Hey all, thanx for letting me join for free!!

I am new to the site, but not too new to PS!

I am trying to create a "Tribal" of a scorpion. Would like it to be black with a silvery outline. Just not sure about how to make one! Can anyone point me in the right direction!? ;\

What I mean by "Tribal" is the picture attached. It is a black design that looks like a dragon. I want to create a Scorpion in that "Tribal" mode. I already created the starburst to go behind it -- now I need to learn how to create a "Tribal"!

That's like asking how to get to Carnagie Hall.
Practice.
Tribal design is a form of styling that cannot be broken down to a precise, "trace by number" thing. You have to have some drawing skills, and you have to have an "eye."

The simplest version you could start with would be to draw outlines of the major shape forms making up your scorpion, and then filling those outlines with your version of tribal stylizing, be it sharp angled blades or arrow head shapes with or without exaggerated/swirling points.

Do a web search and look for tribal designs that inspire you, but don't just take someone else's works.

Hi mflintjer,

I'd suggest that you could come close using Styles. Here's an example (I didn't bother with the radient light burst) I made using a vector scorpion from Illustrator, originally black and white, and imported into PS where the black and silver style found in Sue's Styles #7 was applied and then modified to taste (scaled and that sort of thing) The styles are a free download found here...

To reply to MsOz -- that's exactly what I am trying to do MAKE MY OWN!! I don't want to use someone elses work to make something that I want to call my own. I am too creative for that !

One more question to all, Is there a site that has different autoshapes as a download -- or do I just need to experiment with PS for right now? If there are more autoshapes out there, they could make this go quicker -- but if not, then oh well!

One more thing, How do you do vectoring (I know it can be very detailed, please just give me a quick run-doan on it)?

I have been reading about it, but don't uderstand exactly how it works!!

You said earlier that you're too creative and that you want to make everything yourself. Well there you go, this is a great opportunity to learn more about vectors. Vectors are very useful, it takes a bit of practice in the beginning, but with the right tutorials you'll get the hang of them in no-time. Also make sure that you learn the different pen tool shortcuts, they make life a lot easier!

Actually, [/b]JoeD[/b] is right on in his suggestion that this is a great opportunity for starting to learn the pen tool. If you do a Google search for 'Photoshop pen tool tutorial' you will find many great resources. For your immediate scorpion needs, I've made three different custom shapes of scorpions which you can download and add to your shape library and then load them to use with the custom shape tool. Once you have drawn out a shape it can be transformed or you can use the arrow tools to select paths and, with the direct selection tool you can begin to drag points and change the shapes (Even that will have a learning curve but much less than drawing them from scratch. )
