take a team like Portsmouth. A few seasons back, most premier league sides would have gone there EXPECTING three points. Nowadays, a lot of sides would be MORE than satisfied with a draw against them...
there... reranking in practice.

For me it does need patching, the problems with the shots I am not experiancing just problems with possession/closing down making it so I cant play the way I want to play the game.

good example.reranking is good. makes it hard to play one and same tactic for long time. better play 1 system per year or find an odd version wich is hard for computer to play against and then mod and tweak the counterattack,cf and mentality, tempo of the team.

the match engine is hugely improved from the prepatch version. There are still some problems such as number of chances created (25+ shots when playing 4-5-1) and missed (especially 1v1's and near post efforts going horribly wide from close range) but i am sure this will be sorted out fairly soon. I don not know what these formations are that you are forced to play as i have not looked at any on websites. I have made no signings with everton and have a 6-1-1 league record since the patch using a normal back 4 2CM, 1 CAM, 1LM, johnson as RAM and Yakubu up front. Much of this success has come despite arteta and cahill being injured. Perhaps unrealistic but i am not complaining. Some previous versions were rediculously easy ie taking a team from the 3rd division (elgin) to regular champions league semi-finalists from season 8-12 in fm2006. Back to speaking aboutthis version I have not made drastic changes to tactics just chose the preset individual tactics which suit the player. Team tactics are pretty much what they are at start of game. As had already been mentioned LMA is a less complicated game which people should consider buying if that is what they looking for. I prefer to feel that i have deserved my success through hard work.

I do love how people use "re-ranking" as an excuse without understanding in the slightest what it is, or how it works.
It's an essential part of the game if realism is to be achieved.

I've never even heard of this "reranking" thingy until now and have no idea what it is.

Basically it's a term people use to describe a sudden winter slump or the second season blues.
What it actually is is a game mechanic that sees the AI managers adapting the way they play against your team based on results, reputation etc. It's basically a constant factor, but can take a few games to kick in properly (which is why some users experience an easy season start but then start to struggle - the AI managers were underestimating the challenge you provide at the start, and once its proven that you know what youre doing they begin to take you more seriously).

"Re-ranking" being essential part of the game ?
Then the game is totally fooked, if game engine needs something like that. Unless I understand "re-ranking" totally wrong...which might be the case..
Let's see....
I have played CM from 99/00 upwards.
After my frustration with CM 03/04, I passed CM4 (saved by luck from that one!). Got FM 2007 against my premonition...and discovered that same things that frustrated me were still around...things I call "Vaughan BS". I did vow "never again I'll buy SI game".
So far kept that promise, got FM2008 as gift. Same problems that were rampant in CM03/04 are still around..as rampant.
Sorry to say..but series has not been evolving...after CM03/04 it has just been revolving.
Good luck SI, with this series..you'll need it.

Re-ranking is a myth.
Teams do have an expected result from all matches, but that is based on too many factors for such a phenomenan to be anything but rare.
Obviously the better you play for longer the more teams will fear you, but that is just natural progression, not some overnight change.
