Later that afternoon, back with Katie and the kids at her uncle and aunt, the peace agreement as printed in the Irish News is discussed.
PO'K So uncle Liam, the Unionists get control over Antrim and can implement their own laws there?
LO'K That's right Patrick. As long as they don't clash with the constitution that is.
PO'K That's the end of a federal Ireland with provincial parliaments then I hope?
KF That was never going to happen. They were discussing it even back when I was in the Dail. The other provinces never wanted it.
MF What's the status of Belfast now then?
LO'K As of now, it's part of Co. Down. That ensures a massive unionist majority in Antrim.
MO'K We wouldn't want Belfast to be part of Antrim anymore either. Not now that they'll have their own police force.
KF What?! Who allowed them that?!
LO'K It was a vital concession. Had to be made, otherwise there wouldn't have been a deal. In fact, they wanted their own army as well, but that was rejected.
PO'K They HAVE their own army... It's called UDA and LLM.
MF Well, not anymore if the war really is over.
KF Don't be naive Mark, they won't hand over any weapons. No one will.
LO'K No one has to. This time, decommissioning wasn't part of the agreement.
PO'K Really? So this country finally learns from its previous mistakes?
MF If the war IS over they won't
have to use those weapons anyway, so they'll be beyond use. Who cares who keeps them? If things go wrong again, they'd get new ones without any problem whatsover. Goes for both sides.
PO'K You got that much right!
KF So, will there be any nationalist representation in the Co. Antrim council?
MO'K Unlikely. They'll use the first-past-the-post system, which will ensure a minimum of nationalist interference in their affairs. But it's a small price to pay for peace.
PO'K They shouldn't have been granted that much.
LO'K Well, the loyalist army wasn't beaten, so they were in a very strong bargaining position. Played the game really well, with all sort of demands they could drop cos they didn't really seek them after all.
MO'K The government realised that soon enough though. Just let them have some of those smaller demands. Did you know Ireland's now part of the Commonwealth?
PO'K Are you serious aunt Mary?
MO'K Dead serious Patrick.
PO'K That wouldn't be the Commonwealth that acknowledges His Majesty King Charles III as it's head?
LO'K The one and only. Some people are very unhappy about that, but...
KF ... but at the end of the day, it's just a title. It means nothing. England doesn't have a say here Patrick.
PO'K So what other "compromises" were made?
LO'K Oh, a few minor things. Three-quarters of any international aid Ireland receives goes to rebuilding Ulster, equally shared between Antrim and the rest of the province.
MF That's a bit unfair. Belfast looks more damaged than any other place. It could do with most money.
LO'K Unionist Co. Antrim will get an entire new capital though, to be built from scratch. That'll cost a lot of money too.
MF Is that the one on Lough Neagh they had planned?
MO'K Yes. They wanted to call it New Belfast at first, but decided to name it Doagh, after the nearby village that was completely destroyed by the IRA two years ago. It'll be the seat of their mini-government.
LO'K And then there's a few nationwide appointments and changes. Some laws will be modified, if the soon-to-be-elected Dail passes them anyway. And the protestant community gets an extra judge on the Supreme Court too.
PO'K Right, after all that, what's in it for us?
MF Peace, by the looks of it.
PO'K And a 31-county Republic.
LO'K Still 32 Patrick... Just one with far-reaching autonomy.
PO'K Exactly. Did our comrades die for that?
KF They died for an independent and united Ireland. We have that now, and maybe this really was the final chapter in this bloody history.
PO'K How long do you think this peace will last? Someone will want to take away their ridiculous privileges, or maybe they'll want all of Ulster back first.
KF We'll see. Just be glad it's over for now.
PO'K Sis, what happened to you lately?! Until recently, you would never have accepted this!
KF Patrick, we've spent THREE YEARS away from home, because of a stupid conflict that's raged for longer than anyone cares to remember! I'm fed up with it. I want my kids to grow up in a peaceful country!
PO'K One in which WE do all the compromising.
LO'K I know how you feel Patrick, but something had to give. This way, we all get a new chance. Oh, by the way, Orange Order marches down catholic roads are a thing of the past now, also part of the agreement.
PO'K Well, at least there was SOMETHING in it for us.

How long did they take to complete this surrender? Three minutes?
LO'K The final deal was struck in less than a week. You were still preparing for a return to a country at war when we spoke on the phone.
MF Maybe a quick deal is good for a change. You know what happened to those other agreements. They failed, despite years of negotiating. At least if this one fails, it won't have wasted much time...
It's clear Patrick is the least happy of the family with the peace agreement, but like the rest of the country, he'll have to play his part in making it work. It's Ireland's best chance of peace in nearly a century...
