fit squad to select from for the trip to bottom club Canvey, knowing that a victory would all but cement Woking's playoff ambitions. Equally, it would be a big game for Canvey - knowing a defeat could see them in dire trouble at the foot of the league. Woking had the best of a quiet first half - 'keeper Downey making a terrific save to deny Frecklington in the third minute. The rest of the half though was pretty poor - Canham again forced off with a knock just before half time - but Woking began the second half looking for an early goal. It was this (over) enthusiasm that saw the home side take the lead - Cards' Boardman handling on the edge of the box, and Terry Barwick rattling home a 49th minute free kick. After taking a minute or so to recover from the goal, the Cards surged forward - Downey brilliantly denying Hill on 62. Woking were not to be beaten though, and on 77, levelled - with a very well worked set-piece. Winning a free kick just shy of halfway, Gary MacDonald played the ball very deep - and Lee Frecklington was there, stealing away to meet the ball almost on the byeline and guide it into the far corner. Six minutes later Woking would seal the win that - on possesion - Woking thoroughly deserved. A Baugley corner to the near post caused real panic in the Canvey defence, and Lee Frecklington again rose above the pack to head past the unfortunate Downey. The 'keeper was awesome - just outshone by Frecklington for the Man of the Match award - but the win is just the sort of ground-out result that Woking need to take if they are to challenge in the playoffs.
Canvey 1 - Woking 2 (Frecklington 2)
Woking; 4-4-2; Bayes, Turner, Narada, Boardman (Replaced 78 Johnson), MacDonald*, O'Brien, Baugley, Canham (Replaced 44 Hill), Frecklington, Collymore (Replaced 78 Craig), Foyewa
Woking Position After Game; 2nd

Sunday morning - and the end of the line for two more managers. Ex-Sheffield Wednesday and England 'keeper Chris Woods has resigned from City rivals United after a year at Brammall Lane, while Graeme Souness has been shown the boot by West Ham - a 1-1 draw with Plymouth the final straw for the struggling Hammers.
After completing his move on Monday, Andy Poole got his Woking career off to the perfect start - scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory for the reserves over Scarborough on Tuesday. The game would be a final chance for Jamie Porter to impress, but it was not to be - he, as well as the injured Ford, let go after the game.
Thursday, and while West Ham moved swiftly to appoint Paul Hart , Transfer Deadline day passed off without incident for Woking. Fairway - happy with his squad - was also able to see the day pass without any bids for his stars, especially the on-fire Lee Frecklington .
A day later - and another job offer. While Second Division Sheffield United tempted the Woking boss, Fairway rejected the opportunity to move to Brammall Lane - and also Reading , with both offers totally unsolicited - but nevertheless a welcome reward for his early success at Kingfield.
He would be rewarded for this loyalty - on Monday morning, the Conference awards comittee handed out no less than three to Woking players and staff - Fairway taking Manager of the Month , Lee Frecklington awarded Player of the Month, while loanee hitman Liam Craig took goal of the month for his sweet debut diving header. Woking v Bury - League
No injury worries for the third game in succession - and yet again, Fairway left his side unchanged for the game with Bury - the visitors looking to 'do the double' over Woking after a 1-0 win early in Fairway's reign. A healthy, 4000-plus attendance at Kingfield saw an even, but entertaining opening - Spencer close with a drive on 6 for the visitors before Baugley saw his corner fail to clear the first defender - Unsworth - on 25. At half time Fairway replaced the quiet Collymore with Craig, and Woking seemed to have more aerial presence. The striker seems good on the ground too - Craig coming close with a snap-shot on the turn on 66, before Woking needed a brace challenge from young Chris Turner to prevent Daniel Lennon from racing through for a one-on-one with 'keeper Bayes. Bury did well - though both sides had chances, as April for at Kingfield begins with a draw - a scoreline not seen by home Woking fans since Boxing Day.
Woking 0 - Bury 0
Woking; 4-4-2; Bayes, Turner, Narada, Boardman, MacDonald*, O'Brien, Baugley, Canham, Frecklington, Collymore (Replaced 45 Craig), Foyewa

Tuesday morning, and a big blow for Andy Poole . It's been a rollercoaster season for the ex-Arsenal man so far - released by the Gunners, before signing for Woking and scoring on his Under 19 debut - but now he'll be out for 3 weeks with a calf strain.
Poole's absence didn't seem to worry Woking's Reserves - another goal from Paul Lynch - who will surely be hammering on the door of the Woking first team before too long - capped a fine day for the Cards' second string - a 2-0 away win over a strong Morecambe side just the result Fairway was after.

