I've heard a lot of comments on here about how the tactics play a big part in the game. I've said it before, that I don't want to feel like I'm managing a soccer team for real, by having to work so hard to change the tactics and whatnot, that the game should be fun. However, with any sports game you play, you're going to have to mess with things to get your team to play well. So that being said, what is the best way to handle tactics. I've heard people say that you should go game by game depending on the opposition, then I've heard other people say that it's not good to change them all the time, that you should keep the same tactics and let players adjust. So, advice?
I always used to have just one formation I was happy with (it took a bit of time to develop though!) and just use the entire formation for 4 seasons. That seemed to work ok. I do tend to play in the lower leagues so maybe the AI managers aren't very good at spotting ways to beat me and so don't adjust their tactics suit.
In FM08 I've started using 2 tactics, one for home games/'easy' opposition and one for away games/'hard' opposition. it seems to work well, although its a bugger when you forget to change it over between matches and end up with the right players, but scattered over the field in the wrong positions.... ah well, my fault I suppose!
If you are unsure a downloaded tactic might be a good place to start. Then you can tweak it to suit. Thats what I did when I first started playing (all them years ago!) although I find success using my own tactics much more rewarding.
Minor things on the tactics board can be changed every game such as mentality, passing style, etc.
But formation should remain pretty stable but you can adjust to match your playing style in the similar formation, such as 4-4-2 to 4-3-3- for more attacking options.
The minor adjustment should based on opponents though. Playing against bigger team, play more defensive while you should try to smash lower leaguers.
