cheers Doctor Who.

Updates might be a bit erratic in the near future, moving and exams will do that
----------------------------------------------------------

The Dong Cup 4th Division draw tied us up with fellow 1st division team Herfølge at Herfølge Stadion. It was a good team, but there was a reasonable chance that we could beat them. However I had about 4 days to make the decision and we had a home fixture against a very strong Hvidovre side in 2 days. The league had to be my main priority though and I would definitely field the strongest possible XI against Hvidovre.

At the monthly dinner among the backroom staff, this time it was a barbeque, and their wives Brian Kristensen assured me that the board was still pleased with their manager. However, I wouldn’t have expected him to say otherwise in front of Sara and his own wife who had become close friends.
Off course we had daily discussions about the general plight of Vejle Boldklub, but it was often in this relaxed athmosphere we got the detailed discussions. The dinners didn’t only serve as a social event, allthough that was an important part of it, they also served as a way for the staff to get a feel for where the club was going.
The dinners had become a tradition in recent years and they had turned out to be a valuable addition to the daily routines. Most of us spent hours together on a daily basis, but that was on a professional basis. This was where we really got to know each other.

After the dinner I told Anders Lohse to look around for young talented players. I was aware that this wasn’t the usual time of the season to do so, but I felt that we might gain an edge on the other times by taking another look at what was available. It was still early in the season, but I had already started to think about possible transfers during the winter break. The youth search might not exactly give us what we needed right now, but I had a strong youth policy and I wanted us to take a good look.

I had felt for quite a while that the coaching staff was spread a little thin, so I managed to convince Brian to look around for a couple of good coaches. If we wanted to become the main supplier of Danish talent that was a part of the game where we had to be on top of things and at this point we weren’t.

After 3 minutes of the game Hvidovre striker Peter Rasmussen showed his intention to put and end to our good form, However, Kern Lyhne and Kenneth Knudsen put his effort to shame and the score was 2-1 in our favor. As Kern Lyhne completed his hat-trick at the 30 minute mark it would take more than a miracle for Hvidovre to get back into the game. During the break I had little to offer the players, so I encouraged them to carry on.
The 2nd half only offered 2 more goals, but that was enough to secure a hat trick for Kenneth Knudsen as well. Our scout Michael Lund had classified the Hvidovre side as being “very strong,” that left me wondering whether he was a bad scout or if we were about to hit an amazing run of form. Either way there was very little that could spoil my mood after this prolific 6-1 win.

There was one thing though. After the game there was a fax waiting for me at my office. It was from the Danish PFA. They didn’t have any plans in store on the issue of players whose careers suddenly end or face an unexpected standstill. It wasn’t that they didn’t think the matter important, they just didn’t have the resources, however, they were willing to listen to any input that I or others might have on the subject.
That left me pondering on my next step. I didn’t know what to do about it right this moment, but I just couldn’t let it go.

I went into the Herfølge game in two minds. I didn’t want to jeopardize the league for the cup, however, with the current form a win against Herfølge might give us the opportunity to go up against a Superliga team in the 5th round. So I rested some of my first team regulars, the ones in the worst condition, and played with a mixed XI. The 1st half was a tight affair with neither team gaining the upper hand. We did create more chances, but we had fewer shots on target. At the end of the 1st half it was nigh impossible to predict a winner.
The 2nd half continued the way the 1st half had started and allthough Herfølge had slightly more possession than us they were unable to make it count. In spite of Herfølge’s extra possession we managed to produce 5 chances while they only had one, however, the game was in a deadlock and extra-time would be necessary.
Not even extra time was enough to prove a winnner and the match went to penalties. Herfølge managed to clinch the match due to misses from Lyhne and Chris Sørensen. I told them not to be too concerned, the Dong Cup wasn’t our main priority after all. We just had to focus on the league now.

On the 6th and 7th of September we Brian told me that he had signed 2 new coaches. John Skovbjerg and Denis Holmark respectively. Skovbjerg was a coach with great tactical knowledge and tough disciplinarian who had an excellent grasp of young players. Denis Holmark was slightly more focused on young players and he had a real knack for evaluating a players potential. I was really excited about these additions to the backroom staff. They were exactly the kind of coaches I felt we needed on the team.

