Browning shows lack of experience and players show lack of quality as Sheffield United plunge

downward

The last few weeks have not been good for all connected with Sheffield United as the club seems to have

pressed the self destruct button, the question now must be, can they stop this alarming slump and

quickly?

Heres a look at the abysmal run that has saw the club slide down the Championship table :

Tuesday 18th October 2005: Preston v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola championship : 2-1 loss

The mighty slide begins!
While we fancied our chances against Preston, they obviously had other ideas
Dave Nugent fired them into the lead in the 21 st minute to give them the goal their play had threatned

and if I'm being honest, deserved as well. We could have been three or four down by the time they half

time whistle was blown but good excellet goal keeping kept us in the match.
The second half was far better from our point of view as we pressed Preston hard in our search for an

equaliser and it finally came through Alan Quinn in the 76th minute. My players seemed to think they had

done enough for the day and switched off soon after this goal, this allowed Preston to grab the win with

a goal in the dying seconds of the match from Chris Sedgwick.

The moral of the story? YOU PLAY THE GAME UNTIL THE FINAL WHISTLE

Saturday 22nd October 2005 : Luton v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 2-2 draw

Luton started the match brightly and it only took eight minutes for them to take the lead through Dean

Morgan, this seemed to wake my lot up and four minutes later we pulled level through a Paul Ifill strike

\o/ Ade Akinbiyi gave us the lead with his 35th minute strike.
In the second half both teams had some great chances and it would have been fair to say that the match

was finely poised and could go either way but yet again as the match was drawing to a close my players

switched off allowing Dean Morgan to grab an 89th leveller for Luton. Another 2 points thrown away

Wednesday 26th October 2005 : Sheff Utd v Watford : Carling Cup Third Round : 1-0 loss

We pounded and pounded at Watford's goal and created several great chances to have this match sewn up by

half time but sadly it wasn't to be. In the second half we continued our assualt on the goalmouth but

continued to be denied by a combination of poor finishing and great goalkeeping keep us at bay and yet

again my players swtiched off at the end of the game! This gave Gavin Mahon the oppotunity to get in

behind the defence and score the goal that knocked us out of the cup in the 88th minute.

Saturday 29th October 2005 : Sheff Utd v Coventry : Coca-Cola Championship : 1-1 draw

Another woeful lacklusture peformance from my lads here
Things looked bright in the 12th minute when Krisztian Kenesei opened the scoring for us \o/
Again the team went to sleep and the only miracle was that Coventry were unable to take advantage of our

slackness until the 70th minute when Dele Adebola broke clear of the last defender, rounded the keeper

and slotted the ball home.
P!sh

Tuesday 1st November 2005: Sheff Utd v Norwich Coca-Cola Championship : 1-0 loss

Norwich manager Sandy Pettigrew took it upon himself to speak out in the press before this game telling

them he "expected an easy win", sad fact is, his Norwich side were fortunate to win this one, well lets

face it though according to the msn grapevine Pettigrew himself is a Heart of Midlothian fan (who just

in case you didn't know, lost to a poor Celtic side last night :thup and he is obviously trying to

take a lead from his hero Mad Vlad. In reality this match was possibly the dullest match of the season

for 80minutes with both teams creating very little in the way of the chances, Sheff Utd had a few good

chances to win the game before the end (as did Norwich) before Ryan Jarivs managed to finally get the

breakthrough in the 90th minute.

Media sources reported after the match that Pettigrew had placed £50 on Jarvis as the first scorer + a

draw at half time + Norwich to win at full time at odds of 50000/1 winning himself a total of

£2.5million.

Saturday 5th November 2005 : Sheff Wed v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 2-1 defeat

Remember remember the 5th of November!
It's the day Sheff Utd lost yet another fecking game
With no love lost between either team this was always going to be a tense affair and it was!
Right up until the 41st minute when Chris Brunt broke free and opened the scoring, and before the Sheffield United players could compose themselves Deon Burton had given Wednesday a 2-0 lead with 43 minutes on the clock. Wednesday should have been out of sight before the hour mark but were unable to finish, Steven Kabba pulled one back for United in the 85th minute but by then it was too late to make any sort of comeback.

