Scottish fool takes Portsmouth to new depths Saturday 7th April 2007: West Ham v Portsmouth : Premiership: 0-0 draw
A very tight affair this one as both sides fought to break each other down, but in the end neither side could find away through, West Ham fans had their excitement raised when their side won a penalty in the 38th minute but joy turned to despair a few seconds later as Dean Ashton flashed the ball past the left hand post.
Monday 9th April 2007: Portsmouth v Aston Villa: Premiership: 4-2 loss
A bit of rubbish performance in this one as it took my lot 67 minutes to get going and sadly we found ourselves 4-0 down at that point in time.
Dagoberto sent Villa on their way in the 10th minute, Shunsuke Nakamura doubled the advantage in the 32nd minute and another ex Celtic player, Stillian Petrov, made it three in the 42nd minute. The start of the second half wasn’t much better as Gabriel Agbonlahor made it four in the 53rd minute. We staged a mini revival after this as Andrey Arshavin pulled one back in the 67th minute and Nwankwo Kanu pulled another back in the 76th minute but by this point it was too little too late.
Saturday 14th April 2007: Portsmouth v Middlesbrough: Premiership: 2-0 win
A win!
Finally managed to pick up three points, Andres Guardado gave us the lead in the 32nd minute but we couldn’t make sure until the final minute when Andrey Arshavin secured all three points.
Saturday 21st April 2007: Watford v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-2 draw
Another inept performance as we managed to throw away three points to an inferior Watford side, We took the lead through Benjani in the 45th minute, Pedro Mendes gave us another goal in the 66th minute and things were looking great for us but it wasn’t long before the self destruct button was pressed by my clowns, Hameur Bouazza was allowed to waltz through our defence in the 81st minute and hammer the ball home to pull one back for Watford, just when it looked like we had done enough to hold on to the win Agustin Delgado lost his marker at the back post and headed home to grab a draw for Watford.
Saturday 28th April 2007: Portsmouth v Tottenham : Premiership: 3-3 draw
A thrilling match at Fratton park this one as both sides shared six goals between them.
Jermain Defore sent spurs on their way in the 34th minute but his goal was cancelled out by Andrey Arshavin in the 49th minute, Arshavin was on target again six minutes later to fire the home side into the lead, the lead was short lived though as Dimitar Berbatov levelled the game up in the 62nd minute. We looked to have wrapped up the points in the 84th minute when Manuel Fernandes grabbed a third goal in the 84th minute but even then we couldn’t hang on for the win as Sol Campbell headed the ball past his own keeper two minutes from time.
Thursday 17th May 2007: Man City v Portsmouth: Premiership: 4-2 win
A fine performance from my lads here.
Things didn’t look so bright to start with for us in this one as Ousamane Dabo gave City the lead in the 10th minute. Andres Guardado pulled us level in the 31st minute. Benjani gave us the lead in the second half with his 53rd minute strike, Manuel Fernandes made it three in the 65th minute with a stunning strike and Mido was on a mere minute later to make it 4-1. Michael Silberbauer pulled one back for City in the dying seconds of the game but it was nothing more than a consolation goal.
Thursday 17th May 2007: Portsmouth v Wigan: Premiership: 4-2 win
A fine end to the season for this lot as they came back from two down to crush Wigan.
Henri Camara looked to have put Wigan on easy street as he grabbed a double to put his side 2-0 up (4mins and 23rd minute). Wigan would go in happy at half time with their first half performance with little idea what was in store for them in the second half.
Five minutes after the restart Benjani pulled one back for us, Benjani was on hand in the 69th minute to level things up, he struck again in the 83rd minute to put us into the lead and again in the 87th minute to make sure of the win.
A reasonable finish to the season as we met the board and supporters expectations by avoiding a relegation struggle.
But there is no rest for the wicked (or for me writing this report it would seem) so we move onto the business of the new season.

With scouting trips taking up the managers free time as the season started it was left to assistant manager Tommy Burns to take control of the side for the first 3 games of the season.

Wednesday 19th September 2007: Portsmouth v Darlington: League Cup 2nd Round: 3-0 win
An easy win here against our lower league opponents.
