Sadly, I'm still thinking about that Communist Challenge, so much so that I was thinking about in the shower this morn. And I was thinking this :

Stage 1 : Take lower level Russian team, win support for the revolution by gaining promotion to Premier League.

Stage 2 : Make your move to the capital, taking over one of the Moscow teams, winning the title with them to cement your control. Then I think the challenge should diverge.

Stage 3, option A : Purge your team of the 3/4 of it's squad and staff, before defeating one of the bourgeoisie teams of the Imperialistic West(from France, Germany, Spain, Italy or England) in the knockout rounds of the Champion's League.

Stage 3, option B : Alas, the people's revolution has devolved into a paroxysm of violence and tyranny. Defect to Germany to start life over. Take two russians with you and win a trophy for your new side, doesn't matter which one - as long as it's shiny and can be melted down for investment capital.

Stage 4, Option A : Now is the time to spread the revolution. Move to any eastern european league with two of your loyal comrades and lead a squad to a glorious triumph over on of the aforementioned western teams in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup or Champion's League. Maybe the 3rd qualifying section of the CL could count too.

Stage 4, Option B : Stop the spread of Communism. Move into Eastern Europe, taking with you a pair of loyal russians(doesn't matter if they're the same ones from the last stage or not, as long as they like making money). Simply advance further in Europe than any Russian team, or any team with a Russian in it(not sure about this one).

Stage 5, Option A : Now is the time to make your boldest move. Take a team in Germany, and bringing two Russians with you, lead the proletariat from around Europe to glory in the Champion's League, winning the final with a team that has at least two russians and one player from every scoutable region of Europe.

Stage 5, Option B : Now, you must attack the heart of the beast. Move to any Russian team and take them to Champion's League glory, making sure to start at least one player from each scoutable region in Europe in the final.

Retire, having either brought a glorious People's Revolution to the entire continent - or having proved the supremacy of unfettered capitalism over communism.

Still seems repetitive to me, not sure what can be done about that.

The Ancient History Challenge

Two Routes - Roman / Greek Empire

Name yourself as one of the great emperors from one of these archaic eras.

If a Roman, the starting point is clearly at somewhere like Roma, or Lazio, though my personal preference would be Napoli especially as they're now down at the bottom end of the spectrum. With this path you have to build up a force fit to rule the globe or as far as you can take. For pedantry's sake none of your star players can be foreigners - as they're somewhat lesser mortals.

Octavian or as he became known, Augustus aside from revolutionising the infrastructure of the city was also known for his penchant for conquering nearby provinces so a quick bashing of neighbouring countries could be achieved before the final leg of the career - ie returning to Rome / Italy and maintaining domestic success / winning the WC with Italy.

Caesar - Augustus' dad is obviously more well known but just as apt - but beware the revolt from within as the Republic is on it's last feet...

oh hang on the story could start after Caesar's assasination and you have to correct the disturbing domestic troubles first before buggering off elsewhere.

Whilst I am quite blatantly just writing as I'm thinking, I reckon this is definitely duable. If it's a little easy it could be comibined with the Greek challenge as Rome / Carthage did end up giving the Grecians a bit of a walloping.

From the Greek POV there's quite obviously Alexander the Great's numerous conquests, but there is also too the Peloponnesian and Persian Wars of the 4th/5th BC where the Greeks had to fend off the fecking Persians. Pericles was a notable politician leader of the time whilst Thucydides became an author of the war - he wrote loads of crap about it. Erm ok maybe not that bit, but the Alexander bit's always possible.

Erm. Roman seems easier. I'll think of some stages in a minute.

How do people feel about a challenge based on a downloadable update such as a Superleague or something similar? I have a game running where I have put the Old Firm in the Premiership - does this sound interesting?

it's possible - with the historical elements of some of the challenges listed etc it could be very useful for aiding the practicalities of it.

the major problem with using an update is it limits the versions you can play the challenge on.

True - and it needs the participants to do a big download before they start - can be a problem for dial-up folks.

Hello,

This is my idea that I came up with a while ago, but didn't use in the last challenge. I haven't looked at it in a while so if there are typos or logic issues please give me any suggestions.

Thanks

FootballMania Challenge

Phase I – Learning about Football
Just as the Beatles started off in small clubs you need to start with a small club. Start off with any English Conference North or South (preferable one that is around Liverpool, but this is not required). This phase is completed when you have taken your team of choice to the Second Division.

Phase II – Getting Experience in Germany
After learning your trade in England it is time to work abroad. Apply for any available job in the lowest German division. After taking a job in Germany take that team to the top German division and win at least one trophy in Germany.

Phase III – Your Grand Return
Once you take your German team you have proven that you are a good manager…in Germany. Now is the time to return to England and take a team to the top. Take any 2nd division team to the EPL. In order to complete this phase ONE of these trophies must be won, the EPL, FA Cup or the CL. Once ANY of them are won then this phase is complete. You may continue to coach until you receive a job in the MLS to start the next phase but any cups/leagues won do NOT count for any other phase.

Phase IV – A New Continent
Just as the Beatles made it huge in America you must do the same. Go to the MLS and apply for any vacant job. Once a coach in the MLS you must win ALL available cups/leagues to complete this phase. The Cup/Leagues you must win are the following: MLS Cup, Open Cup, and the CONCACAF Champions Cup. These do NOT need to be done in the same season. Once completed this phase is done.

Phase V – A Second Grand Return

Again you return to England as a conquering hero. You will need to be hired by an EPL team, but the requirements to finish this phase are the same as in Phase III. Once you win either the EPL, FA Cup, or the CL this phase is complete. You may continue to manage while waiting for a job opening in the next phase, but awards will not count to the challenge.

Phase VI – Your Spiritual Awaking

After your return to England you realize that life is not all about winning trophies. You must be hired by a team in the Indian National Football League. You must take this team and win all available Cups. These are: Durand Cup, Federation Cup, National Football League, and the AFC Champions League. These do not have to be won in the same season. After winning your last trophy in India then you can start looking for a job in England again. You can continue to coach in India while waiting for a job in England to open up.

Phase VII - The Finale

This is it. Your long journey is over. The final phase consists of the following. You must take over a team in England (any team/any division) and you must win the following trophies: the FA Cup, Champions League, and the EPL. Only a couple requirements:
1)You must win at least two of the trophies in one season.
2)You must have one player from each country that you managed in and each player must play in at least half your games during the season.

If you can complete the challenge then you have won Continental Cups on three different continents and you can retire as the greatest manager of all time. Just as the Beatles are the greatest band of all time .

You wouldn't really need to download anything to run a challenge with a "fantasy" (or whatever) league structure so long as people have the CM editor. It's very easy to switch Rangers/Celtic to the English leagues and player transfer updates aren't really important.
