The October Round-Up
Plymouth Argyle Weise - Zanetti, Sorin(c), Squillaci, King – Kleberson – Taddei, Ifill, Jankulowski – Bellamy – Gudjohnsen
Birmingham City Taylor – Melchiot, Taylor, van Burik, Upson – Ashley, Greening, Savage(c), Carter – Heskey, Heath
Beginning the month late after an international break, Mike Rogerson’s
Plymouth Argyle looked refreshed and recharged. With the 3-0 defeat by
Chelsea still fresh in the mind,
The Pilgrims awaited the arrival of
Birmingham City with the kind of anticipation often demonstrated by a team that feels it has something to prove.
Argyle began the game in menacing fashion, looking to push the visitors back at every opportunity. It took just seven minutes for unsettled striker
Eidur Gudjohnsen to crash in a
Craig Bellamy lay-off. With
Sebastien Squillaci heading in a
Marek Jankulowski corner and
Paul Ifill adding a deflected third just before the break the result was little in doubt.
Birmingham substitute
Ibrahim Affelay pulled a goal back on full time but
Plymouth had been to good for the Blues.

Having been visited by the Blue half of Birmingham,
Plymouth Argyle had to travel to the Claret quarter. With
Craig Bellamy nursing a bruised head following a hefty
Robbie Savage challenge in the previous game, out-of-favour Uruguayan
Horacio Peralta was given the chance to prove himself once more to
Mike Rogerson.
The Greens began the game well but were unable to convert possession into goals in a first half that saw
Juan Pablo Angel give the home side the lead against the run of play. The visitors kept battling away however, and were rewarded on the hour when
Peralta stole in to chip the home keeper.
The Pilgrims push for a winner looked in vain until
Paul Ifill was felled in the box by
Marcus Mulcahy in the final minute.
Peralta lashed the ball home to give his side the points and then tapped in an
Eidur Gudjohnsen cross to complete his hat-trick as
Villa searched for an equaliser.

Having soundly beaten
West Bromwich Albion in the league only weeks before,
Mike Rogerson took his side to the Midlands confident that
Plymouth Argyle would go into the hat for the 4th Round of the League Cup that evening. With
Sebastien Squillaci and
Juan Pablo Sorin ruled out through injury,
Rogerson was forced to bring in fans’ favourite
Tony Capaldi at full back while
Joleon Lescott filled the centre back position.
Twelve minutes into the match Nicky Colgan spilled a
Marek Jankulowski shot and
Javier Zanetti swept in the rebound. The visitors had started well and the early goal was well-deserved. It took
Argyle over an hour to kill the game off however, as
Rogerson had to rely on late goals from a resurgent
Horacio Peralta and
Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Plymouth Argyle played
Nottingham Forest in the televised Sunday game at
Home Park in
The Pilgrims last game of a promising October.
Forest, promoted with
Argyle last season, had failed to add sufficiently to their squad and were rooted to the foot of the table with a single win from the opening eleven games.
Mike Rogerson’s side predictably started the better of the two teams, but it took until nearly half time for
The Greens to break the deadlock. Mimoun Azabouagh was adjudged to have jumped unfairly with
Rodrigo Ferrante Taddei and
Kleberson side-footed the resulting spot-kick beyond Russell Hoult. Only four minutes later the Brazilian repeated his penalty success after Michael Dawson had tripped
Horacio Peralta in the box. In the second half
Forest came out of their shells and Wes Morgan pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining, only to see
Kleberson seal his hat-trick with a near post header from a
Marek Jankulowski corner.