I don’t know if it was the strain of the Dong Cup match or just a general lack of concentration, but the match against Ølstykke didn’t start well. 7 minutes into the game Mikkel Junge rose above Mads Beierholm to send a powerful header past Stig Olsen. That score remained throughout the game allthough we had been dominant. It was just one of those things where everything went against the run of play and I had to hope that lady luck would smile on us during the second half.
It was a second half in which lady luck’s favour proved fickle. Jerry Brown managed to score a magnificent equalizer with less than 30 minutes on the clock, but as we were chasing the winning goal Nicolai Lund bagged a low shot with 5 minutes to go. After the goal Ølstykke put all their efforts on defense and grabbed 3 points in a game we should have won.

After the Ølstykke game we needed to get back on track and Jerry Brown proved to be the on form striker. He earned his Hat-trick by bagging 3 goals within the 30 minute mark. Nicolai Damgaard Pedersen did his best to instill a sense of hope in the Randers Freja squad as he scored from a header after 37 minutes. However, Tommy Schram shut them down 2 minutes later on a rebound drive. That put us ahead by 4 goals to 1 with 45 minutes to go.
The second half continued in the same manner as the 1st half and both Anders Nordstrøm and Tommy Schram added another goal to their account, however his hat-trick secured Jerry Brown the MOM award. The result propelled us to 9th in the table, still far from our goal, but close enough to start taking part in the promotion battle.

Welcome back Donald

I'll be reading this when I have time. The international has just started.

Are you going to the meet-up? It should be great fun. Oh.. and good luck avoiding the drop IRL though it could be fun for my club to play you next season

[i]Thanks Harleqin, and no I'm not going to the meetup, but I did find some time between all the exams to update this thing. Just to make sure that it isn't closed due to time limit or something like that
------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the 17th of September I was able to announce my most expensive signing so far. We paid £110k for talented Michael Ribers who joined us from Skjold. He was a right wing-back with all the right qualities for the position.

Michael Lund had told me that HIK had a mediocre squad, which explained why they were already deep into the relegation dogfight. Considering that our next game was against Herfølge whom we’d had some trouble with before it seemed like a good time to rest some of the regulars.
It took me all of 10 minutes to regret that decision as Riffi Haddaoui blasted a volley past Stig Olsen. However, the remaining regulars showed great morale as Gravesen and Lyhne secured a 2-1 half time lead.
By subbing Tommy Schram for Martin Pedersen I signalled a slightly more cautious approach. It didn’t seem as if Michael Blom had received the signal as he put us ahead by 3 goals to 1 after just 2 minutes of the second half. Anders Nordstrøm made it 4-1 before Haddaoui scored what was no more than a consolation goal 5 minutes from time.
Because we were playing an early match, supposedly due to the match being televise allthough I couldn’t see many cameras, the result put us in 2nd place in the division. A position that surely wouldn’t last long, but still it showed how close the league was at this point.

As Christian Høgni Jakobsen earned his first international cap for the Faroe islands I was pleased to see that he might be able to find his way out of the crisis. It still bothered me that I couldn’t put our only international player on the pitch, but those were the breaks. Allthough his performance was no more than average I was certain that he would become a regular feature for his nation, something I could only be pleased about. It also gave me an idea regarding my enquiry to the PFA. It was something I had to work on for little while, but it had potential.

After the remaining teams had played their games we were down to 6th, which was still 3 positions better than before this weekends fixtures. The home game against Herfølge would be crucial for our campaign, but I was confident in my players. They had shown their potential on more than 1 occasion, now I just had to make them more consistent.

5 days before the crucial Vejle – Hærfølge clash I got some very disturbing news. Kern Lyhne had strained his thigh during training and would be out of action for about 10 days. That put him out of the Herfølge game and I sould only hope he’d be ready for B1913 12 days later.
I knew he would be sorely missed against Herfølge as he wasn not only the Vejle player who had shown the best performances this year, he was also the best player in the league so far. Needless to say I had some thinking to do.

