Leiden, a small city in South Holland had registered and put into the Dutch lower leagues in the year 2003. The team consisted of locale players on a part time contract and enjoyed huge succes being promoted 2 years in a row into the Dutch First Division and finished a place of promotion in its 3rd season.

On the 15th of June 2006 it was announced that ADO Den Haag has run into serious debt and into administration and will not be able to compete so there for Leiden FC has been promoted to fill the remaining spot in the Dutch Premier League.

The part time players for Leiden FC were too old and as they already have careers offering them more money, they cannot continue to represent their city.

On the 20th of June a business man, Markus van Gaal, who was born in Leiden bought into the club and gained full control and decided to invest in the best young talent in Europe.
