Mighty NK Metalac - Croatian Second Division - End of Season Report 07/08

You can view my mid-season report here.
When I left you, I had just discovered that there was a winter break for the senior team of 100 days. It's a good thing because my soon-to-be-a-star midfielder had just injured himself for 3 months, 2 minutes after scoring a nice goal.

Also, if you remember, my team was pretty bad at the start of the season but that improved nicely during the season.

After the break, during which we played 2 friendlies against Division 1 teams (won 2-1 against Pula but lost 1-3 against my parent team Osijek), we went on a spectacular run, with 3 losses, 6 draws and 9 wins over the remaining 18 games.

We played so well that we managed to secure the 4th spot in the league. Pretty proud of my guys... You can view our spectacular progression on the graph.

Our best player was Ivan Sambolec. Playing mostly at DM, but able to cover for DL too, he secured 15(!) selections on the team of the week. Unsurprisingly, he was named on the Team of the season and was runner-up for player of the season.

The Fans Player of the year was Hrvoje Dukic, our left winger of choice. 14 goals, 8 assists and a 7.06 rating were pretty nice. I can see more coming from him over the course of next season.

Our top goal scorer was our first string striker Zlatko Majer, tied with Dukic at 14 goals. Pretty good production overall, but missed some super easy chances on a regular basis. I might want to look for someone else eventually. He probably won't be able to make the step up to Division 1.

In the midfield, standing like a rock and passing the ball left and right is Marko Barisic. A constant threat, whether on the reception of a header or with a treacherous pass that splits the defense.

Here is the rest of the squad. Notables are Ivan Cerkez, who starts on a regular basis in the national U19 team, even getting a goal. Just for fun, here are the tactics I am playing.

On the financial side, I absolutely don't know what's happening. And you won't hear me complain. Have a look, if you dare. Keep in mind that I play in US$ (out of habit more than anything), but divide roughly by 2 to get the £ value... Still...

Here is the season summary. You can view my Europe watch here. I'm too lazy to type it again... As expected, Dinamo and Hajduk will be hard to pass, but not impossible. As a proof, Rijeka won the league this year and are through to the Champions League.

Looking forward to next season
On the first year, the bookies gave us a 200-1 odds of winning the league. This year, we're at 16-1 and were actually mentioned in the season favorites. I expect morale to be high throughout the season and aiming for promotion. I'd like to have a nice cup run, I'm pretty sure we can manage it with 1-2 youngsters I have signed during the offseason.

First team in the league gets a straight promotion and second team plays a game against the second-to-last team in the first division to see who gets the right to play in the first division. Pretty neat system. I think it's the same thing in Switzerland, so you might watch out, mag man.

I'll also do another tour of Albania to see how my team has progressed during the season. Having played 3 out of 4 games, I must say that my team progressed a lot... But, that's for the next update...!

Jimbo: Congrats on the promotion. I know you didn't work too hard for it, but I hope you stick around and face a much harder challenge in your next division... Nice 9-0 win, though...

mag man: tough luck with the relegation of Serrières. with 5000-1, you at least lived to the odds... Good luck with Zug 94. That's a name almost as cool as Metalac...

Kaiserwatman: One step closer to European competition. It appears that you might be the first one to reach it... Good luck!

JoseRR: Impressive target man  Good job with the promotion too.

Gundo: Good job scoring on the pen this afternoon... How is your Stavanger going? It's been a while since we've had a Burda-update...

Very brief update to my team of Birks (Birkerod in Denmark).

Got a couple of games in against mu under 18s in an attempt to get some game time before the season started and also so I could look at more than just 11 players for over 45 minutes each.

Several new players into the club (I will do some screenies once the transfer window is shut) throughout the team as the general level in the squad was very poor.

Opened up our league campaign against one of our fellow relegation battlers and promptly went a goal down in 8 minutes. Equalised shortly after through an own goal and then went on to dominate and win 4-1 (away). 2 Goals from one of my strikers who I had actually inherited with the other goal from one of the new players.
This was followed by another away game but in the Danish Cup and against non-league oppostion. This was won comfortably and puts us into the second round against premiership opposition.

Hopefully we can continue this good start as there is only one automatic promotion place and second place goes into a playoff. More updates as I progress, which I expect to be slowly given recent experience.

Cheers.

Burda Update: Yeah there hasn't really been much to say about him at the minute due to us being in the closed season in Norway. Only thing I can add at the moment is that he has held on to his attributes well despite being on holiday, so that's good news at least. I am wanting a big season from him this year and with the season only being 26 league games long I don't have to worry about over playing him.

I'm currently scouring the Norwegian wilderness for potential new additions, it's a long and arduous task.

One of my new signing, a 18 year old AMR just got called for the U23 side to play in the Olympics. So I sent all my scouts over there...!

My scouts told me that he would be a good signing for any First division squad, so I'm pretty happy to have him, especially that my 35 year old was experiencing some difficulties at the end of last season....

Konquest Good season btw.

Things seem to be coming together for you nicely for you at the mighty NK Matalec.

I'm think you should be able to get promotion this season, especially if you've added one or two good youngsters aswell.

Maesteg Park - Season 07/08

I'm extremely pleased with how we played this season. I really expected us to get relegated.

This is how the final league table looked:

League Table

Here's my largeneedscuttingdown team:

Squad - As you can see, most players never played, simply because I never needed them. They will hopefully be offloaded.

A special mention goes to:

Peter Ferris - Welsh Young Player of the year and my top scorer.

Chris O'Sullivan - Was a very good signing and had the highest average rating in the team(not very high tbf.)

Wes Daly - Was very solid while he played at DM, and I then pushed him up to MC where he got a long-term injury towards the end of the season and never really recovered fully.

Ben Heath - tbf, without this kid at the back, our defence would have MUCH worse.

I am in some sort of a financial crisis at the moment and will try my hardest to get out of it. All my staff's contracts are up at the end of the season and I can't get them to sign new ones, so i will need to find new staff. I am also looking to bring in some quality players. All in all a very good season, and I hope to better it next year.
