Season 2009/10 Review
Once more, there were few transfers into the San Marinese clubs, and no money was spent. It seems that the clubs are happy with their current squads of talented local youngsters and do not feel the need to splash out on foreigners. Some high profile players such as Juan Pablo Sorin, John Carew and Santiago Canizares have joined clubs on free transfers. It seems that San Marino is becoming like Qatar – a country where players move to wind down their careers.
The San Marinese players who have moved abroad are doing OK, but none have really set the heather alight yet.
Emiliano Gigli played 16 times for Bologna in Serie A with an average of 6.63
Nicolo Gentile joined Osasuna in January and played 6 times, scoring 1 goal with an average of 6.00.
Roberto Prisco played made only 3 substitute appearances for Roma and was pretty poor – his average was 5.33
Leonardo Ottaviano played 22 times in Serie A for Atalanta but his average was only 6.05.
A couple of players have moved to AC Milan for huge fees, and it appears that the world is now taking note of the quality of San Marinese talent, with Chelsea, Man Utd, Betis and Milan interested in a number of players.
The teams have kept their places on the rich list, which is unsurprising given that they’ve spent no money
Rich List
4 teams represented San Marino in the UEFA Cup this season – 3 normal qualifiers plus the holders Folgore.
Murata underachieved badly, not even reaching the group stage after losing to Aberdeen on away goals.
Murata's UEFA Cup Run
Tre Fiori’s European debut was equally disappointing, they fell at the same stage after crumbling away to Galatasaray.
Tre Fiori's UEFA Cup Run
Folgore faced Milan in the European Super Cup at the start of the season, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
But their attempt to defend their UEFA Cup title started well and Celtic, Valencia and Newcastle were dispatched with ease in the knock-out stages. However, in the semi-final, Deportivo proved too strong.
Folgore's UEFA Cup Run
Pennarossa knocked out Sporting Lisbon, Villareal, Liverpool and Palermo to reach the final, but were beaten after extra time by Deportivo.
Pennarossa's UEFA Cup Run UEFA Cup Final
The performances of Folgore and Pennarossa this season have elevated San Marino to the giddy heights of 1st place on the coefficients table – however there will be no further increase in the number of European places.
National Coefficients
There are also now 2 San Marinese clubs in the top 20 of the UEFA club coefficient table. Folgore’s 2 consecutive good runs have helped them to leapfrog Tre Penne into 16th, while their compatriots have dropped to 20th as a result of not playing in Europe this year.
Club Coefficients
On the international front, San Marino have still failed to find the back of the net and still have not sacked Giampaolo Mazza – who must possibly be the worst manager in history. Any idiot should be able to have success with such talented players – but this guy appears to be the exception.
They are now out of the top 200 in the world and there are only 5 countries worse than them. With the players at their disposal, they should definitely be in the top 50 and pushing for qualification to major events.
