Did you play the Brazilian Cup?

How did you do in this competition?

If you win it you will qualify to next year's Copa Libertadores.

The month began with a trip to Santo Ângelo in the first round of the Cup. The home side defended deep and played for penalties, and we played straight into their hands, rarely threatening throughout the 90 minutes. Even the sending off of Laênio midway through the second half failed to give us the initiative. The shootout was woeful, with only three kicks finding the net. Unfortunately for us we could only get one and we crashed out of the competition at the first hurdle.

June – July 2004
Group 16 kicked off with a home tie against Bandeirante. Leandro Diniz gave us a fantastic start, scoring after just three minutes, and after a short lull in play Cristiano added a second. A third came from the boot of Cristiano five minutes before half time, and that was that.
We travelled to near neighbours Atlético Goinaniense and found the going tough. But we defended well, and in a six-minute spell around the half hour mark hit the home side on the break and scored through Cristiano and Cley. We added a third just before half time through Liminha, and not even a Leonadro strike late on could dent our charge.
Brazlândia are in our group this season, but I didn’t have a problem in selling Eliseu to them for a fee of £8,000. Juventude came to town for our next game, and provided us stiff opposition as we struggled to break them down. We kept up the pressure though, and twenty minutes from time won the game through Cristiano.
The bandwagon continued to roll as we travelled to União Rondonópolis, and again we came up against a stubborn defence. Michel scored three minutes before the break, and apart from a brief spell right at the end of the game we looked comfortable with the 1-0 lead.
The last game of the month was a home tie with Anápolis whom we had beaten 5-0 earlier in the season. But any thoughts of a repeat were swiftly put on the back burner when Nélson Bertolazzi struck, and although we came close to scoring, we never really deserved to. França added a second ten minutes into the second half, and we slumped to our first defeat of the season.

It’s always disappointing to lose, especially when you’ve not lost your first 21 games of the season. Still, Anápolis are a good side, and it’s not such a bad reflection on us. A win next week is the tonic that we require, and training during the week will be focused on achieving that.

August 2004
We started off poorly at Brazlândia, conceding an early goal to Neto. We did managed to stem the tide after that, and were given a helping hand ten minutes into the second half when Diego was sent off. It took us until six minutes from time to equalise through Cristiano, and Cley gave us the lead on 87. Cristiano added a third in injury time, and we had somehow snatched a victory.
Cristiano gave us an early lead away at Real, and although we never looked like conceding, we had to wait until 72 to wrap up victory when Chicão fired in a free kick.
We had a third consecutive away match, this time at Bandeirante, and Wesley gave the home side the lead early on. Liminha equalised with a scorcher just before half time, and that’s how it ended.
Our only home tie of the month, against Atlético Goianiense, was a bit of a let down. We only started to perform once Cley was sent off during the second half, but we didn’t deserve to win during the drab 0-0.
Leandro Diniz put us ahead at Juventude midway through the first half from the penalty spot, but we failed to take a grip on the match, and Dudu equalised midway through the second period. But we took advantage when the home side had Ramos da Silva sent off and Lu*s Fernando struck to give us a tight 2-1 victory.

This was probably the hardest month that we’ve faced this year, but we’ve ground out results and are now on the verge of qualifying for the last 32. In fact, a win at home to União Rondonópolis should put us through.

September-October 2004
The month got off to a good start at home to União Rondonópolis as Cristiano put us ahead midway through the first half. Things were made easier for us when Gláuber was sent off just before the break, but it took us until eleven minutes from time to score a second, and it came from the unlikely source of Marcos Roberto. The visitors pulled a goal back through Agnaldo four minutes from time, but we held on to win and confirm our passage through to the second round.
The trip to Anápolis was made easier when the home side had Raphael sent off seven minutes before the break, and Cristiano gave us the lead on the stroke of half time. Cristiano struck again on 78 to wrap up a 2-0 victory.
An early Wanderley goal was enough to give Brazlândia a 1-0 victory at our place as they looked to get out of relegation trouble.
For some reason, we had a five week break before our last game, and Cristiano struck early on. There was to be no more scoring as we prepared for the knockout stages with a comfortable win.

The second round draw gave us a tie against Villa Nova (MG), who finished second in group 13. This is now where the fun and games start, and we have to perform for every single one of our next few games.