'Burnley Ease to LDV Glory'
"The LDV Vans Trophy, with the final being played for the first time as a midweek fixture at Wembley, ended last night with glory for Second Division Burnley .
The Clarets, 7th in Division Two, dominated from start to finish - veteran Glen Little bagging a brace before young Richard Caplow sealed the win with ten minutes left on the clock.
Brentford manager David Smith said after the game; "They were simply too good for us - they ripped us to shreds, especially down the wing - Glen Little may be getting on a bit, but he still knows every trick in the book."
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Enfield v Woking - League
Struggling Enfield - who almost held Woking to a draw at Kingfield - will go into action off the back of a handy 2-1 win at Aldershot, knowing that another three points will give them a serious boost in the bid to avoid the drop. Woking meanwhile make no changes - Fairway yet again having a fully fit first team squad - as the Cards try to bounce back after drawing with Bury. A win in this, the fifth-last game of the season, could see Woking assured of a playoff place. It was Enfield though who started the brightest - Winters coming close on 4 with a warning header, before Lee Collymore inexplicably played the ball back towards Boardman. The big defender certainly wasn't expecting the ball, although Collymore had little forward options, and lost his footing - David Clark running on to score his first senior goal. Woking were hit hard by the goal, with the strugglers siezing the iniative, and only prevented from scoring a second by terrible Meechan finishing on 11. The Cards did draw level though - on 20 an equally calamitous defensive mistake leading to the equaliser. Under little pressure, Enfield's Brooks tried to clear his lines with a risky ball across his own area - instead only finding Amos Foyewa , who gratefully smashed home from close range. After the break Enfield really came out of their shells, and encouraged by a suprised, but delighted home support, took the lead on 47 - Woking all at sea when Tom Winters stole away from his marker to nod the ball over 'keeper Bayes. 12 minutes later the home side were in dreamland - while for the visitors, it would all be a big nightmare. A stunning finish from Steve Perkins - beating Johnson before curling the ball past a stranded Bayes - put Enfield 3-1 ahead, and indeed it was becoming difficult to see which side were second and which lay 20th. Fairway made instant changes - replacing Frecklington and Collymore - and the changes had an impact almost instantly. A well-taken Liam Craig goal - the loanee hitman finishing after an angled finish from Amos Foyewa's flick on - put Woking back in the game - but a comeback was not to be. Enfield ran riot - again dangerous, before they finally claimed the winner on 82 - Perkins' pass forward coolly slotted home by Alex Meechan, with the striker scoring a goal deserved after an afternoon of hard work with little reward. For Woking, it's a case of what might have been - and to make matters worse, they finished with 10 men after Foyewa's late withdrawal through injury.

