CMS Awards 2004 – Ballot paper/voting instructions

Dear CMSer,

Slightly later than normal, we finally get our annual CMS Awards process underway now. These will be the last CMS awards, as the forum’s undergone the changeover to FMS.
Like in the past couple of years, there will be two rounds of voting: one, the first, is a nomination round in which anything on the eligibility list may win your vote, followed by a second round in which roughly the top 4 (may vary per category depending on the number of candidates and votes cast) in every category feature. For this second round, all scores are reset to zero.
As per the change to the system in 2003, the following restrictions are in place to prevent repeat winners from effectively taking a subscription on any given award:
·Previous winners of Story of the Year cannot enter this or future CMS Awards again
·Stories that won a geographical subcategory or other “smaller” award cannot enter the “minor” categories again, but are eligible for outright Story of the Year
·Automatic Hall of Fame qualification for the Story of the Year is scrapped, leaving continuing long-term stories with something to strive for.
·The above does not disqualify an author from running for Writer of the Year, Character of the Year, or similar awards, even if he/she only has one long-term story going.

Before then, however, you’re advised to check out the candidates, so you have an extra bit of time to make up your mind.


As soon as the first round of voting is over, all eligible and claimed votes will be counted, to provide the top-4 in each category (in alphabetical order, as no actual number of votes will be revealed after the first round). Then, on Thursday 30 December, second round voting gets underway. Everyone who voted in the first round, plus those registering late (if approved by the forum moderators) will get to vote again, making their final choice out of the nominations in every category. This second round voting ends midday GMT, Friday 7 January.

The Awards Ceremony itself will then be held on the forum on the 8th or 9th, the exact date TBC.

There are just a few things to keep in mind when voting:

·Send your votes to raptor@home.nl only! This year, yours truly will do the counting, as I’m not in the running for any story awards anyway. After you have cast your vote in either round, you’ll have to claim your vote (not the actual choices you’ve made obviously) in this thread on the forum. Any unclaimed votes will not be counted.
·The CMS Index was last updated on Sunday 19 December 2004. Stories based on FM2005. regardless of when they were started, automatically flow over to 2005, as these are the final CMS Awards.
·You don’t have to vote in every category if you don’t want to.
·In line with CMS tradition no-one can vote for himself.
·The lists below contain all threads classed as Stories from the year 2004. During board cleanups this year, those which never got off the ground were deleted. They are still displayed in the Index, as they are still eligible for Best Title and similar awards. Any story without a link in the Index is no longer present on either CMS or cmstories.net though.

Story of the Year

Which story was the best of the bunch in 2004? Any story in any of the categories below is eligible.

Writer of the Year

The author of your pick for Story of the Year is not necessarily the same as your nomination for Writer of the Year. Someone experimenting with different styles, writing a few good stories which aren’t considered good enough for Story of the Year, may yet be a better writer. Then, it’s equally conceivable the author of Story of the Year is simply the best in your opinion. Use the CMS Index by author to see the broad range of writers this year.

Funniest Writer

Who was the funniest writer in 2004? Since there is no award for Funniest Story, you’ll have to rely on memory or accidentally stumbling across your type of humour in a story. There are many funny people on CMS, but who does it consistently enough to win your vote?

Best Newcomer

Have a look at the entry list to determine who, in your opinion, has been the most impressive new writer in 2004.

Best Story Character

As CMS slowly moves away from “match report stories”, off-the-field storylines develop in many stories. While there isn’t a definitive list of story characters, you will probably know many from the stories you’ve read. And now, you get to nominate the one you like most.

CMSer of the Year

Formerly known as User of the Year, this award goes to the person judged to have made the biggest contribution to the CMS community over the course of the year. That means your nomination will be based on a mix of story writing, helping/encouraging others, participation in the story ideas and off topic threads, sorting out meetups or other community-enhancing efforts. As a consequence, this is NOT the same as writer of the year. Please note that while moderators and helpers are as much CMSers as the rest of the forum, actual moderating-related community work MUST be ignored when nominating people in this category. This award is far too prestigious to create anything but a level playing field.


