The Eagle has landed

So as we move in to the darkest nights and coldest days of December, the eagles were flying high at 3rd in the League, but superstitious Manager Paul Rouch did not want to rest on his laurels and trust to the luck of the play offs, so he is determined to push Palace on to claim automatic promotion!!

3rd December 2005

Away to the Foxes and Rouch is unfortunately unavailable and the Assistant manager is left in charge, Leicester scored first through ex-hammer Gavin Williams, Malcolm Christie equalised soon after, but then a mad minute at the end of the half effectively gifted the three points to Leicester, when an undisciplined defence first gave away a penalty which Dion Dublin happily converted and then seconds after the restart, with the home fans still cheering the penalty conversion, the defence went to sleep while Dublin ghosted in and snatched his second in the space of a minute!! Without the managers motivational half time talk. The troops still rallied surprisingly well, and kept Leicester pinned back in their half but were unlucky not to come back until it was too late, when Ben Wright grabbed what turned out to be a consolation goal 2 minutes before the final whistle Ben Wright picked up the Man of the Match champagne afterwards and when asked about his goal said “While I am pleased to score, it wasn’t enough to get the result we deserved, so it makes the goal meaningless for me”

Leicester 3 Crystal Palace 2
Palace Scorers : Christie (27) Wright (88)
Leicester Scorers : Williams (16) Dublin (Pen 45, 45)
Attendance : 32483
MOM : Ben Wright (Crystal Palace)

10th December 2005

Paul Rouch is still unavailable and the Assistant manager again is left in charge. The Owls took charge against a dispirited Palace team and were deserved l;eaders at half time after goals from Lee Coughlan and Graham Clarke. The second half was not much better for the Palace and when Graham put the Owls 3-0 up just past the hour all seemed lost. But a fortuitous couple of penalties in the last 5 minutes duly converted by Ward and Ingrao put a respectable sheen on the score line which wasn’t really deserved. :thdn:

Crystal Palace2 Sheff Wed 3
Palace Scorers : Ward (Pen 85) Ingrao (90)
Sheff Wed Scorers : Clarke (33) Coughlan (36) Graham (62)
Attendance : 22296
MOM : Graham Coughlan (Sheff Wed)

13th December 2005

Paul Rouch returns and is keen to reverse the damage that two back to back defeats are inflicting on the clubs chances of automatic promotion, but he fails to work his magic as Palace tumble to third successive defeat  Paul Shaw is the star of the show and his first half brace secured the win for the railwaymen, Palace were dominant throughout and in fairness were unlucky, Christie raised hopes of a comeback when he pulled one back mid way through the second half but it wasn’t to be

Crewe 2 Crystal Palace 1
Palace Scorers : Christie (72)
Crewe Scorers : Shaw (8,15)
Attendance : 6309
MOM : Paul Shaw (Crewe)

18th December 2005

At last, Palace break the awful run of defeats and look like the team they were earlier in the season, capable of getting promotion! Malcolm Christie scored both goals either side of the break, but Ben Wright got all the plaudits for his Man of the Match performance. Wright said after the game while collecting the MOM award “I am grateful for the faith the gaffer showed in bringing me to Palace and feel that I have been given a real opportunity here, and all I want to do is repay the faith of the manager and the fans with more performances like that one”

Crystal Palace 2 Preston 0
Palace Scorers : Christie (29, 63)
Attendance : 20367
MOM : Ben Wright (Crystal Palace)

26th December 2005

After the win against Preston you could see the confidence back in the team and they should have run out easy winners in this fixture, but were the victims of a merciless mugging Cresswell, against the run of play, hit Palace on the counter attack and
put Leeds ahead in the first half. The fact that Palace did not comeback and grab the result they deserved was down to the heroics of Neil Sullivan between the Leed sticks, his Man of the Match performance earned Leeds the win and left Palace frustrated.

Leeds 1 Crystal Palace 0
Leeds Scorers : Cresswell (36)
Attendance : 26849
MOM : Neil Sullivan (Leeds)

28th December 2005

A patched up team travelled to the Argyle, with sole aim of pulling three points from the game after a miserable month which had seen the Eagles lose more games than they had all season  Recalled Freedman put the Eagles ahead midway through the first half, but despite camping out in Plymouths goal are for the majority of the game were unable to extend their lead until Jon Macken finally doubled the advantage in the final 10 minutes. Michael Hughes had a great game and perhaps sent a message to the manager to play him more often! He said as much after the game when he picked up his Man of the Match award “All I can do is keep my head down, train hard, and show what I cam do when picked, I have no problem with the Gaffer but obviously, as with any other professional football player, I want to be involved as much as possible” When questioned later Rouch did say “I was very impressed with Hughesy today, and obviously I will bear his performances in mind when selecting teams, but that doesn’t guarantee I will pick him, in the same way that no other player is guaranteed a place”

Plymouth 0 Crystal Palace 2
Leeds Scorers : Freedman (28) Macken (81)
Attendance :17422
MOM : Michael Hughes (Crystal Palace)

December Awards

After a poor month result wise, it was perhaps unsurprising that no one at Selhurst Park was celebrating receiving any nominations in any of the monthly awards

Monthly Motty Fact

This is the first time that a team managed by Paul Rouch has lost 4 games in one month

League Position

3rd (Amazingly!)

Highest Rated Player

Wright 7.90

Top Scorer Morrisson, 10, Wright 10

The Royals Review - Injuries ravage the Royals!!!