Saturday 19th November 2005 : Sheff Utd v Derby : Coca-Cola Championship : 0-0 draw

Crap 0-0 draw, we should have won but it would appear my strikers have gone on strike
Thats all I can really say about this.

So we haven't won a game in the last seven and are going down quicker than $2 hooker
This has to stop now or any hope of success this season will be gone.

Where Eagles dare

So the Rookie manager who was sensationally announced as Ian Dowie’s successor at the start of the season has finally won the fans round! The last game saw the fans chanting his name for the first time. The fact that he has Palace on their longest unbeaten run in the clubs history might have helped the change in attitude, but even the most sceptical of Eagle fans will have to admit it has been a flawless start for the new boy!

1st October 2005[/b]

Well, with the fans finally getting on turned on by rouchies own special brand of sexy football, they play a real stinker in the midlands! A fortunate and promising start when Butterfield scores in the second minute is cancelled out in the second half with Silva’s strike. A 1-1 draw and man of the match to the home defender Tomasz Hajto

Derby 1 Palace 1
Palace Scorers : Butterfield (2)
Derby Scorers : Silva (55)
Att : 25852
MOM : Tomasz Hajto (Derby)

16th October 2005[/b]

A top of the table clash after the international break but a stalemate where both sides cancelled each other out and the only reportworthy event was that Ricketts was sent off in the 87th minute leaving little time for the Eagles to take advantage. Man of the mtach award was given to the Wolves keeper, that does say something about the game! :thdn:

Palace 0 Wolves 0
Att : 24669
MOM : Stefan Postma (Wolves)

18th October 2005[/b]

A close fought game with Palace playing well below the standards they had set earlier in the season! A dull first half brightened up only by a Andy Johnson goal from the spot in the 8th and such was the paucity of quality in the game, it was enough to earn AJ yet another Magnum for his MOM award

Plymouth 0 Palace 1
Palace Scorers : Johnson (Pen 8)
Att : 15083
MOM : Andy Johnson (Crystal Palace)

22nd October 2005[/b]

**** game, **** performance, If palace were poor with their chances, the only person who could be said to earn his wages today was Ross Turnbull, the Crewe keeper who kept the Railwaymen in the game with some solid keeping

Crewe 0 Palace 0 Att : 8413
MOM : Ross Turnbull(Crewe)

26th October 2005[/b]

At last, Palace move in to top gear and Leeds are unable to keep up as the thoroughbred that is AJ runs amok and plunders a hatrick! Leeds did equalise after his first goal when Nathan Blake headed past Speroni to give the Elland road faithful brief hop but Palace were a class above and although Andy Johnsons hatrick earned him yet another man of the match award, Marcu Berg also had a great game grabbing a goal and assisting AJ admirably
Leeds 1 Palace 4
Palace Scorers : Johnson(5, 26, 69) Berg (59)
Leeds Scorers : Blake (17)
Att : 23475
MOM : Andy Johnson (Crystal Palace)

29th October 2005[/b]

Some days no matter how well the opposition play, everything goes right in front of goal and the scoreline doesn’t quite match what the fans see! Brighton must have wondered what went wrong as the finishing power of Palace left a very embarrassed and humbled home side scratching their heads. AJ as early as the 4th minute neatly sidestepped the defence and slotted home. Brighton were level 4 minutes later, but then Macken struck a sweet strike from the edge of the box and nearly bust the net to re-establish the lead, 10 minutes later Macken was celebrating again as he headed the away side 3-1 up. Rihilati secured his goal bonus 2 minutes later and Johnson made it 5-1 with just over half an hour elapsed. A shell shocked did pull another one back when Kazim-Richards netted, but the second half saw Marcus Berg put himself on the score sheet and Macken crown his hatrick with a sweet lob to really rub it in for the south coast club!the roar of the Eagles drowning the shriek of the Seagulls

Brighton 2 Palace 7
Palace Scorers : Johnson(4,33) Macken (15, 25, 75) Rihilati (27) Berg (59)
BrightonScorers : Carpenter (8) Kazim-Richards (41)
Att : 23475
MOM : Jon Macken (Crystal Palace)

Awards

Jon Macken was awaded third place in the goal of the match for his lovely individual skill, beating 2 defenders and scoring with an outstanding lob against Brighton  Still no manager of the month for the only manager unbeaten in all competitions??

