Challenge: Restoring Reggina's Tarnished Reputation In Football
Sponsored by Ronseal, does exactly what it says on the tin
The Aims
The Long Term Aim
Restore this fallen club’s reputation in Italian football and further expand it with continued success both domestically and on the European stage. Reggina Calcio will rise again, stronger than before.
The Short Term Aims
Year One: Survival
Easy? Think again. As you will realise Reggina have the distinct disadvantage of starting on -15 points (possibly -11 if you are fully patched but I will be talking as though it’s -15 as it is on my game) which puts you effectively 12 points away from survival at the start of the season. With the other clubs embroiled in this situation being strong clubs such as AC Milan and Lazio, it really is effectively the full 15. So as it stands you have 38 games to ensure your survival in the top tier of Italian football, a status that is surely needed to rebuild the reputation of this club.
Year Two: Consolidation
A simple consolidation season in Serie A. With your status as a top tier club now under less threat and the club starting on an equal footing it is perhaps time some players were less hesitant to join the club. With some shrewd signings using your limited finances a mid-table position should be the aim to further improve the reputation of the club. Any higher positions would be a bonus. With the fans expectations raising a good domestic cup run will be required.
Year Three: Europe
It’s time to continue building on last year’s consolidation season with a good strong push at qualifying for European football, although the only realistic aim can be the UEFA Cup at this stage. Domestic cups are taking on more importance now as you aim for European qualification in any way possible, and concentrating on these could well be a viable alternative route. Either way, it’s expected for you to perform better than ever before on both domestic fronts.
Year Four: Title Challenge
Although not considered real challengers by the majority, the European competition will lure stronger, better players to your club. The right signings will see a challenge mounted for the title, although not many inside or outside the club will be expecting to win it this year. Either way the Champions League is a strong possibility and what you should be aiming for. Domestic cup competitions are near forgotten this season as the club’s first European outing begins. A solid show in the UEFA Cup with quarter finals being the least you should aim for.
Year Five: Italian Champions
This is the peak of the club’s meteoric rise to the top. Last year’s challenge at the title has the media speculating and Champions League football is providing temptation for another class of player, another step up. A serious title challenge has to be supported by money earned in previous seasons and the fans and chairman expect. The Champions League may be one step too far for the club at the moment, but going out with a whimper will not impress anybody. Qualification for the cash cow that is the first round is a must.
The Rules
Game Rules
Not following the timescale above is in no way a failure of the challenge. Take as long as you require or win the Champions League in two seasons if you can do so fairly.
Load a game using any officially patched version of Football Manager 2007, using only official databases provided with the game or with the 7.0.2 patch. The only leagues stipulation is that all Italian leagues must be loaded. Any further leagues are up to you, as is loading additional players, to avoid hampering those who prefer to scout far and wide and their PC allows them such luxuries.
You must add yourself as manager of Reggina at the beginning of the Italian 2006 season. Multiple managers in the game are not permitted.
You must manage Reggina for the duration of the challenge. Any offers for international positions can be accepted at your whim.
No feeder/parent club restrictions are in place. No official rules on who you can sign are in place although it would be considered more of a challenge if you avoided the well known wonderkids that will join any club and sign only those you can attain a scout report for.
Reggina are already in enough trouble for cheating and as such any external utilities are banned for fear of an unnecessary backlash. This includes scouting utilities, save game editors and any other software that can give you an advantage in the playing of the game. Save game cleaners or other such utilities that only increase the enjoyability of playing the game will not be frowned upon.
Thread Rules
Player naming is allowed and encouraged if it enhances your updates.
Tactical discussion is allowed and encouraged if it enhances your updates.
Screenshots or videos are encouraged to provide further enjoyment to the reading of progress.
All progress should be documented in this thread, the more often the better, as long as the updates are kept meaningful. Informal banter or just celebration of individual results is also encouraged. No matter how poorly you perform, even if you commit the atrocity of dropping to Serie B first season I, and others, will still enjoy reading your updates.
At the end of the season a screenshot or a ‘print screen’ in text file format of the league table should be posted, alongside any reviews you wish to post of seasonal performances, awards and transfers.
(NB: Rules shamelessly stolen and adapted from various other challenge threads)
I personally am playing the game on Football Manager 2007 patched to 7.0.2 but using the original database provided with the game. I hope people will take on this tough challenge. Good luck and have fun

I chose Automatic. No idea what that does but I assumed it sets you at a level similar to the club you take over. I recommend that but if you started as something else already then there's no worries.

I did start it earlier on the 7.0.2, with automatic .
Might not get much time to play atm though with exams and all coming up.

Helveg brought in to provide some stability and experience in a back line, something which I hoped to compound with the loan signing of Alessandro Costacurta but he declined. Bischoff provides some competition in a sparse defensive midfield area for the club and Gaitan has just been a revelation. Scoring 6 in 5 games in pre-season with 2 man of the match awards to go alongside that.
So I've made some changes, brought the club around to my way of thinking slightly and go into the first season confident of survival. The Italian Cup 1st Qualifying Round against Pro Vasto the first game on the agenda.

Pre-season was a wash out but beat Pro Vasto 2-0 in the first qualifing round of the Coppa Italia and then turned Calgiari over 2-0 away in the second qualifing round.
I'm optimistic for the future.

I loaded Italian leagues, English Championship and above and Spanish Liga BBVA and above and no additional players (crap PC)
This update will probably embroil Reggina in more cup fixing problems with hot and cold balls having read DFJ's
Italian Cup

Pro Vasto 0 - 4 Reggina - First Qualifying RoundCagliari 0 - 2 Reggina - Second Qualifying RoundSiena 2 - 0 Reggina - Third Qualifying Round

So a good start in the cup, although I didn't plan to do well as such, then I came up against Siena and Enrico Chiesa who destroyed me. A strong start in the league also, convincingly drawing away from home. Then three 1-0 losses on the bounce, the latter two being decided by goals from further than 30 yards out.
A superb win against Inter had me dancing around the room. They went down to 10 men in the 88th minute and 9 men in the 90th but I had already won the game by then. Then I somehow lose to Livorno, Lucarelli scoring twice for them which is a blow as I fully expect them to be struggling to stay up this season.