MISCELLANIOUS OVERALL AWARDS


Most Underrated Writer

The Unsung Hero award. On an ever-growing CMS, it’s increasingly likely a good writer will take ages to get the audience his writing warrants. This is your chance to nominate one of them for their place in the spotlight. Since last year, you cannot nominate anyone in this category if you nominated him in another one! Anyone in the running for an award at the Second Round Voting stage, or a previous Award winner, automatically becomes ineligible for this award.

Most Missed CMSer

Like Best Newcomer, check out the special eligibility list for this award, where we decide which of the people writing a story in 2003 but not this year, is most sorely missed.

Best Story Title

Regardless of the story’s content, which title did you like most?

Best Story Idea

Like best title, the story content doesn’t matter a great deal in picking your choice here. This award is about which story had the best idea behind it. You may interpret this as “best scenario idea”, or as “most original story angle”, whatever “Best Story Idea” covers in your opinion.

Best Challenge

Every four months, CMS picked an official challenge for that period. Now, at the end of the year, we’ll decide which of them was the best of the year. You don’t need to nominate any of them in the first round of voting, as there are only three. All of them automatically enter the second and final round of voting.

Perseverance Award

Another one in the unsung heroes category. Who deserves credit for sticking at their story, even it’s for a small audience? For those who realise what CMS really is about: writing stories because you want to/like it. This one is different from the Most Underrated Writer award in that the other one is for the best writer not to be spotted by the masses, whereas this award can be won by simply sticking at something, at all cost.


SUB-CATEGORIES

Just about every story (save for a few which are written from an overview angle, aren’t really CM stories but allowed regardless, or those abandoned before it became clear which league/club they were based on) fits into one of the below sub-categories. They were incepted to create a balance between number of awards up for grabs (to give a higher number of writers the credit they deserve) and quality of each individual award. For three years now, we’ve had more or less the same structure, though depending on the number of entries, some might be merged on a year-by-year basis.

Best Celtic Story (WAL/IRL/NI)
Best Western European Story (NED/BEL/FRA/GER/SUI)
Best Southern European Story (POR/SPA/ITA/GRE)
Best Rest of Europe Story (formerly known as best Northern/Eastern European Story

Best Rest of the World Story

For 2004, The Americas will be part of the Rest of the World category. It’s not the first time they’ve been pooled together, and hopefully 2005 will see this interesting category pick up a bit.


Finally, there are five other sub-categories not based on geographic regions…

Best Short Story

Any complete story which has five posts or less. One of the favourite genres on CMS.

Best Fantasy/Super League Story

Essentially two categories in one, though they are linked through the fact that whatever the scenario of the story is, it’s unlikely to happen any time soon. This category contains stories on Super League patches such as the Omega World League, or the European Super League one. Yet it also features stories on CMS XIs or other board teams such as those available in the OTF patches. For the latter type of stories, the deciding factor in whether a story qualifies as a normal English story or a fantasy one is basically the number of fictional players. If you include yourself as an up-and-coming star player, then it would still qualify as an English/Scottish/whatever story. If you include an entire team of friends/relatives, then it most definitely is fantasy.

Sadly, for 2004, there were too few entries to hand out an award in this category.

Best Challenge Story

Challenge stories require a different writing style, as they’re usually long-winded missions which need to be completed in a relatively short period of time. Consequently, detail levels will be lower in most cases, and they’re hard to compare to slower running games. Therefore, they have been given their own category, regardless of geographical location (most of them would fall under the Journeyman category anyway).

Best International Management Story

Self-explanatory. Stories on managing international sides.

Best Journeyman Story

For those stories not restricted to one geographical area. These are often multi-season stories, as it takes a while to change clubs and countries.

Best Multiplayer Story

Same story as last year: somehow, it doesn’t generate enough interest, and we’d rather not hand out an award at all that to make it a meaningless one.
