Because Autralia now plays in Asia for international and club level so Australian's will be up for Asian Player of the Year rather than Oceanic. Australia moved to Asia because they wnated to play more regularly aganst a better standard of opposition.

Since it is an award chosen by a panel, and awarded very dubiously by the looks of it, I'm sure they wouldn't choose a winner that would anger a lot of people (assuming people were against it).

Actually I don't see the problem with an Australian winning it, the same as maybe a Kazhakh, Azerbaijani, Israeli or more realistically, a Turkish player winning European Player of the Year, even though their countries are not techinically in Europe geographically.