2 days later I got some news that truly cheered me up. Jerry Brown had earned a well-deserved call up to the Denmark U21’s. he hadn’t been chosen before and it wouldn’t be that long before he passed the age limit, so it was truly wonderful news and something that could only serve to boost his morale.

A dissapointing 3360 watched on as Kaan Metin took the game to us at Vejle Stadion. It took him all of 8 minutes to bring Herfølge ahead from an excellent pass by Chris Hermansen, but Kenneth Knudsen going to stand idly by and eqaluzed the game 6 minutes later. The Vejle fans had the same concerned look on their faces as I had as they watched captain Calle Facius show real signs of weakness for the first time this year. He was even booked for holding back Metin a third into the game, but I wasn’t going to sub him just yet. He was an experienced lad who had suffered some bad performances in the past, but he’d always come out on top. With a minute left of the first half Tommy Schram lined up the 20 yard free-kick and scored a real blinder.
Everything went according to plan until the 76th minute whereMartin Pedersen, who had just entered the pitch instead of Beierholm, was given the marching order for recklessly hacking down Hermansen. Naturally Peter Frank blasted the free kick right past Stig Olsen to level the score. With only 10 men we were crumbling and Herfølge took advantage of that as Mateusz Dobek scored the 83rd minute winner. To make matters worse Anders Nordstrøm strained his knee ligaments in the closing minutes of the game. So unless Lyhne recovered from his injury we’d be missing 3 midfielders in the upcoming game against B1913.

After the match I had a chat with Martin Pedersen were I made it clear that the kind of behaviour he had shown was not acceptable from a Vejle player and if the press asked me I would have to condemn his actions. He knew he had probably cost us the match and he was heartbroken, so he accepted what I had to do and promised that he would do his best to avoid that kind of situation in the future.

After the game we were 7th, which wasn’t disastrous considering the season so far, but my main concern was thatwe were losing ground to the leaders. We needed to close them down ASAP if we had any intentions of playing a part in the end game.

Well the above post was the thirteenth and for superstitious reasons I want to get past that number as fast as I can
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The 6th of October gave cause to celebrate. Jerry Brown had earned his first U21 cap in a 2-1 win over Yugoslavia. He had performed well, allthough not exceptionally, but I was still certain that it wouldn’t be his last U21 experience.
I was happy for the kid, I knew well how it felt to represent your country even if it wasn’t on a senior level. When he got back I could see on his face what I already knew. He’d had a taste of the big time and he wanted more. Everyone who had been there felt that way.
I saw a young lad with a protentially great future ahead of him and I couldn’t help to think about what I probably missed out on. I was never in the same class as the Laudrups, but I was a solid holding midfielder. I’d already had offers from a couple of foreign clubs, from Germany and England and there were several scouts at the game in Manchester. However, I lost it all in one tackle. The doctors did all they could, but I never got back on the pitch again.
I was always happy about my players earning international caps, but it also sparked a bit of jealousy in my heart. I couldn’t help it, I saw these young players go on to the great futures they truly deserved, which I had also deserved, but never had the opportunity to pursue.
One tackle and all my talent wasn’t worth a busticket. It wasn’t as if it still tore me apart, but there were still moments of melancholy. I knew destiny had worked against me in a most foul manner and at the time I still had not found a way to reclaim my place in the annals of football.

The next day there was finally a bid for Christian Høgni Jakobsen, Football Club Nordjylland were willing to pay the £10k transfer fee and I saw no reason to deny him the opportunity to play first team football that he couldn’t get here. The bid came on the same day as he earned his 2nd cap for the Faroe Islands so I expect he must have been in a joyous mood when he went to sleep.

Allthough Kern Lyhne was ready for the match against B1913 Søren Møller Jensen’s Hat-Trick inside 30 minutes of the first half put us under pressure. Things turned from bad to worse when Beierholm had to leave the pitch with an injury after 13 minutes. The only light in the darkness was Lyhne’s goal to make the score 3 – 1 after 39 minutes. I could only hope for a better performance in the 2nd half.
Hostile refereeing and a superb performance by B1913 keeper Henrik Rasmussen kept from equalizing the match. In the end Søren Møller Jensen scored their his 4th goal before we managed to make the final result 4-3.

