Scottish diddy drags Portsmouth to new lows!!
Having just taken over at Portsmouth new manager Steff Browning found himself in a storm of controversy as the fans felt he wasn’t up to the job, and results thus far have proven the sceptical fans correct!
The new manager set about making the squad his own as he blew 18.5 million pounds on four players:
Players in
Andrey Arshavin joined from Zenith Petersburg in a deal worth 8.75m.
Edgar Davids joined from Tottenham in a million pound deal.
Mido also came in from Spurs in a deal rumoured to be around the 3.5m mark.
Andrés Guardado joined from Atlas in a five million pound deal.
No players have yet been kicked out of the club to date.
The friendly matches
09/07/2006: Pirin 2001 0 Portsmouth 6
11/07/2006: Shumen 2001 0 Portsmouth 2
16/07/2006: Svetkavista 0 Portsmouth 4
27/07/2006: Hamburg 1 Portsmouth 1
And with those minor trivialities out of the way it was time to get on with the serious business of avoiding relegation!
Saturday 20th August 2006: Portsmouth v Liverpool: Premiership: 1-1 draw
We couldn’t have wished for a harder start to the season really, coming up against one of the top sides in the country was always going to be a big ask for us, it took all of ten minutes for Liverpool to display their quality as Harry Kewell rattled the ball home from 25 yards to give his side the lead. Lady luck smiled on us a little bit during the rest of the first half and we went in at half time very fortunate to trail by only the one goal.
We started the second half brightly and saw a lot more of the ball; we managed to make our possession count in the 55th minute as Benjani headed home from close range.
Both sides created chances during the remainder of the game but where unable to convert them.
1-1Was a good result in my eyes!
Wednesday 23rd August 2006: Chelsea v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-0 loss
Oh the hard games just keep coming here, this time we found ourselves up against the boys of the Russian billionaire Mr Abramovich and the two players that scored the goals merely underlined the quality Chelsea have at their disposal.
New signing Adriano opened the scoring the 10th minute and it was another new boy that added the second in the 49th minute, Esteban Cambiasso.
The truth was we weren’t in this match what so ever and the only shock was that Chelsea didn’t sure many more.
Saturday 26th August 2006: Portsmouth v Blackburn: Premiership: 1-1 draw
Another hard fought point this one!
Blackburn, also under the new management of Andrew Hepburn would have had exactly the same though and a draw was probably a fair reflection of the game.
Jason Roberts opened the scoring for Blackburn in the 5th minute as our defence was cut open like a knife through butter. Egyptian refugee Mido pulled us level in the 37th minute and that is all she wrote.
Wednesday 13th September 2006: Sheff Utd v Portsmouth: Premiership: Another crappy 1-1 draw
Yes we really fancied our chances in this one, sadly so did our opponents as we struggled to even secure a single point and our first win of the season.
Mido scored for the second game on the trot in the 34th minute and we looked for our 1-0 lead at half time. In the second half my players seemed to think that the game was already over and practically stopped playing altogether and Sheff Utd dominated the entire second half, Rob Hulse pulled them level in the 65th minute and they created plenty of chances to take all three point and we must count ourselves very lucky that by some miracle of god they weren’t able to take them.
Sunday 17th September 2006: Portsmouth v Charlton: Premiership: 2-0 win
Finally!
Our first win of the season \o/
After the disappointment of failing to beat Sheff Utd the previous week we where determined to take all three points from this potentially difficult match against Charlton, and we did!
Mido continued his run of good form as he opened the scoring in the 16th minute, Charlton found themselves down to 10 men as Luke Young was ordered off in the 36th minute and Pedro Mendes grabbed his first of the season in the 56th minute to secure all three points.
Wednesday 20th September 2006: Wolves v Portsmouth: Carling Cup second Round: 1-0 win
They may only be Championship diddies but we sure as hell make hard work of beating them!
Wolves had far more of the ball in the first half and would have considered themselves unfortunate to go in the 0-0 at ht. The second half was a much closer affair with ball going end to end, we managed to make the breakthrough in the 64th minute through Mido (who else?) and could have scored more, but by the same token Wolves had plenty of chances to at least salvage a draw and force extra time.
Saturday 23rd September 2006: Newcastle v Portsmouth: Premiership: 2-1 loss
Terrible performance from my lot here saw Newcastle dominate this match from start to finish (shameful eh?) and we only seemed to realise that we could venture into their half in the final few minutes of the game. It was only due to Newcastle’s woeful finishing that the match remained level at half time as they wasted a whole host of great chances to take the lead.
It only took them two minutes in the second half to get their act together though as Damien Duff fired a vicious volley past the hapless David James to give his side a deserved lead. Man Utd kid, on loan at Newcastle this season, Giuseppe Rossi doubled the lead in the 63rd minute and Newcastle where on easy street. It had taken us 85 minutes to realise we could venture into the Newcastle half and three minutes later Andrés Guardado pulled one back for us, but it was far too little far too late.
Sunday 1st October 2006: Portsmouth v Arsenal: Premiership: 1-0 loss
I always felt this one would be a step too far for us and I was proved correct as we struggled to get to grips with this game from the word go.
The score line doesn’t tell the whole story of this one, Arsenal’s only goal game through Adebayor in the 12th minute but in reality they could have scored about 12 in this one.
Saturday 14th October 2006: Man Utd v Portsmouth: Premiership: 4-1 loss
First Arsenal now Man Utd, not the best run of games we could have hoped for in all honesty.
Man Utd quite simply killed us here; we played so badly that even Garry Neville had to score out goal for us.
Paul Scholes gave Man Utd the lead in the 42nd minute before Neville’s OG right on the stroke of half time to give us an undeserved draw at half time. Alan Smith didn’t hang around in the second half as he rattled Man Utd back in the lead a minute after the restart.
Wayne Rooney made it three in the 59th minute before adding the fourth in the 63rd minute.
Linvoy Primus was also ordered off for us in the 23rd minute.
Sunday 22nd October 2006: Portsmouth v Bolton: Premiership: 1-0 win
An early contender for worst match of the season this one without almost nothing happening throughout the entire match except for Lomano LuaLua scoring the 50th minute, yeah it really was that dull.
Wednesday 25th October 2006: Portsmouth v Sheff Utd: Carling Cup third Round: 2-1 win
Couldn’t beat them in the Premiership but we managed to see them off in this Carling Cup encounter.
Danny Webber gave Sheff Utd the lead in the 13th minute before Benjani levelled things up on the half hour mark, Lomano LuaLua secured all three points with his 69th minute strike to take us through to the next round.
Saturday 28th October 2006: Everton v Portsmouth: Premiership: 1-0 loss
Another dull and dire match that only had one moment of note; this time around it was Tim Cahill’s 91st minute winner.
Rubbish :thdn:
Sunday 5th November 2006: Portsmouth v Fulham: Premiership: 1-0 win
Another hard fought 3 points here as both sides battled away.
Both sides had good chances in the first half to break the deadlock but neither could take advantage.
The second half was more of the same before Gary O’Neil struck with six minutes remaining with what proved to be the goal that wrapped up all three points for us.
Wednesday 8th November 2006: Chelsea v Portsmouth: Carling Cup fourth Round: 3-1 loss
A hard task this one as we come up against defending champions in this Carling Cup encounter and tragically they killed us /o\
Luke Moore opened the scoring in the 21st minute for Chelsea, Benjani pulled us level on the half hour mark before a quick fire Joe Cole double (43mins and 45mins) all but wrapped up the game for Chelsea.
Former Inter diddy Adriano missed a penalty in the 82nd minute.
