Nov. 11th 2008

Spain U21 – Holland U21 (Friendly)

Line-up

Van Dahash, Bao, Van Der Libertine and Van Der Cook start the match, of Satas is not in the match selection.

Personal prediction: This one has draw written all over it.

Play-by-play:

3’ – 1-0! Spain scores. Rebound tap-in after a long shot was saved
6’ – deflected free kick from VDCook saved

Half time stats

Few more half-chances for Spain, then the match turned quite boring.

57’ – Van Der Cook from edge of area, wide
62’ – Van Der Cook substituted
63’ – 1-1! Elia finishes a nice Holland attack, the first one in the match. VDLibertine gets the assist with a one-time pass
63’ – Bao substituted
Full time: 1 – 1

Player stats

Boring first half, boring second half, boring match. Spain was the slightly better team, but no team deserved to win this match after such a lacklustre display.
Van Der Libertine gets the MoM award for a nice assist.

Nov. 12th 2008

Luxembourg – Poland (Friendly)

Line-up

The six same players start the match. Jordan has been listed as key player for Luxembourg for a while now. Poland is listed as 1-4 favorites.

Personal prediction: Luxebmourg has been doing very well, but at only half strength, I think Poland may be just a touch too stroung. Narrow loss, I think.

Play-by-play:

11’ – Luxembourg manages to put pressure in the opening minutes, resulting in two decent chances, the second after a nice pass through the center by McLachlan. Both saved, however.
14’ – 1-0! Freeliovic sent clear on the counter, and he tucks it in the far corner. Good start by Luxembourg.
19’ – Freelio from distance, well wide
23’ – Freelio dribbles his defender and goes into the area, but shot saved
24’ – free kick Harper, good save needed
32’ – great short pass Freeliovic, but Feller shoots wide
45’ – free kick Poland, Jordan saves easily

Half time stats

Very fine first half by Luxembourg, unfortunately only rewarded with one goal. Poland looked to be finding their rhythm a bit towards the end of the half, so another good 45 minutes will probably be needed.

75’ – Ruggiero from distance, over. Boring second half so far, but Luxembourg is doing well to prevent Poland from getting into the match.
76’ – corner kick, good header van Nistelrooy, saved well
78’ – free kick Harper, over
82’ – Freeliovic substituted
Full time: 1 – 0

Match stats
Player stats

Another good win for Luxembourg. Again not terribly high quality football, but it was effective. I expected Poland to be a bit stronger, but Luxembourg did well in preventing them from getting any sort of momentum going.
Also worth mentioning: again the Luxembourg manager kept the 4-4-2 formation all the way through, while I certainly expected him to go to his dreadful christmas tree formation, at least at the end. But he must be learning from previous mistakes.
Brad Harper gets the MoM award.

Yet another international goal for Freeliovic

I wonder how many I need to overtake Luxembourg's all time goal scorer??

Nov. 12th 2008

Spain – Holland (Friendly)
4 – 1

In Der Van Dude again played the full 90 minutes for Holland.
Player stats

Argentina – Belgium (Friendly)

Line-up

Chaocmans, Ninja and Maldini get to start the match again. Argentina is 4-7 favorites to win this match.

Personal prediction: I tend to agree with those odds. Belgium will likely struggle. Though if they keep it tight at the back, a draw could be possible.

Play-by-play:

13’ – Kompany fouls some dude, penalty kick! Early Argentinian pressure pays off.
14’ – 1-0! Sorin converts the penalty
26’ – 2-0! Lucho Gonzalez off a killer cross from the left
42’ – Maldini from distance, wide

Half time stats

Argentina firmly in control. Belgium managed a few half-chances, but don’t seem to have enough in them to hope for a comeback.

46’ – Chaocmans and Maldini substituted
70’ – Ninja substituted
81’ – 2-1! Van Buyten heads it in off an indirect free kick
86’ – 3-1! Aimar from 30 yards
Full time: 3 – 1

Player stats

Absolutely nothing happened in the second half until the Belgian goal out of nowhere, and then Argentina woke up again. Fair result, Belgium couldn’t claim a draw with all the good will in the world.
Again the three young Belgians didn’t manage to make much of an impact, but their time will come. These weren’t the easiest pair of matches to debut in.

Wow, Don James scores in the Olympics and suddenyl thinks hes a striker, a goal for Arsenal, a couple of Euro goals for Villa (and the highest fee yet ), another goal (of unspecified origin) for Villa and then an under 19 goal as well.

KUTVGW

Some lad named Nicolas Braun (who's now a scout) is the current Luxembourg topscorer with 9 goals.

Freeliovic currently has 7 goals. (Though I'm not certain if goals in friendlies count towards the topscorer total. I think they do... but we'll know soon enough, I guess. )

Most capped player is Jeff Strasser, with 83 caps. Strasser is a 34 year old DC/DM who still got called up last season, but hasn't been part of the squad anymore lately. Still, it'll be a bit longer before anyone surpasses him.
Daniele Ruggiero is currently the most-capped young Luxembourgian with 15 caps.