Shell-shocked - a word often overused in football, but perfectly justified in Woking's case on Sunday morning. As well as falling to their first defeat in six, the Cards would miss striker Amos Foyewa for a fortnight, with the Nigerian hitman ruled out with a damaged shoulder.
It would also be a busy day on the managerial front - Crystal Palace dispensing with the services of Chris Coleman , Colin Todd losing control at Huddersfield and Roy Evans sacked after a dismal season for Cheltenham .
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> www.wokingfc.co.uk - News - Tuesday 15/4/08
'Reserve Win tinged with sadness for Crossley'
"Woking's Reserves this afternoon beat Leigh RMI 1-0 with Asa Beard scoring the only goal of the game - but the game will be the last for Assistant Manager Matt Crossley , who is leaving Woking today.
"I was out of contract at the end of the season" said Matt, brought in by former manager Glenn Cockerill, "and as we couldn't agree on a new deal, the club and myself agreed it was time to go."
Manager Stuart Fairway said; "It's a big blow to loose Matt, who was a real help to me when I first arrived - and he's worked very well with the Reserve and Under 19 teams this season. I am hoping to bring in a new assistant in the very near future, but we are also having a reshuffle - Coach Ian Burns will take control of the Under 19 side, while my future assistant will continue as Reserve manager.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Thursday morning - and at last, the new Assistant arrived. After paying £12,000 to bring him back to England, Fairway was delighted that John Durnin would be linking up with him again. Durnin joined Fairway at former club Bac initially as a player, but after his retirement, became head coach. After discussions with Chairman Ingram, Fairway decided to spend the bulk of his transfer budget on the former Port Vale, Portsmouth, Liverpool and Oxford man.
It would be no suprise then that Fairway - a staunch Brighton & Hove Albion supporter - rejected the chance to manage bitter rivals Crystal Palace on Friday morning. Though it's clear his performance as Cards manager is attracting attention, Fairway told the Palace directors that the only way he would go into Selhurst Park would be as a visiting manager. Amos Foyewa - Injured - (Shoulder, 1 Week)
Since winning the title, Darlington have lost twice and won once - stuttering at the right time - after confident performances throughout the season. Fairway would be forced to make one change, with the injured Foyewa replaced by loanee striker Liam Craig - handing Chris Giles another run on the bench. Though still a top v second clash, the game lacked some of the usual atmosphere of such games, probably due to Darlington's promotion a while back. The game began slowly as a result, and on 17, Woking wasted the first real chance - Liam Craig firing his shot wide of goal having been put away by Baugley. Woking certainly had the best of the play though, and on 31, took the lead - Narada's ball into the box fired in off the near post by Jamie Baugley . The goal woke Darlington up before the break, and the Quakers rallied - Brian Wake having a brace of chances before half time. They carried this into the second half - Burt coming close on 49 - so it was slightly against the run of play when Woking made it 2-0 on the hour. A fine Canham pass picked out the run of the talented Baugley, who was able to cross for Lee Collymore to steer home at the far post. Darlington's attacks were now almost relentless, and after denying Wake again on 69, the former Carlisle man finally beat 'keeper Bayes on 75 - Brian Wake scrambling home his 13th of the season from a Wainwright corner. It would be the straw that broke the camels back - on 79 Darlington equalised through David McGurk, who had ran the length of the pitch to finish from Wake's break and subsequent cross. It would be desperate stuff from then on - Woking managing to hold out, and hold onto a point - and there's no doubting that Darlington really are deserved champions.
Darlington 2 - Woking 2 (Baugley, Collymore)
Woking; 4-4-2; Bayes, Turner, Narada, Boardman, MacDonald*, O'Brien, Baugley, Canham, Frecklington, Collymore , Craig

With the Bees of Barnet leapfrogging the Cards of Woking after Saturday's result, the Underhill club had secured their place in the playoffs - with Woking needing just a point from their remaining three games to do the same. For Canvey Island though, a home draw with Yeovil would see them relegated after a tough season.
By Wednesday, Exeter's season back in the big time had ended in defeat. The Grecians were promoted as Champions from the Conference last season, but had a terrible campaign - bankrupcy and an almost constant threat of closure throughout the season not helping morale. Andy Poole , recently recovered from injury, led the Woking Under 19's to a fine win in Ian Burns' first game in charge - the ex-Arsenal man playing a blinder as the young Cards ran out 3-2 winners at Forest Green. Elsewhere, Chris Coleman has taken a job that Fairway turned down - that at Crystal Palace. Woking v Morecambe - League

Amos Foyewa - Injured - (Shoulder, 1 Day)
With Foyewa almost recovered, Fairway handed Liam Craig another chance to shine up front, and perhaps persuade Fairway to make that temporary transfer a permanent one in the summer. Elsewhere he would make no changes - the aim simply to earn a point and secure that playoff place, giving a more relaxed run-in to the games which would decide Woking's season. Knowing what they needed to do, Woking set about Morecambe early on - with 'keeper John Danby by far the busier of the two - denying Narada, Craig and Canham within the first quarter of an hour. It looked like Morecambe would be able to hold out, under almost constant pressure, until half time - but on 43, the Cards broke the deadlock. A short, chipped Narada pass from Jon Boardman's free kick found Baugley, who made no mistake with a typically pinpoint cross into the middle - Lee Collymore stealing in to score his 30th goal of the season. After the break the game slowed a lot - with both sides clearly tired. On 71 though Morecambe equalised - with their first real chance of the game. Winning the ball in midfield, Stewart Drummond sprayed the pass forward, finding Dodgson on the edge of the area. The winger squared nicely, into the path of Ryan Sugden, who made no mistake from inside the box. Morecambe could have won it late on - Drummond swinging wildy at a shot, sending it arcing over the bar - but for Woking, the result was ideal.
