Season 08/09 Review
In terms of transfers, this was a quiet season. Not one of the clubs spent a penny in transfer fees, and once more there were lots of swap deals between the clubs which is rather unusual. Ronaldo (the Brazilian one) joined Tre Penne and scored 4 goals in 4 appearances but will retire less than a year after joining, at the age of 33. Surprisingly he did not play in any European games despite still having reasonable stats. Players are tending to retire earlier than usual (at the age of 32 or 33), possibly due to the lack of ‘real’ games.
Neither of the players who retired last year stayed on as staff members – but surprisingly, the reputation of the majority of the San Marinese staff at the clubs is World Class and their stats are excellent. This must be linked to the country’s reputation unless San Marino is in fact home to a secret UEFA coaching base. I set my nationality to San Marinese, and I have a Continental reputation despite having never had a job and having my past experience set as Automatic. I have also been linked with major jobs such as Valencia.
The diaspora of San Marinese talents has begun, with 4 players moving to Italy. However nobody has yet dared to travel further afield. Of those who have moved, only 18 year-old Pietro Meroni has played regularly at Empoli in Serie B. Despite this, he is languishing in the San Marino U19s and is uncapped.
On the rich list the clubs have dropped below Real Madrid again but hold on to spots 3-17.
Rich List
This year there were 2 UEFA Cup representatives and both were extremely successful.
Tre Penne reached the semi-finals for the second consecutive year, but lost out to Real Betis. However they overcame clubs such as Sevilla, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Sampdoria to get there.
Tre Penne's UEFA Cup Run
Folgore did even better than their compatriots and made it all the way to the final, managing to succeed where Tre Penne failed by beating Real Betis. Amazingly, they won the UEFA Cup the first time they entered it. And they did it the hard way, beating Marseille, PSG and Werder Bremen in the knock-out stages.
Folgore's UEFA Cup Run UEFA Cup Final
Tre Penne’s second semi-final in a row propelled them to the giddy heights of 17th in the UEFA club coefficients, while San Marino climbed to 6th on the country list. I would imagine it will be difficult to break into the “Big 5” though.
As Jimbokav has pointed out, there is still no CL spot for a San Marinese club, despite the country deserving 3 places.
Club Coefficients National Coefficients
The national team has unbelievably still not scored a single goal, despite having some of the hottest talents in Europe. Despite having a World Class manager for the U21s and the U19s, the national team has a manager with a regional reputation and awful stats, so that perhaps explains it.
They’re now 196th in the World Rankings, down another place. Will they ever get rid of the rubbish manager for someone better?

In other news, an average Bolton team, with Sammy Lee as manager won the Premiership. This was despite basically having the same squad as they do IRL.
