Background
Gretna has become very popular amongst football managers around the globe after having accomplished the dream of every lower league manager. Now, chairmans from Scotland's Third Division are actively looking for such lower league managers who aren't afraid to get down & dirty and are up for a challenge. One of those managers could be you. The only catch is the charimans aren't willing to spend the money Gretna has spent, so you've got to make up the gap with witts and managerial skills.
The Aim
To take a club from Scotland's Third Division to SPL... and while you're there why not win it along with the CL
The Rules
Load a game with the Scottish leagues only, with the Third Division selected, a medium database and attribute masking enabled. No additional players from any nation should be loaded.
Add yourself as a manager to the Third Division club of your choice, 'past experience' must be set to 'automatic'.
You may not move clubs unless you are sacked.
If you get sacked, you can either apply for any open jobs (but only for teams from the Third Division) or start over the whole thing (doesn't sound that good, i know )
There are no restictions on assigning feeder/parent clubs, and you may sign any players/staff you like.
The recommanded database is the one of the oficial 7.02 update without any editing (or the original one in case you don't have the 7.02 update).
No external utilities such as FMScout should be used.
Screenshots for anything are encouraged. You can also play this challenge as an online game, with 2 or more managers starting in the Third Division, just to increase the fun
The winner will be the player that manages to win the CL with his Third Division club within the lowest number of seasons. (some nice stories may appear out of this)
Have fun & good luck
I started playing this online with a friend of mine... i chose Montrose, while he went for Albion Rovers (we both chose our clubs for their names 'cause we didnt knew anything about anyone in the league anyway ). The media and our fans don't expect much of either of us, but who knows? Maybe one of us will take advantage of the slight chance he has and beat the odds
I've unknowingly been playing this challenge for a while already. I decided to try a Scottish team with andyafc's much renowned 5-2-3 tactic just to see how it would work out.
Have played two seasons so far, amazingly managing to get Elgin City promoted twice!! We are currently sitting top of Division 1 after 8 games, completely against the odds from the bookies, who predicted us as 200-1 relegation certainties!!
It's been a remarkable ride so far, made even more incredible by the fact that I have so far spend a massive £1000 in total on transfers over three years.
Am not having much joy in any of the cups though. Pretty much every match goes to extra time and the inevitable shoot-out and I have been beaten on spot kicks on all but one occasion. [I then proceded to go to a penalty shoot-out in the next round and got spanked 4-1.]
Unbelieveably, I am feeling supremely confident that the might Elgin will be challenging for the SPL title next season, too. Hopefully, we can make a name for ourselves there and maybe even go on to win the Champions League one day...
I'd challenge anyone to try and win it quicker (game-time) than me!!
Watch this space. Maybe my next update will be to introduce the new champions of Europe!