Beierholm had as it turned out suffered a gaxhed leg and would be sorely missed for 2 weeks. As for the league things were hanging in the balance, we could still make it, but we had to start moving soon.

Allthough it hadn’t been a very encouraging, I’d promised to take all the lads to a dinner to say goodbye to Christian Høgni Jakobsen. Everybody had a good time and they all wished him well.

Allthough the results of the previous 2 games were a major cause for concern, the fightback during the second half was ecouraging. I had made some tactical adjustments on the fly that had really proved useful. I was going to work a bit more on that in the hope that it might be the key to success.

45 minutes of the first half at home against rivals AC Horsens the changes I’d made seemed to work like a charm. Not only did we dominate the possession of the game, we also had 8 shots against 1 from Horsens with 7 of them being on target. The surplus of that half was a 2-0 lead and I was quite pleased.
The second half saw AC Horsens pushing for goals and even though they had 6 more chances in this half there was no way past Olsen. A fine strike by Lyhne settled a game that finished 3-0. Lyhne earned the MOM award in a game that brought the best performance of the team this season.

By now I’d realised that it would take more than one match to assess the results of any tactical changes I’d made. After 11 minutes of our first league game against Skjold I was getting worried, an early goal put us under pressure. We managed to equalize on a low drive from Brown before Skjold put the first half to bed with a goal in the closing seconds of the half. During the break I was contemplating what I was doing wrong, if anything. However, I felt it was too early to make further changes. The changes I’d made weren’t in any way extraordinary, I was merely tweaking the way the lads made their runs to make us more focused.
The second half proved me right. We got goals from Peter Gravesen, Martin Pedersen and Kern Lyhne which was enough to secure a 4-2 win. Even as we rose to 5th in the league we were still barely in contact with the leaders, but it was starting to feel right. It was also the game where Martin Pedersen showed why I had considered him talented enough to be at Vejle as he was awarded the MOM.

On October 24th bad news preceded good news. [/b]Klaus Eskildsen[/b] would be out for about 2 months due to a twisted ankle. However, as Ribers had more or less replaced him in the first team it didn’t really come as a huge blow. This could be the chance for Kielstrup to get some first team action as backup for Ribers.
The good news were that both Beierholm and Nordstrøm was back from injuries and ready for action. It was great to see the midfield ready for action as the first half of the season would soon come to an end.

Even though Fredericia got the early lead I wasn’t really concerned. They were a good side, which their current 2nd place in the division confirmed, but for the first time I saw the fire in my boys’ eyes. The fire every manager wants to see. They were confident and they knew they could beat anybody. After the Fredericia goal we completely dominated the match. The score was 1-1 at half time and I could easily have lived without the break, but I told the lads to go into the 2nd half with the same determination. If they did that nothing could stop us.
They did as I’d told them and cruised to a 4-1 win. Lyhne performed particularly well and added 2 goals and an MOM award to what looked to be a spectacular season for him.
Allthough we were still 5th we were now withing spitting distance of the leaders and had managed to put together what could be called a string of good results for the first time this season.

Allthough Sara had been prepared for what lay ahead she probably hadn’t realised just how time consuming my new position would be. At first she had been very understanding, but as time passed by she was getting annoyed. I couldn’t really blame her since I also felt it kept me away from the family for more time than I was content with. However, she had herself told me that this was the opportunity of a lifetime so I was determined to make it work. I made sure to spend all my spare time with my family and to focus on them when I was there. Hopefully that would be enough, but it was something that could lead to trouble in the future.

Brønshøj were having a really bad season. So far they had managed to collect 8 points from 13 games and their manager had been the first to lose his job. Even though they had the home advantage we had no intention of improving their season. A Lyhne goal on a cross from Schram was the only goal of the first half, but there was no sign that Brønshøj would be able to fight back.
Whatever their new manager had told them during the break it certainly got the job done. It took them no more than 7 minutes of the second half to equalize. I was beginning to think that we were going back to our old inconsistent ways when Kenneth Knudsen scored the matchwinner 2 minutes from time.

