Nov. 9th 2007

Before Luxembourg’s friendly match against Canada (for which ten players are called up), one more quick update, with the World Ranking update:

Holland: 7th
Belgium: 30th
Luxembourg: 127th

So the draw against Bulgaria sees Luxembourg move up another 28 spots. Up to the top 100!

And a screenie of the Luxembourg information screen. Not just to show the rankings, but a few interesting names in the “star players” column too.

Nov. 10th 2007

Luxembourg – Canada (Friendly)

Line-up

Nine of the ten players start the match, with only Brad Harper on the bench. Canada is listed as favorite, but only as “evens,” and Bloodhound is listed as key player for Luxembourg.

Personal prediction: This is the one. Nine of the superluxlads in the starting line-up is, if I’m not mistaken, a record. It’s also the first time Freelio AND van der Anders start the match together, surely that’ll result in some goals. And, let’s be honest here, this is Canada… puhlease. Multi-goal win for Luxembourg, I say.

Play-by-play:

2’ – long range shot Freeliovic, wide. Good pass by Vizzy though
9’ – shot Wallace, but too weak, saved
15’ – Wallace blasts over from distance
19’ – Vizzy sends Freelio in the clear with a great pass, goalie wins the one-on-one
24’ – 0-1! Counter attack Canada, Radzinski scores
25’ – right after the goal, Harper comes on for Freeliovic, for some odd reason. Formation stays 4-4-2 though, just some players shifting around
29’ – 0-2! De Guzman from a free kick
44’ – another fast counter by Canada, Jordan saves well
45’ – 1-2! Van der Anders scores on a great deep pass by Ruggiero

Half time stats

Bit unlucky. Luxembourg started well, but the two quick Canada goals took the wind out of their sails. The goal right before the break gives hope for the second half though. Hopefully they can turn things around before the manager makes the obligatory six substitutions because it’s a friendly.

62’ – Luxembourg put some pressure with a few crosses that got cleared, first actual shot comes from a free kick, vd Anders wide
72’ – Bloodhound and van der Anders substituted
72’ – Vizzy yellow card for pushing some Canadian away
85’ – yellow card Wallace
86’ – Jordan saves easy shot from distance
Full time: 1 – 2

Match stats
Player stats

Bit disappointing. Luxembourg was boss in the second half, but didn’t manage to create enough chances. Several crosses into the box, but none of them came to anything. Still an undeserved loss though, a draw would have been more than fair, and even a win wouldn’t have been all that unjust.
On the bright side, a goal by van der Anders and Teejay Vizzy’s senior debut.

Parma, you mean?
But, no, fraid I only have the top leagues running of every nation except Belgium and Holland. And England, where I included the Championship at the last moment, on a whim. Which, in hindsight, perhaps I shouldn't have done, but oh well.
I did consider running the Serie B and the Spanish second division as well, but decided against it. My computer's a few years old, it's already moving quite slow with the leagues I have running now.

Nov. 17th 2007

Poland – Belgium (Euro Qual)
2 – 0
Belgium fail to qualify for Euro 2008

Holland – Luxembourg (Euro Qual)

Line-ups

Again nine of the ten Luxembourg players in the starting line-up, but this time it’s Freeliovic on the bench.
Bloodhound still listed as key player. Holland, not surprisingly, is listed as clear favorites, 1-33 odds.

Personal prediction: Too soon to expect something from this match for Luxembourg. If Holland has an off day, they may get a draw, but I doubt it.

Play-by-play:

1’ – 30yrd shot vd Anders, nowhere near target
18’ – two great saves Jordan, first on free kick, then on rebound
22’ – van der Anders picks up a knock
28’ – Jordan saves close range shot
44’ – free kick vd Anders, wide

half time stats

Well, as long as it’s 0-0, there’s hope I guess.

46’ – Luxembourg goes to the christmas tree formation, but only Wallace gets substituted this time.
56’ – Lux get out from the Holland pressure a moment, decent string of passes ends with a shot by Joachim, Holland goalie saves well
60’ – free kick Holland, great save
69’ – Dutch header cleared off the line
71’ – shot from angle, Jordan saves well
71’ – Vizzy and Bloodhound substituted
77’ – Kuyt hits the bar
86’ – Ruggiero comes off injured, no subs left
88’ – 1-0! Van der Vaart on the rebound after a great save by Jordan
91’ – great 25yrd shot by Birdstadt, saved well
Full time: 1 – 0

Match stats
Player stats

For a while I thought Luxembourg would pull off the 0-0. It would have been harsh on Holland though, obviously. On the other hand, some great defending and goalkeeping counts for something too.
Also worth noting: Ruggiero and Bloodhound played their 10th senior international match.

Nov. 21st 2007

Matt Bennett at Fiorentina has been assigned a tutor: 31 year old MC Fabio Liverani.

And Rip van Winkle finally made his debut for Wigan, playing the full 90 minutes in the Championship match against Birmingham.

Azerbaijan – Belgium (Euro Qual)
0 – 2

Belarus – Holland (Euro Qual)
0 – 1

Euro Qualifying matches are over.
There are no more international matches scheduled of any kind at the moment. Belgium has another Euro U19 Qual week late May, but those haven’t been scheduled yet. Hopefully a few friendlies get arranged before that.

Great updates as always Coach
I'm hoping that Van Der Cook is getting some well deserved action at Bayern. He needs assigning a tutor to help him fulfil his potential! Are there any other Dutch people at FC Bayern? I thought Roy Makaay was there, but perhaps he's moved on!
