Underachieving Stranraer have to settle for play-offs
Stranraer went through a poor period during the winter months that seen them drop out of the title race. Peterhead continued to dominate and it looks likely they will be league champions come the end of the season. After an ok start to the season, it started going downhill due to a lack of effort from some players who should have done a lot better and the team was fast becoming a side of underachievers.
The whole of December saw us go without a win; this included a 3-2 away defeat to Inverness CT in the Scottish Cup, which sent us out of that competition but that came as no great surprise. As soon as January came, the transfer window opened and it brought 2 young strikers with it from East Stirling. John Thomson and Graham West both cost 30k but the investment in them should pay off in the future, it certainly already is with West who, as of the end of Sunday’s session had 8 goals in his first 10 appearances.
We only really started to get going again by the end of January by which time we were struggling to hold onto 4th spot in the league. A 4-1 away win at East Fife certainly rejuvenated the side, as the result was followed up by an excellent 5-3 win over Brechin which saw Lee Johnson come off the bench and grab a hat-trick. After this game, new signing West and Johnson started to form an excellent partnership up front and both scored in the next game, which would have gave us a 2-1 victory, had it not been for Montrose’s last minute equalizer.
The rest of February saw us come away with 2 draws and a victory, which kept us within the top 4. The session ended with a 2-1 victory over Alloa, which put us 6 points ahead of Berwick who had been snapping at our heels and also gave us a bit of hope of finishing in 2nd or 3rd which we are capable of doing given the right results come our way.
We should certainly hold onto a play-off position anyway and hopefully can do one better than last year by winning in the final this time around.