The last fixture before the winter break had set us up for a tough away game against Frem at Valby Idrætspark. The truth is that we were lucky to be only 2 goals behind by half time. If we didn’t manage to get our act together during the second half the league leaders would make us look like regular whipping boys.
The only credit we got out of the match was that we didn’t concede any further goals during the 2nd half. Promotion still looked like valid option, but we would have to significantly improve during the latter part of the season.

After the Frem game Chris Sørensen told me that he wanted to leave the club. He didn’t feel his contract was good enough for a player of his quality. I gave his contract the once over and realised that it was more than fitting for a player of his “Quality.” Don’t get me wrong Chris was a decent enough utility player and it was always great to have someone who could get the job done both in defense and in the midfield, but he didn’t have the quality to justify an improved contract.

I told him that I couldn’t comply with his wishes for an enhanced contract and that if he truly wanted it I’d put him on the transfer list. He realised I’d just called his bluff, but at this point he had to follow through on it, so he was placed on the transfer list. Hopefully someone would actually make a bid, cause improvements were always called for.

It was always around this time of the season the backroom staff took a weekend away from home to discuss the strategies for the remaining part of the season. We agreed to let the players go on intensive physical training untill mid January. They probably wouldn’t be too thrilled about that, but it was the only way to keep them fit through christmas.

Holmark made the suggestion that we tried to rotate the training schedules a bit more. A lot of the players seemed bored by the way they were training and didn’t really develop the way we wanted them to because of that. I suggested a one month rotation scheme which we all agreed on.

After that it was just a matter of figuring out which rotations we’d do for which players.

In late November we acquired the services of 21 year old defender Martin Andreasen from Hvidovre. It was my hope that he would help stabilize our otherwise shaky defense. His best attributes were determination, teamwork, tackling and acceleration. Other than that he was pretty good at positioning himself and his abilities in the aerial game were something that had drawn my attention as well.
We had to pay £100k for his servies, which pretty much depleted our transfer kitty, but I was pretty confident that he would turn out to be a fine investment.

Cold season was setting in and within 2 days 3 players had been confined to their beds. The only good thing about it was that there were no games in the near future and it would probably be over before then. I fully expected more players to get a few days in bed, but if it had to happen I couldn’t have picked a better time myself.

On another cheerful note Brøndby had completed the signing of the hugely talented B93 striker Newroz Dogan. Good for him and good for Brøndby, and now he wasn’t going to wreak havoc amongst the division 1 defenses.

Allthough only 2 games had been played during November they had still managed to have some effect on the table.

I hadn’t really been concerned with renewing players contracts. That proved to be a mistake as Tychosen signed for B93. I had been too concerned about other aspects of management and had neglected to consider this a problem. I became apparent that club loyalty wasn’t a factor in modern football. I was off course dissapointed, but that couldn’t be helped. I was sure I’d also “rob” some of the other teams in the summer.
However, loosing Tommy Knudsen on that account was a far greater blow, and a huge lesson learned. Knudsen would move to Herfølge to continue his career, but he still had 6 months remaining on his contract.

Nordstrøm left the club on a happier note. Køge had payed £50k and we would also get 20% of any future transfer fee for the player. That meant we would probably have to look for another midfielder for next season, but that wasn’t an immediate concern.

By christmas I was able to look back at my first 6 months as manager. It was apparent to anyone that I had made mistakes, recent ones as well. All in all I was getting the hang of it though and like the pleasant boss I was I held a christmas party for the entire team and backroom staff. Nothing fancy just a nice little get together.

Søren wanted a bike for christmas, he was getting to the age where he felt he was able to make use of one. Sara being the good mother she was, was slightly concerned, but she was supposed to be. He loved that bike though, rode around on it all day. I’ve even kept it to this day.

On the 5th we struck back at Herfølge, they would get Knudsen, but we would get experienced midfielder Jens Madsen. Madsen was a complete midfielder, at 31 I felt we would get a good couple of years worth of his abilities, but that was a concern for the summer though.

As always the long winterbreak left the media struggling to find news. It seemed as if they were looking through a bunch of video tapes to figure out which players they could criticize. I was happy to see that they hadn’t singled out any Vejle players. The only other bit of news they had was from the African Cup of Nations. Granted there were some good games, but I didn’t follow it closely as we wouldn’t try to sign any of the players anyway.
