Millwall Appoint Little-Known Warren As Boss
Just days after Dennis Wise stepped down as manager of Millwall, chairman Theo Paphitis was quick to appoint young English coach Stuart Warren was filling the position, with Wise remaining a Millwall player. Pressure will be on Warren from the outset as his appointment has baffled fans expectant of a bigger name.
Millwall's FA Cup final appearance last season, and entry in this seaons UEFA, means Warren will have plenty of cash to strengthen his squad with - believed to be in the region of £2m. A handful of players including strikers Braniff and McCammon have been transfer listed in an early assessment of the squad, as has Wise's last signing - goalkeeper Andy Marshall - in a dispute over pay. According to rumours, Warren was dismayed that the newcomer was picking up £20k a week - twice the amount of the next highest payed player.
A number of Millwall's promising youngsters have been made available for loan in a bid to gain them first team experience, while 4 players - Livermore, Roberts, Samba and Sweeney - are seen as key for the clubs future and have been offered lengthy new contracts.
The club have remained tight-lipped regarding possible players joining the squad, though it is thought Warren will pursue an experienced left-back and a right-winger.
Warren will get his first chance to impress and begin his mission to win over the Millwall fans in a friendly against League 1 side, MK Dons. After that, The New Den plays host to the Really Really Good Cup which will see the Lions up against Plymouth, Hartlepool and Preston.
