Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Lower League Tactic

Really in need of a lower league tactic, all the ones I try are highly inconsistent? Does anyone have a proven tactic for LLM - Ideally Blue Square North/South?

Hey! Check out my tactic - it's for lower league teams. I was in Spanish devision B4 and won promotion! Hope it helps :-) let me know how you got on with it in the board.

I've been playing as Blyth Spartans. Into my 4th season now my 3rd full season. I think i just about got some tactics that may help.

I started without a job and Blyth were the 1st team to come and get me

They were rock bottom and destined for the drop in Blue Square North.

First thing was to sort out defence. I opted for a 5-3-2. playing defensie and direct. seemed to do the trick and the goals against soon dried up and I scored the odd goal myself.
Avoided relegation so the next season was to build a half-decent team.

I continued with the 5-3-2 but it wasn't working. couldn't score enough goals to really make a good challenge. so changed to a (4-3-3 normal) played a bit attacking, kept directness and changed between wide and narrow play in the game.

It completely revolutionised my team and I started to really push up the league. Unfortunately i hit some inconsistence and left it to little to late so just missed out on a play-off place.

After a bit of fine tuning and some half-decent signings the following seaon was much better and I challenged all seaon long for a playoff place grabbing a much deserved 4th place. made the final but didn't win it.

now with a few more decent players in I'm sure this year will be the one to get out of that division. I'm predicting a division championship challenge.

Lengthy reply...sorry

may work for u..if ur in a bit of bother...let me know how it goes!

In my experiences at lower league have a think about the amount of creative freedom. I think reducing it is quite important.

Also read the recent thread about the D Line, it's really good!

Thanks for the replies, I implemented some of the things you guys suggested but doesnt seem to make any real difference to the consistency of my team. Same old really... its seems to me that unless I get it completely wrong I tend to average 1 win, 1 draw 1 loss every 3 games, or sumtimes just a little better.

But basically what im looking for is either a proven league winning tactic (league 2 or lower - equivalent) or sum pointers on where to start to build a consistent tactic with players of limited ability - although IMO top end of the Blue Square S/N level.

One important question: you are told to win or lose matches? if bids are against you, 5-3-2 is nice. I'm playing it with good success:

-----SC--SC-----
--------^-------
-<MC---MC---MC>-
----------------
LB---DC-^-DC--RB
-------SW-------

Maybe the SW is not good idea, i will try with another CB or DMC. This tactic is performing better with mixed tactics agains similar teams, more direct, high tempo, less width and low DL against better teams. CA of course

mentality 15 for strikers (16-14 if one is slow and strong), 13 for offensive MC, 11 for side MCs, 9 for FBs, 7 for DCs and 5 for sw. CD the same but only 8 to fast striker.

I'm conceding several goals, and scoring quite, with crap and very young players. On the other hand, offensive players get very tired (specially offensive MC) and opponent creates many chances (but scores few of them). With a good pacey striker this tactic devastates (i loan an striker who scored 30 goals in 26 league matches, 90% of 17 yo players)