It has been a diffiuclt few weeks for Reading and their manager as injuries have ravaged the squad and Hepburn is down to the bare bones. He has never seen anything like it as Reading have no fewer than twelve players are out injured at the moment. The players Hepburn does have fit look very tired but they are grinding out results as best they can and Hepburn is more than happy with the team's performances at the moment. Here is a run down of the latest games in Reading's season.......

Championship

Watford v Reading - (A) 13th December 2005

After the defeat of Southampton at St Mary's confidence was high going into this game with Watford. This was counter attacking football at it's best from Reading as Watford had much of the game but were unable to breakdown a stubborn Reading defence and were restricted to long shots that never troubled Stack in the Reading goal. Two goals in the first half and two in the second half gave Reading a great victory. Kevin Doyale notched two and Dave Kitson who has been injured more than he has played got a double as well. On loan striker Ebanks-Blake grabbed a consolation goal for Watford but it was all over long before that point. Hepburn was delighted with his team at full time.

Final Score - Watford 1 v 4 Reading
Goals - Watford - Ebanks-Blake (86)
Goals - Reading - Doyle (17,88), Kitson (pen,34,68)
Att - 21524
MOM - Stephen Hunt (Reading)

Championship

Reading v Leicester - (H) 17th December 2005

Confidence was high at the Madejski as they welcomed the visit of high flying Leicester City. On the day however Leicester proved to be the much better team as they played Reading off the pitch. Reading did not manage a single shot on target and in actual fact only created one half chance in the entire match. Leicester should have scored more goals to emphasise their superiority but in truth they did not need to.

Final Score - Reading 0 v 1 Leicester
Goals - Leicester - Wilcox (8)
Att - 23711
MOM - Alan Maybury (Leicester)

Championship

Norwich v Reading - (A) 26th December 2005

Coming off that dreadful performance at home against Leicester the last thing Reading needed was a trip to Carrow road to take on Norwich City, probably one of the toughest games they would face all season. Reading started slowly again and quickly found themselves one down after Dean Ashton headed Norwich in front. Hepburn's gameplan of counter atacking football went out the window and Reading started to dominate the game with James Harper at the heart of everything good for Reading. Right on half time Dave Kitson pulled Reading level, a goal which they deserved for their efforts in the first half. The seond half was end to end stuff as both teams just went hell for leather at each other trying to find a winner. The finishing was woeful especially from Norwich but in the last minute that man James Harper scored the winner and the Reading bench was ecstatic. Norwich maybe feel unlucky with the result but they should have taken their chances. Reading were delighted with three valuable points at full time.

Final Score - Norwich 1 v 2 Reading
Goals - Norwich - Ashton (15)
Goals - Reading - Kitson (44), Harper (90)
Att - 25778
MOM - James Harper (Reading)

Championship

Sheffield Wednesday v Reading - (A) 28th December 2005

It was an injury ravaged Reading that travelled to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday. Hepburn only had two subs on the bench and his team looked really tired during this game. They struggled in front of goal as the composure form the strikers looked to have gone. At the back lack of concentration let Sheffield Wednesday grab a winner. Poor game form both teams but Reading deserced at least a point for this one.

Final Score - Sheffield Wednesday 1 v 0 Reading
Goals - Sheffield Wednesday - Clarke (50)
Sent Off - Gunnarsson (Reading)
Att - 23413
MOM - Craig Rocastle (Sheffield Wednesday)

Championship

Crewe v Reading - (A) 2nd January 2006

The injury effect was in full swing at the Madejski now as yet more players were out injured and Hepburn had to field players who were no where near fit but they managed to grind out a 1-1 draw here. They were under the cosh most of the game but Lita gave them out hope when he put Reading ahead but they were unabe to hold onto the lead and Eddie Johnson on loan from Man Utd equalised. More misery for Hepburn has three more players picked up knocks, the most notable was an injury to the goalscorer Lita!!!!

Final Score - Crewe 1 v 1 Reading
Goals - Crewe - Johnson (72)
Goals - Reading - Lita (52)
Att - 6535
MOM - Anthony Tonkin (Crewe)

Championship

Reading v Leeds - (H) 4th January 2006

The games were coming thick and fast for Reading and it was back to the Madejski to face Leeds. Hepburn was again forced to field a half unfit team but them somehow managed to get the three points and quite emphatically as well. They dominated the first half and should have been at least three up. Hepburn brought in twenty year old reserve striker Eric Obinna and he got his first goal for Reading on his debut after only twenty minutes to put them ahead. In the second half Reading again dominated but were unable to increase their lead. Leeds came back into the game as Reading tired but the defence stood firm and the finally got number two right on full time through Dave Kitson to cap a brilliant performance.

Final Score - Reading 2 v 0 Leeds
Goals - Reading - Obinna (20), Kitson (90)
Att - 13866
MOM - Dave Kitson (Reading)

FA Cup 3rd Round

Man Utd v Reading - (A) 7th January 2006

Well next up for Reading was a trip to Old Trafford to face Man Utd. Hepburn was hoping they would play a few of their resserves but they never unfortunately and Reading were thrashed. They put a good fight but were never gonna Utd especially when they can bring on Wayne Rooney one of the best young players in the world!!!! Reading did manage a goal through Dave Kitson as a wee momento from their day out but that was it.

Final Score - Man Utd 4 v 1 Reading
Goals - Man Utd - Saha (17,39), Ronaldo (28), Rooney (60)
Goals - Reading - Kitson (pen,40)
Att - 56758
MOM - Miguel (Man Utd)

Hepburn has been pleased at how his team have played recently and with all the injuries as well. Hepburn has went to the chairman to ask for an A&E department to be built at the Madejski to deal with all the injuries his squad has right now!!!!!