Gary O’Neil sent us on our way right on the stroke of half time, O’Neil was on hand again in the 57th minute to double the advantage, and Matthew Taylor put the result beyond doubt with his 68th minute strike.
Saturday 22nd September 2007: Portsmouth v Blackburn: Premiership: 0-0 draw
Quite frankly the most boring draw ever. I blame Hepburn tbh.
Saturday 29th September 2007: Wigan v Portsmouth: Premiership: 3-2 loss
A very even match this one as both sides went at it tooth and nail in an effort to grab the points, sadly for us it was Wigan that grabbed the points on this occasion.
Juan Pablo Angel opened the scoring in the 19th minute, Matias Quintana pulled as level in the 35th minute. Into the second half Emile Heskey put Wigan back into the league in the 62nd minute and Lee McCulloch added a third six minutes later, Maximillano Moralez pulled one back for us in the 74th minute but we couldn’t find a way through to square up the game.
Wednesday 3rd October 2007: Portsmouth v West Ham: Premiership: 4-2 loss
We started this match really badly as we found ourselves two down within five minutes through goals from Matthew Etherington (4mins) and Carlos Tevez (5mins), Luiz Adriano pulled one back for us in the 12th minute and Matias Quintana pulled us right back into the game in the 45th minute with his lovely header. West Ham took the lead right after the restart as Etherington grabbed his second goal of the game in the 47th minute, but the Hammers could not hold the lead for very long as Quintana grabbed his second of the match in the 50th minute.
Dean Ashton was on hand in the 71st minute to wrap up the points for West Ham though.
Great Game.
Saturday 20th October 2007: Charlton v Portsmouth: Premiership: 1-0 loss
Pretty crap match this one with no real chances of any note except for in the 87th minute when Andy Reid raced clear of the last defender to coolly slot the ball home.
Wednesday 24th October 2007: Southampton v Portsmouth: Carling Cup 3rd Round: 1-0 loss
We where robbed in this one by Grzegorz Rasiak’s 7th minute strike, which incidentally was Southampton’s only attempt at goal, we battered away at their goal for the rest of the game but where unable to find a way through.
Saturday 27th October 2007: Portsmouth v Man City: Premiership: 2-0 win
A nice result here against Manchester City.
After a goalless first half Manuel Fernandes finally gave the home fans something to shout about in the 59th minute as he fired us into the lead. We doubled the score seven minutes later as Niko Kranjcar found the target.
Saturday 3rd November 2007: West Brom: v Portsmouth: Premiership: 3-2 loss
We had it all and we threw it away!
We took the lead in the 10th minute through a Matthew Taylor penalty, Taylor had the chance to add the second with his 36th minute penalty but he blazed it over the bar.
A minute later Maximilliano Moralez did make it two. Things took a turn for the worst in the 45th minute as Dejan Stefanovic was sent off for a cynical foul and John Hartson pulled one back for West Brom.
The second half was all West Brom as they looked to take advantage of their numerical advantage, John Hartson struck again in the 54th minute to level things up and Zoltan Gera struck in the 74th minute to give West Brom the win.
Wednesday 14th November 2007: Portsmouth v Fulham: Premiership: 1-1 draw
A totally undeserved point for Fulham was we played them off the park from start to finish. We finally made the breakthrough in the 86th minute through Gary O’Neil and we looked to have done enough to secure the win but Bjorn Runstrom had other ideas as he blasted Fulham level with a minute remaining on the clock.
Saturday 24th November 2007: Portsmouth v Arsenal: Premiership: 4-2 loss
Killed by Arsenal here and who opened the scoring for them? It was ex Arsenal diddy Sol Campbell with an own goal in the fifth minute, coincidence, I think not!
Thierry Henry added the second in the 16th minute, we did however managed to keep ourselves in the game just after half time as Benjani pulled one back for us, Vassikri Diaby restored the two goal cushion in the 70th minute and Kolo Torue added the fourth in the 80th minute, Garry O’Neil pulled another one back for us with a minute left to play, but we were never really in this game and didn’t really deserve anything from it.
Saturday 1st December 2007: Portsmouth v Reading: Premiership: 1-0 loss
Shocking performance from my misfits here as they where out passed, out played and generally out classed by a less than brilliant Reading team.
