The English papers are getting all misty-eyed about
Man Utd goal-meister
Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Dutch international has been finding the back of the net with monotonous regularity this season and has the Old Trafford faithful purring with delight.
As
Newcastle suffer their third consecutive 3-2 defeat in the Premier League, the pressure mounts on
Martin O’Neill. Having left a position at
Celtic where he could do no wrong, his first season saw his team gain a respectable 4th place finish. But now lying in 13th place the highly-strung Irishman finds himself under intense criticism for the first time in his managerial career.
Lens boss
Joel Muller is now under some pressure to turn things around as last season’s champions languish in 10th place in the French First Division.
In Italy,
Perugia have tempted former
Sampdoria boss
Walter Alfredo Novellino to leave Serie C1A side
Fiorentina after less than 12 months at the helm.
Cwmbran Town have poached ex-Wales international
Peter Nicholas from non-league
Newport County to replace recently-fired
Dean Saunders.

Game of the Week
Saturday January 24th, 2004
Spanish First Division
Espanyol 4 Racing Santander 2
Santander came to the Lluis Companys Stadium in Barcelona confident of overcoming an Espanyol team that had failed to gain a league victory since November. This slump in form has seen Barca’s less-illustrious neighbours slip to their customary position in the lower reaches of the Primera Liga. Indeed the visitors established a comfortable 2-goal cushion 10 minutes into the second half only to see the dismissal of their captain and goalkeeper precipitate a dramatic collapse. The opening period gave no indication of the drama to follow and it wasn’t until the 14th minute that we saw the first attempt at goal when Santander keeper
José MarÃ*a Ceballos did well to turn away a nicely struck free kick from
Manel.
However, the visitors opened the scoring with their first meaningful attack of the game with a nicely worked passing move. Young Brazilian
Thiago Motta started the move when he swung the ball left to
Pablo Sierra. The midfielder laid it off to
Domingo Nagore who found
Motta continuing his run. The Brazilian picked out
Mario Ignacio Regueiro in the area and Uruguayan international slotted the ball home for his 11th goal of the season. Santander created a couple more chances before half time but
Rodolfo Bodipo and
Regueiro both failed to hit the target. The home side finished the half with a spell of possession but found the visiting defence difficult to penetrate.
Just after the restart
Bodipo came close with a header that former Arsenal keeper
Alex Manninger managed to beat away and as the Santander striker sought to pounce on the rebound
Roger made a superb block to deny the goal. Espanyol manager
Julian Rubio then made a couple of changes to try to tighten his defence. Right back
Xavi Roca was replaced by
Alberto Lopo and the experienced Brazilian international
Júnior Baiano came into defence in place of
Cyril Domoraud. At the same time
Manuel Preciado withdrew the ineffective
Yossi Benayoun and introduced
Manuel Antonio Longo into the fray. The Santander substitution proved to be the most effective as, within minutes of his arrival on the pitch,
Longo went off on an exquisite run that ended with a near post cross for
Bodipo to head home.
Clearly feeling that two goals were enough to ensure victory, the visitors started to defend deep and allowed Espanyol to see more of the ball. The turning point came when
Parrado was brought down in the area by
Ceballos and the Santander captain received his marching orders. The dangerous
Regueiro was withdrawn to allow substitute keeper
Borja to come on and his first task was to pick the ball out of the net as
Raúl Tamudo made no mistake from the spot. Five minutes later Santander left back
Vicente halted the determined run of
MartÃ*n Posse with a dangerous two-footed challenge and Espanyol were awarded their second penalty of the game. The young defender was fortunate indeed to escape with just a booking and once again
Tamudo left
Borja helpless as he stroked the ball home.
The home side really had their tails up now and set about their visitors with a vengeance. The excellent
Roger gave Espanyol the lead when he unerringly found the top corner with a beautifully flighted free kick and
Tamudo killed off the game when he rounded off a lovely passing move to complete his hat trick.