November 2004
The home leg with Villa Nova was a bit of a let down as neither side played particularly well, and the game ended 0-0.
The away leg was a much better spectacle, and we took an early lead through Michel. Incessant pressure finally paid off just before half time when Cristiano added a second, and we closed out the rest of the match. Villa Nova did pull a goal back through Maia seven minutes from time, but we had done enough to get through. The third round draw saw us pitted against Marc*lio Dias who had beaten Passo Fundo 2-0 on aggregate.
We had a fantastic first half at Marc*lio Dias. Cristiano put us ahead on 21, and a lucky deflection allowed Liminha to double the lead three minutes later. Michel added a third on 33, and before half time it was 4-0 when Cristiano netted. Bruno missed a penalty seven minutes into the second half, but the home side did pull a goal back through Ivan in the final minute.
The second leg, at home, was a quiet affair, but Michel struck five minutes before the break to give us a 1-0 victory. Marc*lio Dias had Émerson Gaúcho sent off in the final minutes as we progressed through to the fourth round. We were handed a difficult tie against Pelotas. They dropped only four points in the group stages, and overcame Flamengo (PI) 2-0 on aggregate in the third round.
We had a fantastic opportunity to take the lead at home to Pelotas, but Leandro Diniz sent his penalty straight into the arms of the goalkeeper. We were though handed a boost when Perivaldo was sent off on 22, but Pelotas were defending deep and keeping us at bay. We did eventually get our goal, coming from the unlikely boot of Marcelo Borges, and we had a slender 1-0 lead to take into the second leg.
We played quite well at Pelotas early on in the second half, but a defensive mistake allowed Vantu*res in to score ten minutes before the break. Pelotas would go through to the final if the aggregate scores stayed level, and during the second half we hit the woodwork no fewer than three times. But three minutes into injury time Lu*s Fernando broke through the Pelotas back line to score and send us through to the final group stage.
So, we’re down to four teams and six games each. The top two will win promotion, and the excitement is all around the camp. Our last game in November was the first game of the group, at home to Ulbra. Lu*s Fernando struck on 20 minutes, and we had started the group the way we would have hoped.

Ipatinga and União Bandeirante are the other two sides in the group, and I reckon that we can get results against both of them. They drew their opening match, and so we already have a slight advantage, as promotion gets ever closer.

Good story so far.

Just out of curiosity, how have you done in the Brazilian Cup (played in the first half of the year)?

Also, who won Copa Libertadores in your game?

Went out in first round of the Cup on penalties. In terms of the Libertadores, I think it was Fluminense, but I'll have to check

December 2004
We began the month with a trip to Ipatinga, and William scored his first goal for the club on 20 minutes to give us the lead. Ipatinga were not really at the races on the day, but we had to wait until twenty minutes from time for Lu*s Fernando to score a second and confirm the victory.
We pummelled União Bandeirante at home from the outset, but couldn’t score and got hit on the break just before half time when Cláudio struck. We struggled to get back into the match during the second half, but on 75 Adriano was sent off and Carlos Henrique equalised from the penalty spot. Two minutes from time Cristiano put us ahead, and Leandro Diniz wrapped things up in injury time.
The trip to Ulbra began fantastically well when Cristiano netted in the second minute, but Ulbra were determined not to fall too far behind and looked lively. We held out though, and Leandro Diniz scored on 73 to confirm our promotion.
The party at Ol*mpico lasted only 5 minutes as Ipatinga came to town. Daniel Rossi was sent off and Léo blasted home the penalty. But within minutes we were level through Chicão, but on 21 Alexandre got in behind our defence to restore the lead for our visitors. Lu*s Fernando equalised within two minutes and put us 3-2 ahead on the hour mark. But eleven minutes later Goinano equalised for the visitors, and Ditinho struck the winning goal for Ipatinga ten minutes from time.
União Bandeirante had won promotion as well and were still in with a chance of claiming the title as they hosted us in the last game of the season. Such was the injury and suspension list though that we could name only six substitutes, two of whom were goalkeepers. We had to dig in our heels for much of the game as the home side dominated, but Flávio Mendes ended his season in spectacular form, denying União Bandeirante at every turn. Twelve minutes from time substitute Carlos Magno struck to put us ahead, and four minutes later Márcio was sent off for the home side. They lost interest, and Carlos Magno wrapped up victory with a scrappy goal in the final minute.

Wow, what a season! I didn’t really know what to expect when I first arrived, and I’ve won the State Championship and come ahead of the 127 other sides in our division. Things were nicely rounded off with the award of Manager of the Year for the division, and I am truly honoured. The squad will need strengthen over the next month before we restart our Goiás campaign, but we can afford a few days to celebrate.

Cristiano did fantastically well for us this season, carrying the can for us up front throughout the season whilst the other strikers were trying to find their feet. But for injury and suspension during the latter part of the season, he might have better his second spot in the race for Top Goalscorer in the division. But the real story of our season was at the back. Flávio Mendes was fantastic in goal, even keeping out Sérgio, and he was ably helped by club captain Marcos Roberto; a real rock in the heart of the defence. The fans though decided to recognise the efforts of Leandro Diniz throughout his debut season, voting him as their player of the season.

Preseason 2005
There was quite a bit of transfer activity as we rushed to get our squad together before the Goiás Championship started again. Roger and Sérgio both retired from the sport, and we added a number of other players to the squad. Santos, a goalkeeper, joined on loan from CSA for the season, and young defender Henrique came in on a free transfer from São Paulo. Defensive midfielders Jean and Claudecir both joined on free transfer from Atlético Paranaense and Palmeiras respectively, and Paraná lost their striker Flávio Guilherme, also on a free transfer. The only other signings were those of two wingers to provide cover for Leandro Diniz and Chicão. Alencar, who plays on the left, joins for £40,000 from Anapolina, and Léo, a young right-winger, joins for £28,000 from Sergipe.
We played only one friendly game, and it was against near neighbours Goiás. Leandro Diniz scored directly from a corner and Cristiano added two more before the break. Alencar came off the bench to score a fourth in the second half, before the visitors pulled a goal back as the game degenerated into a substitution-fest.
I’m pretty confident of our chances for the season, although we shall see how things progress over the next few months as we try to retain our State Championship.