Where Eagles dare

The season is unfolding like a dream for the Palace fans. They must have feared the worst when Simon Jordan replaced the highly regarded Ian Dowie with a rookie no name, but the change has so far proved to be a very successful with Palace moving into November with an unbeaten record in all competitions still standing!!

1st November 2005[/b]

The Pikeys visit to Selhurst park was successful on and off the field. There was no fighting off the pitch between the rival fans, and the Millwall showed little fight on the patch as Palace steamrollered their way to yet another victory! Richie Foran scored the opener just past the half hour mark which sent the Palace in to the break a goal to the good! Danny Granville had to go off injured in the second half after a clumsy challenge from Millwall’s Matt Lawrence. Foran grabbed his second just before Matt Lawrence saw red and was dismissed from the field of play. Jon Macken sealed the win just before the final whistle and Richie Foran picked up the Man of the Match champagne for his brace

Palace 3 Millwall 0
Palace Scorers : Foran (32, 81) Macken (89)
Att : 26477
MOM : Richie Foran (Crystal Palace)

5th November 2005[/b]

Another home game for the Eagles and this time it was Reading visiting. Reading shocked the hosts when they had the temerity to score the opening goal on 25 minutes with a nicely crafted move from Lero Lita! Palace responded well though and Marcus Berg grabbed the deserved equaliser just before the break. The second half was very even game with both sides going for the winner, but it was Palace that finally got the breakthrough as Andy Johnson scored the winner with just 2 minutes left on the clock, earning himself yet another Man of the Match Magnum

Palace 2 Reading 1
Palace Scorers : Berg (45) Johnson (88)
Reading Scorers : Lita (25)
Att : 24995
MOM : Andy Johnson (Crystal Palace)

19th November 2005[/b]

A trip to the potteries for the ultra confident leaguer leaders and another game where the result never looked in doubt. Marcus Berg scoring the only goal of the first half and Richie Foran converting a penalty in the second half ensured another three points were pocketed. Jon Macken was awarded the Man of the Match award for his dominant presence in leading the line.

Stoke 0 Palace 2
Palace Scorers : Berg (31) Foran (Pen 77)
Att : 9637
MOM : Jon Macken (Crystal Palace)

26th November 2005[/b]

A much tighter and tougher game than the previous 3. Ipswich threatened throughout and Palace had to be at their defensive best, Marcus Berg scored just before the half, and it proved to be enough to give Palace the three points on the day! Rihilati was pivotal in securing the points as he held the midfield and defence together, which is why he was rewarded with the man of the match nomination

Palace 1 Ipswich 0
Palace Scorers : Berg (29)
Att : 25296
MOM : Rihilati (Crystal Palace)

30th November 2005[/b]

The unbelievable run that has catapulted Palace to the top of the League and kept them there continues as Palace brush aside a lack lustre QPR, although the goals were late in coming, there was little doubt they would arrive!! Marcus Berg maintained his recent goal scoring form to put the Eagles ahead late in the second half, followed by a Tony Popovic goal from the penalty spot to give Palace another win. Jobi McAnuff ensured that Palace had a clean sweep of all of the Man of the Match Awards for November with a creative midfield performance

Palace 2 QPR 0
Palace Scorers : Berg (79) Popovic (pen 86)
Att : 17381
MOM : Jobi McAnuff (Crystal Palace)

Awards

At last the manager of the month is awarded to the only manager unbeaten in all competitions Paul Rouch, some are shocked it has taken so long for this young rookie to gain the award after guiding Palace to top of the table and into the League Cup Quarter finals  Aki Rihilati picked up a runners up award in the player of the month award to seal another good month for the Palace
