it used to work fine. now, when i am using a light sample, and then move to a dark colored part of the image, and try to select a sample from there, i can't select a dark sample. when i try, i get the previous light sample. ???? whassup? thanks, boyd.

From your description, my first guess is that you have unchecked Aligned in the Options Bar. Could that be it? \:]

i don't think i explained the problem adequately. let's say i'm working on a face. first i clone a nice part of the skin, and clear up blemishes. then, i want to go to the dark hair, to remove some gray spots. when i use alt-click to clone a bit of dark hair, i get a skin-colored spot at the point i want to use as a clone source spot. by fooling with the layer palette sometimes i am ok; other times i have to shut down p/s and begin again. real time waster. i hope this explains the problem better. thanks, boyd.

When you are Alt-clicking to establish the new target does the cursor change properly to the little target cursor?

while i have the left click button down, i have the target. i disappears when i let it go. i think that is normal. did you understand my description? another way to put it is that, once i have selected a clone example i have to use that example everywhere on the image. if i try to set another one i get the first example where i try to set the second one.

How about instead of using the left-click, you hold down the Alt Key on your keyboard and then click on your new target? I may not have the exact term right but the idea is, I think. I thought in Windows terminology it was click and right click.

i hold down the alt key, then click to set the clone point. it works perfectly until i want a NEW clone point. then, instead of making a new point, i get a copy of the OLD point at the spot where i try to set a new one.

Well shoot, I was hoping for something simple. I've never heard of that particular problem before and would probably start by trashing preferences, though I can't imagine quite what that would have to do with the issue. After that it's up to Window's folks to help, I'm afraid. I don't know, what's the next step in Windows when an application is acting up. Reinstall?

Sorry I can't really help but someone will be along who knows more and will have a better suggestion.

I have two more suggestions which may help eliminate some possibilities. First, if you hold down the Alt Key and start clicking on the lasso tools (or any of the tools with others hidden under them) in the tool box, do the tools cycle to the front properly? If so it isn't likely a problem with the Alt key itself.

Second, you might try resetting the tool. See the attached image.