The only goal of the game was scored by Kevin Doyle in the 32nd minute.
Saturday 8th December 2007: Portsmouth v Middlesbrough: Premiership: 3-2 defeat
We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in this one, Benjani gave us a dream start in the first minute, and things looked great for us as Andrey Arshavin added a second in the seventh minute.
Cue the Boro fight back, Milan Baros pulled one back in the 22nd minute, they had to wait late for the equalizer but found it through Fabio Rochemback in the 77th minute and Baros was on hand again to secure the win with his 81st minute strike.
Wednesday 12th December 2007: Sunderland v Portsmouth: Premiership: 3-0 loss
We played really well for 78mins of this match but couldn’t find a goal and oh how we where punished for that, Stephen Elliott grabbed the first for Sunderland in the 78th minute, David Connolly added a second in the 80th minute before he added his second and Sunderland’s third right on the stroke of full time.
Saturday 15th December 2007: Aston Villa v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-2 draw
Steven Fletcher put Villa in the lead in this one with his 22nd minute goal, Andy O’Brien was sent off in the 61st minute for a stupid tackle that earned him his second yellow card of the match, but even with ten men we managed to pull one back four minutes after the sending off through Andres Guardado. Villa looked to have secured the points when Steven Fletcher struck in the 90th minute, but Benjani had other ideas scoring with the last kick of the ball in the 94th minute.
Saturday 22nd December 2007: Portsmouth v Man Utd: Premiership: 1-1 draw
We somehow managed to escape with a draw in this one, Louis Saha put the visitors in the from the in 20th minute and things got worse for us as Dejan Stefanovic was sent off in the 32nd minute, but somehow we managed to pull one back a minute later through Benjani which as it turned out was enough to take a point from the match.
Wednesday 26th December 2007: Wolves v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-0 win
Andres Guardado struck in the 15th minute to continue his run of scoring form and that was the only goal of a rather dull first half. Wolves lost the plot in the second half was they had two players sent off within twelve minutes of each other (Mark Davies 63rd minute and Jay Bothroyd 75th minute) Sol Campbell added a second for Portsmouth in the 80th minute.
Saturday 29th December 2007: Portsmouth v Chelsea : Premiership: 3-1 win
The might Chelsea paid a visit to Fratton Park, and we killed them!
Andrey Arshavin gave us an early lead in the 2nd minute, Sol Campbell added a second in the 19th minute, and we managed to hold onto our two goal cushion until half time.
Ten minutes after the restart Andriy Shevchenko pulled a goal back for Chelsea and we braced ourselves for the Chelsea onslaught and try to salvage this match they did! But they couldn’t find the breakthrough they needed and Benjani put the result beyond all doubt as he added a third for the home side in the dying seconds of the game.
Tuesday 1st January 2008: Portsmouth v Newcastle: 2-1 win
More points \o/
Sol Campbell gave us the lead in the 32nd minute, Andres Guardado added the second thirteen minutes from full time, and Fredson pulled a goal back for Newcastle with three minutes remaining.
Saturday 5th January 2008: Cardiff v Portsmouth: FA Cup 3rd Round: 3-3 draw
Championship opposition should have provided an easy test for us here, sadly it didn’t, A Matthew Taylor own goal gave Cardiff the lead in the 3rd minute, New Signing Kevin Vandenbergh pulled us level in the 28th minute, Peter Canero added a second for Cardiff in the 36th minute and ex Rangers clown Steven Thompson made it three with four minutes remaining in the first half.
A James Fowler own goal in the 57th minute gave us hope and Eddie Johnson pulled us level in the 66th minute, but we just couldn’t find a fourth goal and now have to face replay.
Saturday 12th January 2008: Tottenham v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-0 loss
We didn’t deserve anything from this match so it’s probably just as well we didn’t take anything from it. Jermain Defoe gave Spurs the lead in the 43rd minute and Aaron Lennon added the second goal in the 66th minute.
Wednesday 16th January 2008: Portsmouth v Cardiff: FA Cup 3rd Round Replay: 2-0 win
We finally put away this Championship scum at the second time of asking.
Kevin Vandenbergh sent us on our way right on the stroke of half time and Andres Guardado added the second in the 64th minute.
