Following the collapse of the New Zealand Knights after their brief, unsuccessful time in the Hyundai A-League, Football Federation Australia announced that the team’s replacement in the competition would be the similarly New Zealand based, Wellington Phoenix.

However, an unexpected last minute bid from Tasmania – backed by the island’s own Princess Mary and her fellow Danish Royals – has seen the emergence of Hobart Gold FC.

The Gold have been signed on rather than the Phoenix as the FFA looks to move away from footballing connections with New Zealand and Oceania and onwards into Asia.

The financial backing provided by Prince Frederick has gone towards a new 40,000 all-seater, state-of-the-art stadium in Hobart and has contracted the finest in Danish and Australian backroom staff to the club.

With a population of over 250k in the city and 550k on Tasmania, the deal brings the first top-class national level sports club to a hungry, action-starved public.

All that is left to do is fill the 20 man squad and begin this new Crown Jewel (had to!!) of Australian sport’s journey to national and continental glory.
