Facetas Deportivos (31/07/2011) Uruguay stun South America in La Paz Penalty drama
Uruguay have stunned world football after snatching an unlikely Copa America win. Uruguay started the tournament as rank outsiders but managed to pull of an incredible turn of results just at the right time. "We defied the odds" said team manager Manny Calavera after his team ousted favourites Colombia in a gripping penalty shoot-out win in La Paz. Uruguay had reached the final by the skin of their teeth on numerous occasions. After sneaking into the quarter-final as a best third-placed runners-up in their group, Uruguay stunned favourites Brazil by snatching a precious 1-0 win. Although many critics suggested that lighting can't strike twice and lady luck can't bless Uruguay more than once - they were proved wrong. A scintillating penalty shoot-out against Argentina sent Uruguay into the final and with it the hopes of a nation. Sitting in the post match press-conference Calavera remained stunned. "It was a strange couple of weeks, we had lots of injuries, players out of form, defensive issues and problems back home in Korea." The problems in Korea, are of course Calavera's domestic duties managing K-League leaders Suwon, to whom he is still contracted. With his star striker wanting out, several players refusing contracts and currently negotiating the transfer of Carlos Edwards out of the club, Calavera saw the Copa America as reprieve for his domestic woes and problems.
Although the press-conference had an air of shock about it, it was to be another revelation that left everyone stunned. After the sacking of Hugo Sanchez as Mexico coach after the tournament, Calavera admitted that he was approached by representatives of the Mexican FA as a replacement for Sanchez, just hours after his team had lifted the trophy. “As of 2011, I shall be the coach of the Mexican National team, with the sole aim of restoring national pride to my homeland and hoping to win the Gold Cup and secure qualification to the 2014 World Cup in Spain.”
With this Calavera thanked the fans and nation of Uruguay for taking him on, and set out of La Paz airport towards Mexico to stay with his family for a few weeks before the resumption of the K-League season in a month’s time. http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/5...americavg9.jpg |

Chosun Ilbo (07/11/2011) Suwon Clinch K-League
Suwon Samsung Bluewings grabbed their first league championship since after winning both the opening and closing stages of the K-League on Saturday. Needing Pohang to slip up away to Gwangju as well as win against Busan, the Bluewings grabbed a crucial 2-0 win to avoid the deadly end of season playoffs after grabbing the final closing stage championship. Manny Calavera's men have been in impressive form throughout the season, notching 64 goals in the process. The deadly duo of Dzenan Radoncic and Juan Manuel Oliveira lead the way by each grabbing 20 goals+. Despite struggling last season under Calavera's stewardship, the first full season under the Mexican proved fruitful for the Suwon faithful, putting paid to the board’s confidence in him after many fans questioned his initial appointment. With the club also changing hands to a new owner and being floated on the stock-exchange as well a brand new youth academy being built on the outskirts of Uiwang, the future is certainly looking bright for Calavera and Suwon.
Calavera has signalled his future intentions for the club by signing a one year extension and promising to bring back the Asian Champions League and East Asian Championship to Suwon. http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/7...echampskv6.jpg |

Rep Power: 0 | Nov. 2008 midseason table End of season
After a rocky start of the season, the second half was quite an improvement, which is what I was hoping for with all the new players finally gelling into a team. In fact, the 17-2-2 record for the second half of the season is leaving me quite hopeful for next season.
I'm finding the Russian league rather hard to promote from though. Not just the absence of playoffs, with just the top two teams promoting, but there always seem to be two teams running away with the league as well. But I'm getting closer with every attempt.
The Republic of Congo job is going pretty much as expected. Not breaking any eggs in the World Cup Qualifying group, but it's a welcome distraction from the Russian adventure.
Summary:
Date: Nov. 6th, 2008
Job history:
- Salyut Belgorod (Russia): Dec.'05 - present
- Republic of Congo: Jan.'08 - present

Since completing my own challenge I thought I'd test out my new laptop and give this challenge a go.
I went for:
South Africa
Singapore
South Korea
Mexico
Denmark
England
Ireland
Australia
Brazil
All with the second tier loaded where possible.
After turning down several jobs in South Africa's Golden League I've also gone to Singapore to start my career at Woodlands.
Things haven't started too well though |

I seem to have qualified for the Asian Champions League, rather than the AFC Cup, what did I need to do to qualify for this?
Also, what league do I need to play in to qualify for the AFC President's Cup, or is that not included?

| Whether you get into the AFC Cup or Asian Champions League depends on how your league performs. There's no way in the game to see which your qualify though, as far as I know.
The AFC President's Cup isn't included, it's only for clubs in leagues like Pakistan, Taiwan, Cambodia etc that aren't in the game.

| Couldn't you qualify by playing in India?

Last season and this season IRL Indian sides play in the AFC Cup, so probably not. There's a ranking system drawn up by the AFC that decides which country gets into which tournament, as part of the Vision Asia programme they have.
There used to be a good article about it, which unfortunately I can't seem to find. Wiki says: Quote: |
The other competitions branched off this in 2004 when the 'Vision Asia' blueprint for development was launched. This led to the top fourteen AFC nations, the 'mature nations', sending their best teams to the AFC Champions League. The next 14 nations, the 'developing nations' qualify to send their teams to the AFC Cup.
| The rest of the nations outside these 28 qualify for the President's Cup I think. It's rather confusing.

Is anyone still doing this challange?
im currently manageing seoul, about 2 years in. K-league champions two years running, but no luck in continental competition... hoping to change that this year as ive just qualified from my champions league group.
only problem i can forsee is Al-Ittihad... they have a premiership quality side, dont think anyone will be able to beat them at there best.
overall i just want to win the CL & the East asian championship so i can leave! the K-league isnt bad, its pretty competitive, but i find there just isnt enough good koreans around to realy dominate at continental level... every club (including mine) seems to rely so much on their 3 forigners.
Current team:
GK: Kim Byung-Ji
DR: Shim Jae-Won
DL: Lee Eul-Yong
DC: Cho Byung-Kook
DC: Park Dong-Hyuk
MR: Seol Ki-Hyung (been injured, but will hopefully turn out good. 2.4million)
ML: Alvaro Dominguez
MC: Luis Hernandez
MC: Jang Sang-Won
FC: Dzenan Radoncic (6'4. scores for fun)
FC: Ko Ki-Koo
one very odd thing happend though, in last years all star game, neither side picked a goal keeper, instead they played an out field player there and just kept swapping them around. it was like playing with a rush keeper at school, was mental! only ended 4-3 because no-one could shoot on target