Saturday 19th January 2008: Blackburn v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-1 loss
Another rubbish match but at least this one had more goals than the last time we faced Blackburn. Sergio Peter opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Stillian Petrov added the second in the 63rd minute. Manuel Fernandes added one for us in the 87th minute.
Wednesday 23rd January 2008: Portsmouth v Everton: Premiership: 2-0 win
Struggling Everton visited Fratton park and will be more than a little frustrated with their performance, Both of our goals came via Eddie Johnson, the first coming the 41st minute and the second in the 57th minute. Everton will feel their performance would have at least merited a draw.
Saturday 26th January 2008: Portsmouth v Man Utd: FA Cup 4th Round: 2-1 loss
We gave a good account of ourselves against Man Utd here but sadly it wasn’t to be our day, Louis Saha scored the first for Utd in the 35th minute, Wayne Rooney added the second in the 61st minute. We pulled one back through Eddie Johnson in the 73rd minute but couldn’t find a second.
Tuesday 29th January 2008: Portsmouth v Wigan: 1-0 win
Not the best of matches this one as we struggled to overcome a resolute Wigan defence, as it turns out Matias Quintana’s 25th minute goal was enough for us to take all three points.
Saturday 2nd February 2008: West Ham v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-1 loss
Things started brightly for us against The Hammers in this one as Andres Guardado gave us a sixth minute lead, sadly that was all we offered up in the way of resistance as we then allowed West Ham to run riot, Dean Ashton levelled things up in the 40th minute, two minutes later they had taken the lead through a Garbriel Tamas penalty.
Saturday 9th February 2008: Portsmouth v Charlton: Premiership: 2-1 win
Charlton’s indiscipline probably cost them at least a point in this game, not that I’m complaining though!
Eddie Johnson gave us the lead in the 15th minute, but our lead was short lived as Bryan Hughes levelled with a 17th minute penalty. Djimi Traore was sent off for Charlton in the 44th minute and Gonzalo Sorondo was sent off in the 60th minute. Eddie Johnson made sure of the points with his 80th minute strike.
Saturday 23rd February 2008: Man City v Portsmouth: Premiership: 1-0 loss
Nothing much to shout about in this one either as Lebonhang Mokena’s goal was all that separated both sides after the ninety minutes.
Saturday 1st March 2008: Portsmouth v West Brom: Premiership: 3-1 win
Surprise package West Brom visited Fratton park looking to collect another three points to add to their already impressive tally for the season, Sadly for them this wasn’t their day, Kevin Vandenbergh opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, Niko Kranjcar made it two right on the stroke of half time, Nigel Quashie pulled one back for West Brom just after the restart but it was Eddie Johnson (who else) that made sure of all three points for my lot.
Saturday 15th March 2008: Fulham v Portsmouth : Premiership: 2-1 loss
Totally inept performance from this lot once more, Bjorn Runstrom opened the scoring for Fulham in the 3rd minute, Michael Brown got the second in the 73rd minute before Andrey Arshavin grabbed our consolation in the 90th minute.
Saturday 22nd March 2008: Portsmouth v Sunderland: Premiership: 2-0 win
We just about scraped by Sunderland in this one but we left it very late though, Ilsinho grabbed our first in the 86th minute and a Stephen Caldwell own goal made sure of the points in the 88th minute.
Saturday 29th March 2008: Portsmouth v Liverpool: Premiership: 2-1 loss
We took the early incentive in this match against underachieving Liverpool, as Eddie Johnson put us in the lead in the 27th minute but Peter Crouch was on hand in the 40th minute to level the game and Steven Gerrard was at the back post three minutes later to head home his side’s second goal. Second half was a dull affair but Liverpool never really looked like losing this game.
Saturday 5th April 2008: Reading v Portsmouth: Premiership: 3-2 loss
Another snatching defeat from draws of victory here, Matias Quintana gave us the lead in the 5th minute and Garry O’Neil added the second on the 26th minute, Kevin Doyle got his first goal in the 44th minute, Dave Kitson levelled two minutes after the break, Kevin Doyle struck four minutes from time to grab all three points for the home side and leave my team looking like idiots……….again.
