Default how can i......

I have a picture thats round and the canvas is white. I want the white of the canvas to gradually blend into the picture about 10 pixels deep. I tried selecting the canvas and stroking with various amounts of opacity and various modes with no success. How can i do this ! Thanks in advance.

Let me clarify, as i may not have been too clear. I selected a round portion of another picture, then dragged it onto a white canvas and saved it as a JPG. so now i can put a selection line around the round the picture by using the slection tool and just clicking in the white part of the canvas. I may have led you to believe i had a round layer on a white canvas. But i saved that as a jpg and now want to make the white to blend into the picture evenly around the perimeter.

Thanks, but i just tried messing with a layer mask for the first time and couldn't figure out how to do it with that. Still have to make the mask do what i'm trying to do to the pic.

Greetings Dazco,
This is a fairly straight forward effect to accomplish but can be done several ways. Here's one:

1) Select All (cmd/cntrl+a) to select the oval shape of the image.
2) Go to the Channels Palette and create a new Alpha of the selection by clicking on the Mask icon.
3) Select the Alpha Channel and apply a Gaussian Blur of 10%
4) Select the RGB Channel and go back to the Layers Palette.
5) Load the Alpha Channel Selection (Select>Load Selection)
6) Inverse the Selection (cmd/cntrl shift+i) and press delete.

Here's another:
1) Select All
2) Contract the selection by 10 pixels
3) Go to the Quick Mask (press q)
4) Apply a Gaussian blur (abt 10%)
5) Exit the Quick Mask (press q again)
6) Press Delete.

But wait! There's always more... (probably the easiest one):
1) Select All
2) Contract Selection
3) Feather Selection
4) Delete Selection

And there are even MORE ways to do this, but let's not spoil your exploration.

Gort highly recommends that you do these methods to a copy of your original (or at least a copy of the original layer). That way you can make your mistakes with great confidence!

Thanks for the reminder of this simple solution JoeD.
